It's obvious we have different ideas of what amount of repetition is considered a grind. I don't relish the idea of chopping 6300 trees just to get enough carpentry skill to make an end table.

I feel it is particularly difficult to do this solo, at least if you have a buddy the rigmarole is far less noticeable. Also, I don't use a repeat last action script. Anyway. I can't retrieve my password so Grimmworld is a non-event.
I worked up to 120 Carpentry without chopping a single tree. Like you, I didn't relish the idea of chopping trees. So I just bought the wood in one go.

Well, it was not a grindfest for me because I had scripts for pretty much everything.

Magic resist was one of the easiest things on most shards. Poison wall + paralyze wall + bandages :P.

But if you intend to do it all manually... Good luck eh...
Bingo.
I admit to having used scripts more often than not... BUT, I did 'legitimately' raise animal taming to 120 on a produ shard once- no scripting involved. And I have raised some crafting skills to 100-120 without scripting as well... But, I've also done all that over night with scripts:-)

Im having a real tough time figuring out how to install/run Ultima Online and a Private Shard.

What version should I install Ultima Online up to?

How do I connect to a private shard?

Which private shards are more like the older versions?

Oh man I used to play UO. I scripted for a freeserver too, let's see if I can remember the names ...

I played on Krynn's Demise, and scripted / GM'd for Elusive Shadows. I think my name was Blinkin'. Or Avogadro.

So it sounds like you guys wanted to enter an existing server that already had a lot of population. Are you noticing that people aren't speaking English? It seems like about 5 years ago we were seeing English-speakers ebbing and a lot more players and servers were in Brazil, Russia, etc.

The UO emulators are pretty finished game engines. There's a lot more to script, but it's nothing like making a new game. For example, it seems like a lot of people get a kick out of Space Station 13, and you could totally script that up in UO. Of course, things like water and atmosphere flows would be a lot more complicated and take up a lot of resources. And you'd need new art.

Any interest in running a server with DF sensibilities (lots of crafting and mineral-finding, etc)?

Urist

Have a look at UO Second Age

Or as John Hopoate said, Hybrid. If you download Razor for UO, you should be able to connect to Hybrid with Razor "out of the box".

I managed to get into Ultima Online Second Age. I'm making a woodsman to get to know the game, then I'm probably going to make a miner. One problem though, I can't figure out the controls. How does I mine for wood? (How do I chop trees  :( )

Urist - If it's still how I remember you need to put an axe (hatchet etc) in your hand then double click it from the paper doll. Should give you a targeting icon, then just click on a tree (must be humping the tree, no space or it won't work).

Is there a group of Bay 12ers actually active on a shard? I'd love to get back into UO but only if the community is alive and good.

Well the shard I'm on is active, 500 people on at any given time, maybe we should start up a Twelfth Bay town.

Second Age, I don't know if it's a good server or not, as I am still a huge noob. Decided to make a woodsman.

Oh, I didn't know that was the server name. See, the first expansion pack for UO was "The Second Age" and I figured you were playing a shard that used that client.

Yeah, there's a shard named the second age as well.

Heh

I play second age infrequently, I think I am still trolling about the Fighter Town spamming cut logs/make kindling/light campfires.

So if you see a snakey trail of campfires and a dude with a green shirt, that is probably me.

As I said, I don't play reliably however. It's just too boring.

I also thought this.

Unfortunately, he's right.

Now if they implemented everything good about Haven and Hearth (crops, village-building, terrain modification, workshop structures, criminal scents),

while keeping everything good about UO (customized houses, skills improve separately by using them, variety in equipment, variety in monsters, dungeons and other interesting locations, rideable animals),

and adding other things that both need (a better magic system, magic item crafting and more diverse and involved crafting in general, different playable races, underwater environments, advanced town management like taxation and mandates and shared but accountable storehouses),

I think you'd have a game a whole lot of people would want to play.

In fairness, I would have left UO back in the day if I didn't have a regular mining partner and what not. Lets be fair.

But I suppose that is the same for any MMO.. if you take the second M out of the acronym you get boring time sink.
