I guess they changed the ending in the anime because... I dunno... Light's death was too traumatic in the original?  I mean, I suppose lying around pathetically in a pool of his own blood calling out to people he himself had killed to help might've been too much for the adaptation, even if in the original his pathetic downfall was part of Near's plan.

Although the fact it ended with random speculation means that I'll know be thinking about it for weeks D:

Personally i'm of the opinion that the story ended when Light killed L and no Near\Meloo asspull and Light's subsequent massive character degredation ever occured.

I havent watched much of the anime as it really melodrama, and seems to draw to much attension away from the cat and mouse game in the magna.

I really enjoyed the ending of the magna, it seem perfectly fitting as it reflected his inner turmoil.

The story did suffer a lot when L died. I almost stopped reading it. Light was going off the deep end through out the first part of the story, what was keeping him from falling completely apart was his success when he started to loose, he couldn't accept it and fought with anything he had. Which at the end was just memories and delusions.

Actually, the manga seemed to hold together better than the anime after L was killed off.  Partly because the anime begun to do some pretty hefty abridging at that point.

And Light did degrade, but he was already losing his mind before then.  And I suppose several years of living as a god with the only team attempting to catch you being led by yourself is going to induce some complacency and arrogance.

L didn't trust light, so he made a fake death note and then wrote his own name in the real one, insuring that he would not die until the 23 days had passed. Light tried to use the fake, proving himself o be Kira. With Misa's death note destroyed and Light's captured and marked for burning, Ryuk decided the fun was over and killed Light.

It wasn't arrogance that i objected to, it was flat out braindead stupidity. Light's one major defining characteristic is that he is an absolute bona-fide genius. Quite possibly the smartest man on the planet. Light eats Xanatos Roulettes for breakfast. He's the kind of person who plans for a Thirty Xanetos Pileup and comes out smelling like roses.

The second season was not that man, like, at all. The writer was clearly aiming for having Light grow overconfident and arrogant in his power, and possibly a little insane, but he went way too far and ended up completely retarding him.


The worst part though is the complete asspull that is Near and Mello. I mean seriously, where the hell did they come from? I expected better out of such a high quality Manga\Anime. When L died, the story arc ended, and i expected it to be over, finished. The story was complete, let the viewer imagine what happened to the world with Light free and loose.

Instead, Near and Mello pop into existence out of nowhere, Light suffers massive and unexplained character degredation and the entire story takes a sudden derailing. Why? I guess because the writer wanted to have the good guys win, which is really sad, because if Light had won the story would be that much more unique and interesting.

I just got handed a load of Rurouni Kenshin by a mate as he returned my gamer pad.

I've yet to lookat them but they seem really good, anyone else know of the series?

Yeah... they did kinda come from nowhere.  Would've been better to at least have them introduced before somewhat.  On the other hand, Light winning out after killing L would dramatically change the entire message and feel of the story, which I guess the author wasn't prepared to do.

The implication in the manga that Near had already used the Death Note to control Mikami was interesting, though.

Both the Anime and the Manga are quite good, although they do split off eventually.
