I've got to try this when I get back into town. I have UO sitting on my hard-drive here. I picked up The Eight Age. Or was it the Seventh Age? Or maybe it was the Sixth Age. Blast it all!

At least, I think I can roleplay a dwarf. They're based on Irish/Scottish sterotypes, and I'm half Irish and half Scottish. I've got this in my blood.

Wow, not bad! Plenty of flavor and style without being much harder to read. As dwarves, do you folks tantrum at all?

If the Dwarfs want to get seriously set up on UOG: Hybrid, we might be able to help. I'm a leader of MS/EQ; the biggest and most hated guild on the server, we could provide you with some sort of alliance/protection racket that would enhance your roleplaying experience. Hybrid is the only widely populated UO server, the downside is the high risk of being ganked, we can alleviate that risk.

PM me if you'd like to discuss this further.

I wanna know too. I think I'll give it a try in the next day or two and I want to know "how ta find me kin!"

Then I'll need to learn how to talk. And swing a hammer. I have no idea how to play UO. Can you do crafting stuff and still kill goblins or whatever the bad guys are in UO, or do you have to focus on one or the other? Ideally I'd like to do both to some extent. Otherwise they're gonna have to change the whole game, because there's no way a dwarf can't defend himself just because he spends lots of time sweatin' in a forge.

"Lookit me muscles, ye stinkin' oaf! Ye think they're jest fer hammerin'? C'mere an' lemme knock on yer 'ead fer a wee bit, then tell me what ye be thinkin'."

I've been busy and such lately, but i'll hop back on, ready to play my dwarf some time soon.

oh, and if you know who you're looking for (Zon in my case, Monom in Ham's case.) you can find them if they're on, by using .online to bring up a player list to send them a PM.

They gave players a skill cap of 900 here, so you can dedicate 700 to a typical warrior build easily enough, and use 200 for mining/smithing, like any self respecting build, that's what i'm doing.

Of course, if you want a high damage setup, go with swordsmanship and lumberjacking, as all but one axe uses swords skill (War Axes use mace fighting.) as lumberjacking adds an additional percentage of damage with an axe. even a hatchet with a shield is high damage, that way, though many axes can't be wielded with a shield due to being two handers.

Ha ha, I'm glad to see you are okay Silleh, thought you went melancholic on me. Deon's still working on his artifact called real life.

Hrm.. how to brief the others...

Okay, we are a type of Giant-kin there (Miniaturized giants) Most of us are short (4'-5'), are breardy, loves to drink, loves to fight, and loves to tell insane stories (I usually talk about fortress mode failures and it stuns the crowds). Everyone starts out in Briar Hollow (Main Town/Newbie Town). I would STRONGLY suggest you stay there until you know your way around. The Dwarf Stronghold is actually a NPC Town between Briar Hollow and Nifol. Most of the dwarfs reside now in Nifol. A valley that's home to amoral, sex crazed, pointy eared giants called the Trow. They consider us their pets, we consider them backwater, non-industrial, giant hippies... pretty much and use their vanity to our betterment.Only a matter of time until they realize they are out gunned by our superior forces. Currently, relations with them are not hostile, and on feigned friendly terms.

We are in the process of organizing a dwarf council of -gasp- nobles and in the following weeks, with be electing a mayor (trying to keep the process as close to DF as possible)

Keiseth: When I fail at crafting items, I usually rp a small tantrum each time.

John Hopoate: I tried Hybrid before Grimmwold and have to say. Grimmwold seems alot more lively. Only person I met in my week stay on Hybrid was a ganker.

Torak: you can pm me (Hamenopi) in the grimmwold irc channel, or .online Monom in game. I'm usually around the tavern in Nifol when not at some event.

SeaBee: I'm a dedicated crafter that also fights, you can do both, find me and I'll hook you up with a set for free. Also the week on hybrid was my first time playing UO, after no luck there, I came here by Deon's request and many people helped me out. I now am pretty decent at the game. Also, that's not bad at all for an accent. I'd assume we'd all not talk the exact same way so it's really how the player feels like chatting.

Silleh Boy: Swords at 90! And dammit, I told you we need fisherdwarfs, cookerdwarfs, brewerdwarfs, lumberdwarfs, leatherdwarfs, and carpenterdwarfs too! =P You don't embark with 7 dedicated miners.... do you? I've hit legendary on Mining and Smithing already, working on woodcutting and carpentry now. I only have 900 points!

According to their own statistics Grimmworld has about 30 people on at any given time, Hybrid has about 800 on average

I'm going to try to play today for a little bit. Once I work out my character ... oh, and is it possible to change skills around while you play? If I find myself working on something that I don't want later, can I trade points for another skill? I just don't know what'll be fun.

That, and if the new version of DF comes out, I might be a little distracted by that too!

Gotta finish some work, first.

Edit: Rak Granitebeard is my name, I was getting some sort of awful lag and logged for a bit to see if it clears up. I had a really nice guy show me around, even took me to the dwarf town and got me started with mining and blacksmithing. Some nice people there. A woman stopped by and gave me my first starter tools to mine and smith with as a welcoming gift.

I haven't yet got into any combat. How's that work? I might make a sword later and see about swinging it at some rats or something. You press Tab to enter combat mode and then what? Just double left-click on a rat?

So far it's pretty fun, the interface and the tiny-arse view area bugs me but ... hey, I'll manage.

Go through the options and you can increase the view area to 800x600, and yes, combat's much a case of target something while in war mode and swing at it until you've killed it, it's killed you or you brave sir robin on it.

Dying isn't such a big issue at least, as here if you 'die' you get knocked out the first two times and if you die a third time within 20 minutes, then you actually 'die', and have to run back to get your stuff from your body.

Skills are not a big issue either. sure, they raise fast to begin with, and will rise slower and slower over time, but, when you hit 900 total skills, you can set skills up/down to allow the ones pointed down to drop, while any up one you train will raise in its place.

I have to admit though, i'm jealous, i seem to be the one of the few who didn't get a welcome and tour when i started there.

I've got my screen up to 800x600 for the viewable area, and have it maximized for all the additional black-space to put the other interface stuff. Problem is my LCD is native 1680x1050, so 800x600 is pretty small for me -- and my eyes are kind of bad for that. It works, though.

Yeah, the guy that gave me the tour (Denis something, wish I'd written it down) walked me around for HOURS. It was a big help since I had no idea how to do most things. I'm trying to get my wife interested in playing it with me while she's visiting family this summer, so she'll be a dwarf most likely -- she loves Dwarf Fortress. She's strange. Besides, this will give her some non-WoW, non-City of X MMO experience.

Thanks for all the info, sounds really awesome ... I wish other MMOs had skill systems like that. I'd much rather "re-train" my warrior to be a mage (or whatever) than roll a new character without any other option.

guys, i came to this forum topic by googling something about uo. I have read the topic, and i really like the idea of a bunch of drunk and filth-covered dwarfs establishing a keep and showing the rest of a well-mannered server what real fun is!

I want to join the grimmworld uo shard and team up with you.. i have a minor knowledge of the game, but i have the patience to learn...

and about my role in the squad... i really like crafting..even more than fighting.. so if i'm in you have one of those crafters you guys need... :)

all i want is some directions on where to go once i'm in and what is really happening in that mining village :P

and also some direction on what to write in that application for account,so that i would fit in the rp lore of the shard...

i will await your response :P
