Not an engraving, but close enough - I just found a rather amusing image sewn into a narrow GCS silk left glove, dropped by an elite goblin during the most recent siege.

Quote
This is a superior quality narrow giant cave spider silk left glove. It is made from giant cave spider silk cloth. This object is adorned with hanging rings of exceptionally worked giant mole bone.

On the item is an exceptionally designed image of Kivish Slingsaved the Rounded Dimple of Daggers the dwarf and lizards in troglodyte leather. Kivish Slingsaved the Rounded Dimple of Daggers is surrounded by the lizards. Kivish Slingsaved the Rounded Dimple of Daggers looks terrified.

I recognized the name as one of my own Champions, so I viewed her profile:

Quote
Kivish Bimekast Lavathstorlut Urist, "Kivish Slingsaved the Rounded Dimple of Daggers", Champion

...
Kivish Bimekast Lavathstorlut Urist likes Sandy clay loam, Tin, Tsavorite, Highwood, pearl and cave spider silk. When possible, she prefers to consume Prickle berry wine. She absolutely detests lizards.

Not satisfied with trying to kill my dwarves, the goblins are trying to humiliate them as well!

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

The slaughter of Mechanisms
"Engraved on the floor is a masterfully designed image of Likot Shiphelps the dwarf by črith Zoluthasob. Likot Shiphelps is burning. The artwork relates to the heat-induced death of the dwarf Likot Shiphelpsin Claspedblizzards in the early autumn of 205."

The rest of the engravings relate to the founding of the fort, my mayor ascending to the leadership, an artefact or the creation of one. No burning goblins/elves yet. Invasion's turned of until I'm ready to test my not-so elaborate death-trap.

Osed Lokum "The Bin of Spears"

Engraved on the floor is an exceptionally designed image of Nako Holethieves the Marshes of Ruin the goblin and Mafol Dabblingringsthe dwarf by erith Atiszokun. Mafol Dabblingrings is shooting Nako Holethieves the Marshes of Ruin. The artwork relates to the shooting of the goblin Nako Holethieves the Marshes of Ruin by the dwarf Mafol Dabblingrings in Witchsold in the Fleshy Tower in 64 during Zokun Orshet, "The Siege of Cremation".

I ran across this while looking for the masterwork engravings my engraver's been engraving. I liked the name of the goblin, the name of the place and the name of the siege. It sounds so much like the dwarves just got bored of the siege and poured magma on the goblins.

I once had an engraver obsessed with alligators and humans.  I turned history on and looked that the engravings again.  Turns out there was some named alligator that had terrorized a human town and my engraver was retelling the tales of this legendary alligator.

You need to make said elf leather into the most amazing work of art.  Embed it with every kind of gem you have, stud it with metals, and sew images into it.  Erect a shrine outside your fort with that in the center.  Let the elves know that you view their very skin as naught more but a medium for your dwarves to work on.

I once set my engraver to work in the dining room while I was trading with the elves. Once I was done, I noticed my engraver was done, and decided to admire his handiwork. I forget the precise details, but many of the engravings were of events from a war between the dwarves and the elves, and most of those were of dwarves killing elves.

I love this game's sense of humour.

So far my favorite is the one of the first expedition leader because it wound up directly behind the mayor's throne in his office, just because it's the perfectly reasonable spot to find it.
After that, we've got these ones, which I haven't seen before and are therefore fun.

Engraved on the wall is a finely-designed image of Flalakajayngis the kobold and Cog Ceilingmirror the dwarf by Sazir Imushatzul. Flalakajayngis is making a plaintive gesture. Cog Ceilingmirror is laughing. The artwork relates to the mortal wounding of the kobold Flalakajayngis by the dwarf Cog Ceilingmirror in Evermansion in the early summer of 303 during the Third Theft at Evermansion.
Never saw one celebrating an almost-kill before, though the wound did kill him, I suppose.

Doesn't say who did it; apparently it was an unknown creature.

Doesn't say who did it...

If you are at war with the Hippies, then possibly a Dwarven Caravan Guard shot him? If not at war with them, then an Invader likely got him.

Not too many other creatures use missile weapons.

its an amusing coincidence that he made an engraving of a rather loud event in your quiet place

It appears to have been in history, if I remember correctly, at least 50 years before my fort. There are actually 2 engravings of creatures being shot by unknown beings (as in "This artwork relates to the killing of Urist McDead by an unknown creature") and one of just an image, not even described, but it apparently relates to a human being devoured by an unknown creature!

I know that worldgen culls unremarkable creatures, so it must have culled a few elves from history.

Indeed. I might want to look into the history sometime, since it, again only says "On the wall is a finely-designed image by Sazir Imushatzul. The artwork relates, etc., etc." That and the engraving doesn't even appear as a U, like a human would; it's just a square.

ED: It must have been an elf, since she was apparently shot by the same unknown creature. But why it just showed as a square confuses me.

I had a pretty good set myself, forgot the names but

'The dwarf is speaking to the dwarves'
'The dwarves are laboring.'
'The dwarves are traveling' x4
'The image is of circles.'

All in a perfect line :P

"The Portents of Intricacy"

Engraved on the wall is a superiorly designed image of Fikod Cagehame the dwarf and lizards by Urdim Elisiden. Fikod Cagehame is surrounded by the lizards.

This one confused me so I looked Fikod Cagehame up in the unit list .. apparently he absolutely detests lizards.  ;D

^Nothing about him looking terrified? I got that one when my mayor had similar sentiments about purring maggots... "On the wall is an image of Tulon Chambermerged and purring maggots. Tulon Chambermerged is surrounded by the purring maggots. Tulon Chambermerged looks terrified."
