"Ohcrapohcrapohcrap!"  Elspeth tried to pull up, but Tarmo was too close, too fast, and with the afterburners on she couldn't turn or slow down as quickly as she needed to.  Tarmo's sword sheared off a dome from the left of her cockpit, through the fusilage, sending a wing flying off.  The Ruby Darter lurched in the air, listing over as Elspeth cut the afterburners and desperately tried to regain control...

And then four blockbuster bombs slammed into Tarmo, who was still within a sword's reach of the Ruby Darter.  A large explosion briefly cast the entire arena into light, as the pressure wave cooked off the bomblets still rattling about the floor.  The rest of Elspeth's bombs promptly cooked off as well, erupting the rear of her mech in an even more immense blast that rattled the entire stadium as scraps of wing, bits of armor, and other shrapnel fly everywhere.  A clearly recognizable broken-off tip of Tarmo's sword slammed into the wall of the arena point-first, sinking deep enough to vanish from sight inside the hole.

And then, as suddenly as it appeared, the explosion and shrapnel vanished as both Tarmo and Elspeth's mechs give out entirely, their armor unable to withstand the earth-shaking blast.  Elspeth screams out in shock and panic, "NOT AGAIN!" and latched onto Tarmo with all four limbs like a limpet as the pair plummeted toward the hard floor of the arena.

The enormous shockwave combined with the sudden absence of fire and pain to convince Tarmo's instincts that he was dying meant that he was a bit more coherent than he was as he made the strike that ended the match. His first reflex was to try and kick Elspeth off of himself while he calmed the rest of the way down, but fortunately the awkward nature of the motion made it difficult. Instead, he did his best to twist in midair, rotating so that his legs would be the first thing to strike the ground. The pair struck the ground with a dull thud, and Tarmo hissed in pain. Elspeth could feel the one-handed grip tighten to the point of pain and past that slightly before he forced himself to relax, releasing her with a groan.

"That was certainly something," he commented after several moments, presumably after Elspeth climbed off of him. He seemed content to continue laying on the floor and pondering his defeat. That, or he was injured and didn't want to move; it was hard to tell.

"I...  I DIDN'T LOSE!"  Elspeth threw her arms in the air, a goofy grin spreading across her face as she did an indescribably dorky victory dance, "I fought the freaking Wandering Dragon to a STANDSTILL!  WOOOOOHOOO!  YEAH!"

Raguel vs NO EQUAL

The Wolf in No Equal smiled, he'd been looking forward to this fight the entire week, practicing each and every day to keep himself honed and ready. He cared little if he won, but like to make a good first impression. The old man couldn't help but feel pumped as well, the battle he had witnessed between his opponent and that man who embodied The Sun had his soul crackling with a fire unlike any other. He had been right to earn his way here, to get to witness the birth of new and powerful warrior souls. The scent of battle was alive as much as his Unequivocal Soul. His sword silently sang with the vim of a soul in it's youth again. It'd been awhile since Ookami felt so pumped and that hardly ended when he entered the arena.

He choose to observe first, it was truly what he preferred to do, even if he knew his opponent. Tapes and all that were useful but they were recordings of the past of one's soul. There was no telling how much a soul would grow and learn in the time absent from those tapes, from unseen battles or more "mundane" life experience. He watched as the young Caridin readied himself, he could see that shining soul through the darkest of nights. The shine paled in the oppressive light of that living star, but it shone bright now. It'd not be far to compare it to any celestial bodies for the boy's sake, more that of beacon to guide the weary eyes of the lost in it's radiance. Ookami placed his thumb on the guard of Soul, ready to draw it at a moment's notice if his opponent ran straight for him. He'd hoped this wouldn't happen, it'd prove the lad incapable of learning a simple lesson. But he was quickly shown that was a false worry. He saw the move the grasshopper was preparing, the pulse of his soul and the beginning of that release.

Caridin had a simple soul, an honest one. This was by no means a bad thing, but it made it akin to picking up a book and flipping it's pages. Ookami learned in his travels some books liked to try and claw your eyes out, spit flame in them, or tangle words and speak nothing in effort that you grow frustrated and give up. Caridin's book, was just a book. He laughed at the metaphor in his head... " BWAHAHA, Who has time for reading? There's fighting to do old man."

The first glimpse of his opponent was nothing more than a glint of silvery steel, small and seemingly nothing to worry about. But... surely Caridin had known of the fight between No Equal and the Ruby Darter. Every Tournament grinder worth their salt knew that fight. And it would click as suddenly as that blade rushed forward to meet Caridin. A steely fang blazed forth from the darkness. Ookami was already baring his fangs in a pearly grin that surely would catch the next glint of light if it weren't his muscles. This was gonna be fun.

Raguel v No Equal
Caridin's proximity sensors screamed to life as something rapidly entered his immediate vicinity, streaming the sensory data straight to his mind as the threat drew ever closer. Despite having the forewarning and knowing precisely where it was before he even saw the glint, the shock of just what his sensors had described to him still resulted in him shifting himself to the side a moment too late. A dull "Chink" and resounded as the tip of the blade carved a small scar into the outer layer of his plating as it glanced by. The damage wasn't a concern to him right now though, he had layers to spare, and this one still had quite a bit of integrity left.
"Ye... yer really him then..." Of course Caridin recalled that old viral video from a few years ago. Who in Tempest with moss net access hadn't seen it by this point? That blade extension trick was almost textbook from it. This truly was the man, the myth, the legend...

Unequivocal Soul

Caridin quickly shook off the shock though, there was no time to stand here thunderstruck. Some of the motes of light were still falling, and from what his sensors and eyes told him about the blade that had shot out of the darkness just now, he could roughly determine the direction of No Equal. Or at least the one he'd attacked from. Part of Caridin couldn't help but suspect he had curved that thing along the way in order to throw him off. There was only one way to be sure.
Taking what charge he'd managed to gain before the attack, he made a diagonal cut and again unleashed a small sphere of light in the direction he was fairly sure No Equal was or had been in. Just as with the last one, he modified the Coil of Light to trade its destructive potential for increased luminosity, and do so at a rate which grew greatly as the light traveled further. By the time it would reach the position he estimated No Equal had attacked from, it would be a blinding sphere that would easily illuminate anything in it's remote vicinity, though it would only hit with the force of a flashlight's beam by then. Not that this latter fact mattered, given Caridin had also encoded the sphere to slow to a halt if it came too close to any solid surface, and stay at said position until it's charge expired and it faded.

"If I ain't wrong, then I need to burst in. Otherwise he'll just fecking poke me to death from the dark while I try to find him again."

Midas vs Sycophant

In response to the sound of charging, the red outlines froze, only to quickly crouch down and meet his charge head on, claws beginning to glow red as it neared its opponent. Simply for show, seeing as it couldn’t touch Midas in any way.

At the same time as this, Sycophant made its move, dropping down from the wall soundlessly and running towards where the point of collision between Midas and the illusion would’ve been, if the illusion was physical. Celica had pinned down where exactly Midas was based on the sound, and was ready to strike.

And strike she did, silently and invisibly leaping at Midas’ side free of the threat of the shield and hammer. With his focus on her illusion, his weapon gone, and herself effectively unnoticeable, her victory was assured. She’d latch onto her opponent and tear off his mech’s arm and leg, then continue with the rest of the body once it was defenseless.

Neon Aletheia vs. Ethereal Hunter

EtHun wasn't so sure of herself that she'd think two shots would always end it; the distribution of armor mattered, the overall amount mattered, where she hit mattered; a lot of factors could usually go into explaining how she hadn't managed a take down by this point. Those ideas... didn't much apply here. There were a few possibilities; one was that she had some kind of super-armor with a really vulnerable weak spot. Another was that she was somehow getting all her shielding on the point of impact. There were others, but those seemed the most likely. Two options; keep hitting different spots until you find it, or try and bait to see what she's aiming to protect... and to be honest, the place was so dark that second one didn't seem likely. "You're eating these real well, I've gotta say. Would've figured you'd have taken a noticeable hit by now."

She was down to three drones, but as long as she had one left, Neon would have to treat all her shots as the real thing. As the bow charged again, the bullet hell started again. This wasn't going to be sustainable if she had to sacrifice a drone for a hit; if she was confident that she could take her down within two shots, which she usually would be by this point, that'd be one thing; but with an uncertain factor keeping her up she had to be more cautious... or bolder, perhaps. Instead of hanging at the edge, she started to get closer.

Midas vs Sycophant

Aleks looked at the outlines. Jumping towards him, at an angle to where his shield could easily block him...

Wait, what? That wasn't right. No one at this level was going to fall for a taunt that easily or that hard... unless...

Unless it was a trap. It wouldn't make sense for someone to directly attack his shield - especially if they'd done research on him and knew it was probably one of the toughest parts of Midas - so the attack had to come from the right. Letting instinct guide him like it had so many times before, Midas stretched out its arm...

Armor bonus used! Damage is from Sycophant's attack is completely blocked

Then came the familiar thud of metal against metal. Midas had caught Sycophant on its fist, keeping it from grabbing onto any more important sections like the shoulders or body.

Now for the followup. Midas slammed Sycophant into the ground with all its might, enough to dent or crack the ground at the point of impact.

Melee bonus used! Sycophant cannot respond to Midas's counterattack!

In the back of the arena, the hammer's jets began to fire up...

Midas vs Sycophant

Moments before Sycophant's claws had found their mark, a hand was thrusted into the mech's throat, halting its leap with a violent jolt. Instantly, the illusion that had taken Midas' focus dissipated, leaving the true Sycophant's red glow to be revealed in his hands.

"What the-" was all Celica allowed herself to say before Midas continued his counter attack, barely giving Sycophant the chance to begin digging into his arm before slamming it into the ground. Thankfully for Celica, Sycophant's armor held despite the ground slam, armor creaking as its pilot quickly processed what had just happened.

She must’ve been too predictable, made Midas realize something was wrong. That was the only explanation for how he could’ve reacted to her, unless he had a Spark designed to counter her own. Now here she was, pinned underneath his hand. As for his next attack, Celica couldn’t initially figure it out, at least until she noticed the shining lights coming from across the arena.

It didn’t take long for Midas’ plan to click in Celica’s head, along with the drive to prevent that plan from working in the first place.

Letting out a small growl, Celica’s hands flew across her controls, causing Sycophant to begin thrashing under Midas’ grip, claws digging and tearing into his armor as it tried to get out, to seemingly no avail. Once again, the thrashing was more of a distraction as the true threat prepared to strike; Sycophant’s tail, glowing red as it positioned itself just underneath Midas’ arm…

Celica uses Molten Fangs on her tail and her Melee Bonus, preventing Midas from reacting!

And then it struck, the superheated and sharpened tail cleaving straight through Midas’ arm, removing it from the main body and releasing the vice grip on Sycophant’s neck. As soon as the tail went through its target, Sycophant threw the arm off of itself, flipping itself back onto its feet, only taking the time to spring itself before leaping back towards Midas’ form, eager to finish the opponent off before his hammer could return and smash her from behind.

Midas vs Sycophant

Someone else might be panicking at this point. A missing arm and an opponent prepared to tear off a whole lot more... But Aleks?

This was what he lived for.

"Finally, some real fire!"

Maybe he was down one arm, sure, but he still had his other arm - and the shield it was holding.

He swung, intercepting Sycophant's leap with a shield bash - from a shield that had shrugged off cannon fire and sword strikes.

Neon Aletheia vs. Ethereal Hunter

"Headshot and stomach shot? It's about as noticeable as it could get. You won't be getting hits on me so easily anymore, though!" Neon answered cheerfully in response to her opponent's implicit doubts. She did realize that she was getting a bit suspicious, but that was only because she was getting hit. So, she decided that that would be the last shot she'd take from EtHun, and that she was to never realize just how much she was sacrificing to achieve the vague goal of ascension.

Neon wasn't about to fall for the same trick again. She put her priority on locating EtHun again. If she could finally decipher her position, she'd strip her of most of the advantages she was currently posessing. Carefully observing again, she felt like she was getting closer and closer to her objective, after all the back and forth that had happened in the fight.

Midas vs Sycophant

Neither Celica nor Sycophant gave a response to the armless victor of Greed, not as they leapt onto the shield, claws gripping the side as they merely rode the shield instead of trying to go against it. Even then, it was preparing its next move, jumping off the shield to get above and behind Midas’ form. At least, that’s what another illusion did, popping off of Sycophant’s body as the entire mech became a blur, reappearing on the ground in an instant.

Short Ranged Teleport- 4/5 used.

A mere moment afterwards, Sycophant struck, slashing heavily at where she assumed Midas’ knee would be, aiming to knock him off balance so she could finish this battle off. She could care less of he was enjoying being beaten. All that mattered to her was the victory.

Midas vs Sycophant

Aleks didn't bother trying to resist the force of the attack - instead, he positioned Midas' shield in front and leaned forward. Sycophant would rapidly find itself pinned from the result of its own attack - being crushed by the sheer weight of Midas and its massive shield.

Midas vs Sycophant

Since Celica had expected Midas to at least try and stay on his feet instead of going with the momentum of her attack and fall on top of her, the noble had no time to move out of Midas' shield, only being able to stand on its hind legs in an attempt to push the shield away. Unfortunately, Sycophant didn't have the natural strength to actually do so, landing on its back, claws digging  into the shield as Midas' full weight pressed down on her. Thankfully for her, at least for now, Sycophant was strong enough to prevent itself from being crushed by that weight.

Taking a second to process this, Celica went to work once again, super heating both her mech's claws and teeth with her spell before tearing into the shield, her claws digging into it in order to gain a tight grip with the teeth began to take out significant chunks of metal. It wasn't immediate, nor was it fast, but it was still doing what many mechs before couldn't: Leave significant damage in Midas' shield. Though it was a bad position, Celica was confident in her ability to take the shield out and begin attacking Midas, even with the pin. It wasn't as if he could do anything aside from keep her trapped there, considering he lacked more than one arm.

Midas vs Sycophant

"Yes, yes! Now we're seeing it! Seeing the struggle! The challenge!"

Midas didn't get knocked down too often during fights - but Aleks knew that as long as it still worked, he could move it. Midas' leg had been slashed pretty badly by Sycophant's claws before - but it was still in one piece, and as long as it was, he could stand back up. The golden mech lifted itself up by its legs, giving Celica's mech just enough room to make a slightly bigger swing with its claws, perhaps --

Then he slammed back down, crushing Sycophant once more.

Maybe not the glorious clash of weapons like he'd imagined - but some of the most fun in these fights was reacting to the unexpected. So far, Celica seemed to be reacting just fine.
