NPCs can hear you stealing if you have a low skill, but the chance of them hearing you through a wall is slightly lower than the chance of them seeing you.

And you better be pretty strong if you want to steal fruit trees. You need 82 strength. But you can steal snowy, dead trees if you have 28 strength. That's what I'm going to steal, since my house is all snowy.

What's it mean when an artifact's name is in {braces} instead of <triangle things>? I think it just means it's a better artifact, but I'm not completely sure.

steal scrolls and skill books in the shelter.
They have a weight of 0.0 and should be relatively easy.

Can you actually learn anything from skill books?

IIRC it raises your skill potential, allowing you to increase the skill faster through use.

Hmm, just came back to this game after a long break.  Playing a Juere Thief is pretty difficult, I keep dying a lot.  Any suggestions/recommendations?  ??? Right now I'm trying to improve my fishing and performing skills, both for money and for worshipping Ehekatl.  In particular I'm hoping for a semi-reliable way to earn Plat, since I taught him Firearms and it's going up pretty slowly.

To earn plat, do escort quests. If you have seven league boots, you can get a fairly reliable source of PP by doing every escort quest listed. Be sure to leave all unessential equipment at your house to decrease weight and reduce death drops.

A laser gun is arguably the best possible firearm to use. It does max damage reliably to almost its full range, and at full range it does 50%. No other ranged weapon except maybe shurikan come close.

Do not perform in the town closest to your cave. You will die from loyter. Keep as much equipment as you can stored so you don't lose it when you do die.

Ustxu Iceraped the Frigid Crystal of Slaughter was a glacier titan. It was the only one of its kind. A gigantic feathered carp composed of crystal glass. It has five mouths full of treacherous teeth, enormous clear wings, and ferocious blue eyes. Beware its icy breath! Ustxu was associated with oceans, glaciers, boats, and murder.

Thanks for the advice.  Yeah, I did get a wish and wished for seven-league boots.  Suddenly all those quests to Noyel don't seem QUITE as impossible. ::)  Of course, now I've passed initiation for the Thieve's Guild, so I'm an outlaw.  I used a disguise kit to pay my bills, but beyond that it's a long road...

BTW, I want to do the Bomber quest before I go increase my karma again, but I'll need to learn Weight Lifting first.  This could take a while... :P

To follow up that tip, don't just keep doing quests.

Being successful at quests make your reputation goes up. And as it goes up, the game balances it and your enemies get tougher and tougher. Your success will kill you.

So choose some quests to fail - choose those that do not reduce your karma - harvesting and party quests are among those.

There's a NPC in town that will give you a list of AI adventurers. Use that list to compare your character level and reputation with them. If you have a lot more reputation than adventurers that are higher level than you, it's time to disappoint some farmers or party hosts.

Party quests are the best. I like to go up to NPCs, and train my charisma skill, if you know what I mean. Also a neat way of gaining expensive items if your performer skill is high enough.

Wrong, skill books slowly train the skill itself. It takes a while to actually train the skill and only raises it a bit (like .050 of a level or something with decent potential) but it adds up, and on rainy days and during etherwind you can get something like half a level to a whole level.
When the weather is fine, you can only train once a day, but a little boost to your skill every day is still a good thing.

So, Here's the problem I'm having now...  My little girl's inventory is filled with cheap engagement amulets, and she can't pick anything up?  How am I supposed to fix this without trashing the relationship score thing?  I already made her eat one of them, but I'd rather not do that a bunch of times. :-\

Edit:  Heh, screw the laser gun, I just found the <Vanilla Rock>!  1d42 and Pierce 50%...  This should be fun! ;D

1d42 isn't something you should rely though... when you need it most it would deal 1 point of damage for 3 turns in a row... Elona is a roguelike, and the RNGod can be extremely cruel. :p

IMO panties, even non-artifact ones, would be better than Vanilla Rock. They make your targets go crazy.

Yeah, I went back to the laser pistol pretty quickly. :P  However I haven't found any panties yet.  My firearm skill is higher than my throwing anyway.  Still, I finally realized what I really need... Marksman skill.  The Tactics of ranged weapons...  and I don't have it. >_<  I don't even know where to train it.  I little help, please?  The wiki didn't help me here either. :-\
