Ultima Online

Did any of you ever play this?

I still play on UOGamers:Hybrid, a pre-AOS server. It'd be cool to see a bunch of dwarfs running around...  :)

Does Pre-AOS refer to when it was heavy PvP and skill-based?  A friend on WoW was talking about it and talked like it was the greatest thing on Earth, but said EA(I think, maybe someone else) ruined it by making it PvE-heavy.

UOGamers has several shards available, at least one is the skill heavy one. Hybrid is probably like that too, actually, seeing as how almost everyone seems to prefer it that way. UOGamers: Demise is an emulation of current, EA-powered UO.

I believe I played on Hybrid. I don't really like MMOs, but that one was pretty good. Always wanted to try to master Begging, hehe.

Yeah, oldschool UO had the best PvP ever for a number of reasons I won't list here; but they ruined the dynamic when they turned it into a WoW style treasure collecting fest.

Hybrid is the old-style shard with heavy pvp.

You should give it a whirl. :P They provide client downloads too.

I'm pondering making a guild of dwarves... if anyone else is interested?

I have played RUNUO UO:Demise for a while now.  I like it because it is really close to the real thing.  I think it would be cool to start a Hardcore RP guild where we not allowed to resurrect our characters.  I've played in one of these before and had a lot of fun.

If you tried that on Hybrid you'd get frustrated very quickly, heh. Most of the players there live for the kill.

Do you have to buy Ultima Online to play on a private server?

That's why I didn't really like Hybrid so much.  Too many Pkers who just want to ruin the game for everyone else.  Also, Hybrid doesn't have mounts does it?

You don't have to buy Ultima Online to play on a Private Server (or any server), you can download the client free, here

The client is distributed by EA free anyway. Afaik you only have to pay for a subscription on their official servers.

It does. It's UOG:Divinity that has no mounts.

I played on many shards.
Nah.
The best time was the time of alpha-much-pre-resurrection (I forgot the version name) when all of us were almost naked adventurers walking islands and battling skeletons in forgotten ruins with our -broken- copper battle axes.
It was an adventure, it was a quest. It was new and thrilling.
With time it became PvP fun only, PvE mess and exploration became boring.
Later I was tired of PvP and tried a new thing with custom houses and all, but it became stupid and boring at this point.

Nothing can return old-old-old times of newbie discoveries and later-old times of mass tournaments and guildwars.
Pretty beautiful childhood...
I will never forget the time when our guild killed our first dragon while being equipped with iron stuff only (no magical/valuable ore items) or when we've got our first keep.

[EDIT] The only thing that can drive me to UO now is some kind of server with hardcore roleplay, ban of side complex programs (those injection and other programs made it easy and handy but broke a lot of things; I can make macro things with programs like Autohotkey still) and DM-driven interesting quests. The realistic world and roleplaying atmosphere. But I don't think that there're shards like it now, they will at least lack one or more features I need. And players count is also very important.
I played on a server with fun quests and all, but it was no-PvP and too friendly so I became really bored.

And the last thing: don't miss your life. This is the main reason I quit UO.

I downloaded the client about an hour ago, I'm trying to download ConnectUO, but the link is dead.

You mean start a new private server?  That would definitely be cool to have a dwarf fortress only hard-core roleplaying shard to play on!

Use Razor instead of ConnectUO, I think it's much better, download here.
