Third episode of Nyaruko-san.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Considering the previous episodes, this will be completely subverted later on.

Either that or all of his antics will be played for laughs.

Probably both, since I think I now know who he is.

JUST WHERE IN THE NAME OF THE DAEMON SULTAN DID SHE PULL THAT CHAINSAW OUT OF?

ZA WARUDO! MUDAMUDAMUDAMUDAMUDAMUDAMUDA!

The end of the episode was probably the biggest ohfuck so far.

Katawa Shojou runs fine until that one part in the VERY beginning where you pass out and the screen turns to black, then it crashes. Looks like someone else has the same problem on their forum, it's strange since they use Windows and I use Linux though.

Blah, hopefully it gets fixed!

What OS are you running on?
Are you running it in Admin mode?
Check the graphics settings?

The more I read To Aru Majtusu no Index the more impressed I am -- the setting is pretty damned interesting. It starts out as a seemingly super generic shounen-ey series, but as it progresses characters are introduced who are downright callous, and killing is increasingly common. It definitely starts out feeling like a shounen series made for a seinen audience, but somewhere along the way it's transitioned into full-on seinen.

The series' protagonist, Kamijou Touma, hasn't even been mentioned yet in the book I'm on -- and I'm nearly 100 pages in. The focus on side characters is really fascinating, and they're a good deal more interesting than Kamijou. Kamijou reminds me a lot of Shirou -- he wants to save everyone, he won't kill, he does anything to protect his friends, but I suppose that's basically the archetypal shounen hero. What made Fate/Stay Night interesting was that Shriou was this typical hero, but the world was incredibly grim -- not everyone could be saved, and sacrifices were necessary. Index has a similar feel, but Kamijou hasn't had to compromise on his ideals yet. He's also amazingly weak as a protagonist, often surviving through sheer luck or coincidence, and regularly has his ass saved by people much more powerful than he is.

Still, the juxtaposition between Kamijou's "I'll save everyone!" and the other characters' unrepentant murdering is refreshing. The series definitely takes a while to really get going, but it's probably one of my favorite 'battle' series. That said, the battling isn't particularly frequent; while it's often the means to revolve the plots, the story (at least in the later novels) is focused much more around political intrigue, with secret government organizations backstabbing each other, performing assassinations, and trying to start wars. Most of the characters are just pawns, and we while some grand overarching gameplan is beginning to come together, it's revealed at a very deliberate pace.

I usually dislike characters like Kamijou, but for some inexplicable reason, I'm finding that I actually really like him. Tsuchimikado and Accelerator are both more interesting, but Kamijou is a great protagonist.

Rewatching the anime made me realize holy crap anime have a lot of exposition, especially when adapted from wordy light novel source material. They spend 6 episodes on the first book alone. The entire first season, all 24 episodes, adapts the first 6 novels. The second season, also 24 episodes, adapts the next 8. There's another 8 left in the main novel series, and then 4 more in the sequel novel series (which is still ongoing). Altogether, there is a hell of a lot of To Aru Majtusu no Index to read, and the fan translators are nothing if not prolific, usually translating new releases in well under a month. I actually really want to hurry up and get caught up on Index so I can get back to Nasu stuff, but there's so damn much.

But yeah. Enough about Index. Hyouka, KyoAni's new series, is mouthwateringly beautiful. The art is amazing -- film-quality, really. The story doesn't seem bad, either -- they're pretty good at doing slice of life stuff. I wasn't a fan of K-On, but Hyouka has definitely caught my eye.

Whaaat, how could you.

Any recommendations for anime with a more "normal" cast of characters without falling completely into the romance category? I'm sorta burnt out on superpowered teenagers and stuff.

A college setting is a bonus, since I haven't seen that explored as much as it could be - Genshiken, Nodame Cantabile, and Tatami Galaxy being the only ones coming to the top of my head.

Also taking this time to promote Tatami Galaxy again, because it is so lonely in this thread.

It's also on Youtube!

I'm glad to hear this.  I started the first volume for real now.

EDIT:
Oh and because I've been completely forgetting to mention it I've been playing Sengoku Rance besides Remember11.  I'm on turn 82 and it's really awesome.  Seriously Alicesoft you need to make non-ero games you'd make so much money.  I've already played as much Daiteikoku as I could before the 35% translation started not covering as much as I wanted.

Yes. I haven't tried Daiteikoku yet, but I played a hell of a lot of Sengoku Rance about a year ago. A lot of the humour is derived from how outrageous all the H-scenes are, and generally how ridiculous Rance is as a character; it'd be worth playing for Rance alone, but the actual game mechanics were solid enough to draw me in.

Slice-of-life without significant romance elements is pretty rare, probably since romance is easy to build a plot (and hence, characters) off of. I didn't actually finish Honey and Clover (I can't remember why I stopped watching it), but it had a college setting. The wiki article seems to suggest it turns into a love-triangle romance series, though.

Bakuman... probably isn't what you're looking for. Welcome to the NHK, maybe? Man, I think there's a huge gap in my knowledge in regards to non-romance/harem, non-superpower/mecha anime. Natsume from Natsume Yuujinchou has a super power (he can see spirits!) but he doesn't use it to fight or anything, and a lot of the series is him just sort of dealing with it. I'm trying to think of series which don't inevitably end up with romance, and I'm drawing a serious blank.

Usagi Drop is the only other anime that comes to mind, but it doesn't have a college setting. Also I just checked the wikipedia article, since I only watched the first couple of episodes and holy crap spoilers I did not see that ending coming, and I guess rule out 'no/light romance'.

...it's probably pretty bad that the only series I have experience with that's even remotely similar to Genshiken is Hen Zemi, which is probably not something you want to watch. Yeah, I have no suggestions exceptmaybe Honey and Clover.

Well, I don't really mind romance if it's there, but I've watched too much where it's the main focus. Thanks for the suggestions.

I should point out I'm still reading Berserk before bed when I can.  Half way done with volume 29.

Have you tried out Aria: The animation? I watched that recently and thought it was an excellent non-romance slice of life show. And very unique as a "sci fi" series where there's no post-apocalypse or killer robots going on.

I fixed it, apparently if your screen is too small, it scales down the game, but  then when it gets to the fancy animated parts it chokes and dies. Luckily I know how to fake a larger screen resolution, which fixed it. (Took a while to figure it out though, just tried it on a hunch based on a line at the start of the logs saying it was scaling it down.)

As nice as that is...I find that using Berserk as a bedtime story............highly questionable.

I also recommend reading/watching ARIA for a taste of a different kind of "slice of life". As one of the voice actress of the anime said: "Nothing really happens, but in a really good way"

Your use of ellipses......is............legendary.

Yeah I'm on volume 30 now.
Spoiler: Berserk (click to show/hide)

ALSO

Riddle me this.

Why is this my Amazon recommendation list:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I've only read Haruhi and Railgun, I liked both but I never bought them on Amazon why is it telling me this?!  All 17 pages are the same.  Spice & Wolf...Negima...Usagi Drop...Toradora...

I also got High School of the Dead and Higurashi which are the only exceptions honestly.  I still don't like HSotD though.

Lucky Star I can get, what with it closely being tied to Haruhi.
