Actually, the manga seemed to hold together better than the anime after L was killed off.  Partly because the anime begun to do some pretty hefty abridging at that point.

And Light did degrade, but he was already losing his mind before then.  And I suppose several years of living as a god with the only team attempting to catch you being led by yourself is going to induce some complacency and arrogance.

It wasn't arrogance that i objected to, it was flat out braindead stupidity. Light's one major defining characteristic is that he is an absolute bona-fide genius. Quite possibly the smartest man on the planet. Light eats Xanatos Roulettes for breakfast. He's the kind of person who plans for a Thirty Xanetos Pileup and comes out smelling like roses.

The second season was not that man, like, at all. The writer was clearly aiming for having Light grow overconfident and arrogant in his power, and possibly a little insane, but he went way too far and ended up completely retarding him.


The worst part though is the complete asspull that is Near and Mello. I mean seriously, where the hell did they come from? I expected better out of such a high quality Manga\Anime. When L died, the story arc ended, and i expected it to be over, finished. The story was complete, let the viewer imagine what happened to the world with Light free and loose.

Instead, Near and Mello pop into existence out of nowhere, Light suffers massive and unexplained character degredation and the entire story takes a sudden derailing. Why? I guess because the writer wanted to have the good guys win, which is really sad, because if Light had won the story would be that much more unique and interesting.

Yeah... they did kinda come from nowhere.  Would've been better to at least have them introduced before somewhat.  On the other hand, Light winning out after killing L would dramatically change the entire message and feel of the story, which I guess the author wasn't prepared to do.

The implication in the manga that Near had already used the Death Note to control Mikami was interesting, though.

Near and Mello was really a 'what the fuck?', moment. I dont think there introduction was all that hard, though it was out of no where, but I found it believable that L had replacements in training for him. Although anything that directly alluded to their existence would have been nice.

The highest point in the story was L death. The way Light worked it just was fucking awesome. Light unraveling in the magna I found rather engaging, not nearly as awesome as when L died.

The story did change from the cat and mouse game when L was alive to seeing how being a murdering fuck head will ruin you as a person. L dies, and we have a progressively successive Light, who managed to kill the only person really capable of defeating him.

He been on this winner high for years now, this sense of infallibility must have grown huge! Since he felt like he could not be defeated he did not need to be as careful or as charismatic as he once was. It was clear he saw those around him as a Tool, but he starts to openly treat them as one in the second half the story.


If I were to rewrite the story, I would have introduced the twins first, and had L himself be introduced in the second half, kept the whole cat and mouse game up through out it.

I guess the part with L could be seen as "The Rise" while the part with Near and Mello could be "The Fall".  It becomes less "discover the others identity" and more "kill/ expose the other".

Although every time I think about the series I now can't help but imagine Zac Efron as Light Yagami.  Even if the rumour's fake it's still a horrible thought.

That said, having just finished Gurren Lagann (like...10 minutes ago), I'd like to know, worth watching? Both, neither, or just the second one? I'd hate to spoil the epicness of Gurren Lagann with a subpar movie followup. (I'm looking at you, Afro Samurai!)

Basically, i beleive alot of it was reanimated to movie quality, so the fight scenes in particular look more awesomer, but the movies are just a rehash of the show.

Most of the anime I watch isn't shown on network television. I finally found a place to see Planetes. I'll be watching it after I get done with ranma again. On season 4 tonight.

If you like to where you can watch some stuff I know a few sites that live stream them. The quality isn't that great, but they shouldn't respect copywrite zone things.

of course I know where to watch anime on the internet. I'm not a luddite.

It's just that there's something special about watching it on TV... knowing that so many others are seeing it at the same time as you. A feeling that internet torrents just don't capture.

that, and watching any show becomes a lot more socially acceptable if you can name a tv channel it airs of rather than a torrent site (there's just a strange social stigma attached to viewing things on the internet these days...)

Yeah, the movies are very good. The first one is inferior to the second on the basis of it cheaply rehashing the first half of the series, with no improvement in the quality at all until the very end, where it then unexpectedly skyrockets in quality.

The second movie is unbelievably more awesome, because it takes the continuity and changes it completely to fit the movie better, and adds tons of cool scenes. In fact, if I had to say, there's only two things I don't like about it:

1. Kittan's voice is... different. I can't put my finger on it, but it's definitely not the same voice actor.

2. They change the plot quite a bit, and they patched it up quite impressively so it still made sense, however, there's a little bit near the end that is just a plot hole, plain and simple. However, chances are you won't catch it due to being caught in the moment, but it's still there.
