Midas vs Sycophant

Like before, Celica gave no response to her opponent. Unlike before, however, she had learned. Her eagerness to strike was leaving her open to counter attacks, which meant she had to change her game plan. So when Midas unexpectedly lifted his shield, Sycophant didn’t bother trying to make a grand attack to make sure that she wouldn’t be crushed again. Instead, she used her dug in claws to her advantage, quickly pushing herself out from underneath the shield, almost getting her entire mech out before her opponent slammed down upon her once again. However, the shield managed to crush at least one part of Sycophant: The tail that had just barely been left behind, its superheated nature making is simple to crush it in its entirety, heated metal flattening into thin sheets while the unheated metal groan and splintered under the weight.

But it had done its job, leaving Celica to finally finish the fight properly.

Though Sycophant was initially on its back, a simple push with its upper body allowed its claws to meet Midas’ back, digging into the armor and using it as an anchor to pull the rest of Sycophant’s body up, while also pushing Midas down beneath her. By now, both mechs were pinned, Sycophant’s tail being crushed and held firm by Midas’ shield, while Midas was unable to push himself from the ground because of Sycophant’s force and weight.

At least, not fast enough for Sycophant to begin digging in, super heated claws and teeth digging into Midas’ armor like cheap paper, specifically towards his shoulders and neck.

To be beaten by someone who he had looked down at, calling a coward before she had shown her prowess… Yes, all the rage she had naturally felt because of this man was gone. Now was just the calm satisfaction of an assured victory.

Midas vs Sycophant

With Sycophant pinning Midas, clawing at the armor and tearing it apart as though it was nothing, Aleks took stock of the situation and what had led up to it.

Amidst the chaos of the melee, he'd forgotten to make use of his own weapons - that had given his foe an opportunity to turn the tables and put him in this state. His hammer couldn't reach them in time, and his shield and remaining arm were too busy pinning down Sycophant's tail for him to use.

With no real means of breaking free... Aleks let go of the controls to his mech. Midas fell limp, and motionless.

Not before giving Celica one last gift, though. Midas' boombox blasted one last tune to signal submission.

"All right, all right, you got me. Good job, by the way."

Midas vs Sycophant

Once Midas' form slumped down and no longer tried to resist Sycophant's attack, the mech froze in a near instant, claw raised to continue the attack, its other hand still pressing down on the ruined armor. As soon as she had fully processed the surrender though, Midas had done one last act... His mech sounding off a little fanfare to mark the victory. Which confused and angered the young noble. She had won, but how could he just... Play a song right after losing? And then continue to freely compliment her? He should've fought tooth and nail for victory, no matter the situation.

Gods, she hated this man.

Freely rolling her eyes in the privacy of her own mech, Celica allowed herself the victory, having Sycophant lower its claws to rest on the broken, jagged pieces of Midas' shoulder, "Same to you. I'll admit, I'm impressed that you managed to react so quickly to my teleportation. Was I really that obvious?" Celica asked, pushing down her frustration towards the man and returning to her cheerful, and clearly satisfied, voice.

Neon Aletheia vs. Ethereal Hunter

It was getting to be a rough fight. So far, she had been the only one to do significant damage to the opponent... probably, hopefully... but she was down a drone, and the enemy hadn't seemed to really notice those hits. And moreover, the bursts chasing down shots were getting more and more accurate as it went on; she was figuring out how to find her, since she wasn't completely invisible with all the bursts around. So she had to start getting a bit bold, force her to use up some armor eating another hit before trying for a finish. And to do that, as she started to figure out where shots would be coming from, Maddie had to get kinda bold.

So where wouldn't she expect a sniper? Up close. She was pretty sure she could retreat afterwards still, her own resources weren't out; she felt she had some glitches left in her, she had her smoke, she had her boots and reactive armor; she wasn't going to get out unscathed by any means, but she figured she might be able to get closer. So when her bow was at around two thirds charge she started moving; when she had to make a particularly complex dodge she had some drones fire to divert Neon's attention to the dodge, even if only a bit, getting closer...

Neon Aletheia vs. Ethereal Hunter

What EtHun was doing would've been a brilliant move, were she completely invisible. However, noticing the lack of shimmering was already easier than locating the shimmering itself. The shimmering Neon had expected to see around the edge began to die down, with only the drones' moving shadows left. By simple elimination, she was able to guess that her opponent was approaching up close for a critical shot - an exceptionally bold move, only understandable considering how she might have become more desperate to inflict noticeable damage over her. Of course, Neon couldn't actually see EtHun when she was inching towards her at a lower speed that would prevent her from getting exposed. But all signs seemed to point towards that conclusion.

She, however, decided not to expose her immediately. She kept a count of EtHun's charging time, so she knew that she'd have a bit more grace period before her next attack. And presumably, EtHun was using that time to approach. In meantime, she feigned ignorance, and inserted some more directed bursts in her bullet hell every now and then to threaten the increasingly noticeable drones. Of course, at the same time, the resulting lack of shimmering only further confirmed her guess. The consequence of the change of tactics was of course, her having to lighten the load on some areas - which just so happened to be beneath her, intentionally chosen to encourage her opponent to get even closer, while giving off the feeling that she was getting impatient and starting to dispatch the drones she could locate first. Sacrificing some of the bullets going right below her was also the least suspicious move she could make, as that would be what anyone in her position would sacrifice first to gain an edge - what kind of hunter would come that close to their prey, anyway?

And, just a second before the grace period ended. She suddenly spiraled head first towards the floor, her bullet hell converging into a conic spotlight below her. It was a directed trap that would easily cover the smaller circle of area around her where she had figured her opponent would be. She had expected the attack to catch her opponent, but did not expect it to do her in. After all, it was meant to startle her opponent and reverse the roles in the battle.

Midas vs Sycophant

"Simple, really. When the fight started, you seemed more interested in trying to sneak up on me than charging straight forward. You're not the kind of person who'd change tactics just because a stranger called them "some bitch'." It was a simple statement of fact, and not a jab. "So, when you leaped straight at me... Or, should I say, when those red outlines leaped straight at me, I figured something was amiss." Though Celica couldn't see it, Aleks grinned.

"I gotta say, that was one of the best fights I've had this whole year! The amputation was a master stroke - and the fact you were able to keep on fighting even after I fell on top of you? You've got moxie. I'm glad I was able to see some of it."

Neon Aletheia vs. Ethereal Hunter

As Maddie got near enough for her shot, she started getting suspicious; Neon had started focusing fire on the drones at the expense of the bullet curtain below her. Sure, it was a perfectly reasonable decision, but up to this point Neon had been rather cautious. But it was getting to be do or die, and she had to pull something major whether it meant taking damage or not. So that meant she was getting closer anyway. Nearly charged... almost there... almost...

And then abruptly, energy rained. Neon had stopped shooting to the sides and started shooting down. But Maddie remained calm; she'd expected to be found out, and at this range Neon would have trouble avoiding a shot - it was practically point blank for her bow. She took her shot, the deafening crack ringing through the arena on it's own for once as a spike of metal traveled directly upwards at obscene speed, towards Neon's core; Maddie hadn't actually figured it out yet, but the angle combined with the position Neon had taken to shoot lead to the center of mass being the best target, and a shot to the gut hadn't done much.

After she saw the result of the shot, the bullets rained down, Maddie used her speed-glitch (3/5 remaining); it wasn't far enough to get her out of the cone but it got her to the edge enough that she wouldn't just eat a dozen hits. Instead, she took one, a lower back plate detonating and sending Ethereal Hunter flying back; she had maybe a few seconds of pitch black before the bullet hell began again, which she'd use to hopefully get a move on from where Neon would expect her to be.

Midas vs Sycophant

So it really was just simple instinct, combined with her being obvious. If a fight obsessed meathead like Midas could figure out her tricks, then she had to start getting more creative. Letting out a small sigh, Celica leaned back in her mech, finally relaxing after the stressful few minutes that had come during the fight. She was annoyed at how easily she was letting herself be read, but she didn't know how to feel about Midas' comments about her 'kind of person' or 'moxie'. She was pretty certain that she hated it.

"Thank you. It was something I came up with on the spot... I'm never exactly the one being pinned to the ground. Besides, as long as one has energy, they should keep striving for victory, even when the odds are against them, right?" Celica admitted, somewhat playfully pressing down on Midas' shoulder as she said the final part, "... But yes, this fight was enjoyable. I'm glad I was able to give you the spectacle you asked for" she added shortly after. In reality, she still didn't care, but it was the words she said that mattered right now, not how she felt.

Neon Aletheia vs. Ethereal Hunter

When Neon said she wasn't letting herself get hit again, she meant it. She may not be able to move in response to the point-blank attack, but she can still deflect it. Her shield morphed into the shape of a conic spike pointing at the incoming shot, and spun it away with all its might. Not taking the shot with her flesh meant that she didn't have to take in all the knockback, so perhaps surprising EtHun, she was able to pay full attention to her, seeing her warping away but still getting ejected by another bit of chip. She did not intend to let her go so easily anymore, and bounced herself against the ground and towards the spot where EtHun was hit.

As an immediate follow-up, she sprayed a deluge of energy blasts at EtHun's escape, spread out slightly so as to continue to highlight her movement, while still being much harder to evade since the attack wasn't spread out into the entire arena anymore. After that, every wave of bullets seemed to build upon the last, like trailing searchlights. She of course chased after the trail of disturbances this would make.

6 Armor Bonus: Negate one attack completely.

Neon Aletheia vs. Ethereal Hunter

Ethereal Hunter was caught by surprise when the shield spiked away the shot, but kept moving... unfortunately, the deflection had also deflected the impact itself, meaning Neon was free to pursue.

While she managed to get out of the initial rain, there were more and more shots, and the high speeds she had to move to keep ahead of the main curtain meant that she had to keep moving. While keeping her not-yet-damaged side to Neon, she had one of her drones take on the decoy effect and move the other way, the trail of distortion moving in two directions at once. Meanwhile, her remaining two drones took potshots while Neon was focused on trying to down EtHun.

The deflection had been different than before; past shots, she had managed to break some shielding. But that time, she diverted her shields to deflect the shot entirely. Did that mean she'd just hit where the armor was the strongest, or was she actively protecting something? She didn't have much time to think about this yet though, as she charged her next shot. Neon was narrowing in on her - she would have one, two shots at the most to find her weakness and take her down, or else she'd be chip-damaged to destruction.

Neon Aletheia vs. Ethereal Hunter

Neon mixed up her approach naturally according to how EtHun had tried to strafe away from her, though it was still making dodging the drones' attacks very bothersome. And then, the hunter's trail split into two. Her opponent really seemed to want her to keep making more blind guesses, but it was just a less and less appealing deal to even consider the guess.

She took the third option again. She could feel that the two drones behind her were approaching more boldly because she was focusing fire on EtHun. Both the sound of their shots and the narrowing time for dodging were enough to tell her that. So, she made another surprise move, and suddenly kicked herself backwards, right into one of the drones behind her. She first scanned the drone's position, obtaining its schematics, and then fried the little thing with a burst of electric arcs, cracking it apart.

With that, she began to mass-produce her own drone swarm. They were like sparrows - though cheap and small, they came packed with everything needed to function properly. A pair of remote drones formed subtly behind her, and vanished into the darkness without a trace. A new trap was in the works - EtHun may or may not have heard of Neon's Spark, but she wouldn't be absolutely certain whether she was able to get the schematics while the drone was still intact. And even if she knew all that, with all the darkness around, she wouldn't be able to know where they were until she pulled the trigger.

The drones she were laying down were each given a fairly simple command - to cover as much ground as possible. They moved into position one by one, just hovering slightly over the floor. In the event of a very unfortunate collision, they would fire back at the source of the collision, but otherwise, they would remain absolutely silent. In meantime, to cover her true intent, she began to unleash several more curtains of bullets at several directions, appearing to be trying to light up her opponent's movement again.

As she pulled upwards again, more drones were under production. Her bullet hell was subtly adjusted to miss the few spots that were stationed. This would be the fourth time in this battle where she was in this position; it almost began to feel like home. With only two drones left on EtHun's end, and all the experience Neon had accumulated up to this point, EtHun's chances of sniping her down decreased further and further.

Raguel vs. NO EQUAL!

The boy should've trusted his intuition, it was actually quite swell. But such was new advice, new information. Once you've been told to start thinking, you think too much, you don't trust what your gut tells you when you need to. Sometimes the best thinking one did never actually needed to linger in the mind. A lesson Ookami had learned well, and hopefully could pass on to this youngster~

There were many times of blade in this world, perhaps once as vast as the catalog of mechs. Ookami knew his instrument well, and that included every little aspect of it. He had 60 long years to learn every little piece of his body and his soul. Perhaps he had an easier time then most would've with his ability to see souls. Though, not even he understood every piece of himself. But what he did understand was the shape of his soul was that of a blade, regardless of anything else he knew this above all else. Blades took many forms, as did his soul.

Cardian's light revealed no man, only the blade he had correctly assumed attacked from a different angle. However it had revealed to him something he wasn't prepared for, as he saw the slinking metal retract behind him as if a silver snake retreating into shadow. The blade looked like liquid as it went... it wasn't rigid and the strike he had felt from the front... was because it had whipped around his mech like a lash! In that moment the mad wolf lunged forward, his sword becoming it's true self once again, a katana. Ookami rushed at Cardian's flank, the ambush predator made his opening and sprung forth. With a surge of dull red flame he burst forth with speed inhuman for a man with no visible mech assisting him. This... wasn't something that fated fight ever showed. Ookami rushed in at a low guard, he'd swing upwards, aiming to tear Cardian's armour in twain, and even if he could respond in time land a blow that would further his advance that much more than his opponent. With that swing another feint came as well, but this one a verbal one, a mighty guffaw followed by an earnest question.

"BWAHAHA! So boy! Tell me!" The wolf white with age barked. "How was the tea?"

Neon Aletheia vs. Ethereal Hunter

Ethereal Hunter winced when her drone got smacked down - she knew about Neon's abilities, and how she could duplicate, but could she duplicate a weapon she'd destroyed? She wasn't sure, but she had to be careful. The bullet hell began again, getting nearer and nearer, and she knew that she was out of time. This was do or die, and she'd only get one more shot. She had a suicidal plan - one that would only work in this environment and hopefully if Neon's hits had at least scratched away some armor. But at this point, there weren't many options.

She'd only used her stomp to escape once - and it had been charging ever since then. Her bow was charged, and at point blank it would be nigh impossible to dodge or deflect, and hit harder. Enough to breach her shield and break the mech? She didn't know, but hopefully. The problem was that a stomp, once she saw what was happening, was predictable. But then... Maddie still did have two drones. She only needed one for this to work, hopefully. And hopefully, it was a suicidal enough move for Neon not to expect it to be the real one.

The bow hit full charge, and it was time to go. She didn't say a word - not out of a cool focus, but because she was terrified she'd give her plan away if she spoke. In a small break in the bulletstorm, she stopped. Her drones came to her, and she gave Boo a pat - it was the decoy, right now, and probably in more danger. And then it was time to go.

Maddie raised her left leg, and stomped.

A deafening crash echoed through the arena, and a cloud of illusory smoke obscured the spot she'd launched from. Two distortions flashed past shots, on different potential trajectories for EtHun's leap and on a path that would get near Neon. But as they hit a certain point, one of the drones fired - just a normal shot, but one that crashed into the second of four back plates and blew the real one forward and directly towards Neon. The drone fire again, pushing her faster, and she had one more course correct in her back pocket after that if she needed it.

Neon Aletheia vs. Ethereal Hunter

Just the jump alone was already a surprise. There were three trajectories being drawn out of the smoke, but all of them were visibly planned to arch towards and collide with Neon - or at least, to get very near her. The intent was undeniably clear - EtHun was attempting for a point-blank shot. Just the move alone radiated immense bravado. It was as if believing the impossible would actually make it possible.

She had managed to preserve her shield in near-perfect status up to this point. Even if she were to take a direct snipe into her core, she would still be able to survive. But just seeing the Gluttony-born prodigy taking this move was enough to make Neon act like she would not.

To describe it more aptly, it was as if all of Tempest was behind her.

Neon shuddered ever so briefly. The drones Neon had scattered around the arena sprung to fire in a crazed attempt to intercept all three trajectories, on top of Neon's own shots. But then, EtHun doubled down on her final gambit, and had her own drones fire at her to propel herself and increase her air speed even further, at the expense of her own reactive armor.

It felt like EtHun's determination had suddenly filled the arena, choking Neon out of air. Neon's eyes grew hallow. Was it dread? Was it despair?

She must have noticed.

The drones on her rear suddenly shifted their focus to the other two drones' trajectories, and so did her own blasts, while the drones laid before her began to focus fire on EtHun's back. She knew well what she was doing with this, that this meant inviting her opponent with open arms, at a speed even greater than what she herself may have anticipated.

Neon had five chances of speed glitching left, while EtHun had already used up two. Unless your name was Blink, the amount of distance one teleport can cover is pretty much the same across all mechs with access to it. And so she thought, that at the very least, she could go down on her own terms.

She readied herself. The goal was never to just win as many matches as possible, yet it was still depressing, that she was so minuscule before Ethereal Hunter's determination.

Neon Aletheia vs. Ethereal Hunter

The bullet hell didn't stop - there were so many near misses, even some hits dead on to the parts where she'd lost armor. Her sheer momentum kept her on course, although she was shouting a mixture of battle cry and terror into a closed mic. Then she felt a thump on her back as the lasers of the false drones hit her back plates and launched her, faster, faster! She was out of armor on the back, and indeed she only had a few chest pieces, a leg, and one arm's worth of armor left. But that didn't matter; if this didn't work she was out anyway.

The boost to her speed was unexpected - she didn't have time to get her feet beneath her, to launch Neon into the ceiling or ground with her last kinetic launch as she drew and fire. She moved at a breakneck speed, fast enough that her shimmer was fairly well outlined by Neon's bullets. She nearly missed, but a last second short teleport (2/5 remaining repositioned her and kept her momentum so that when she hit, her bow was directly up against the core.

She didn't belong here. She knew that. She knew everyone else did too. But she had to act like she did, and maybe she'd eventually start to convince them. Neon had controlled the battle up to this point, but Ethereal Hunter wouldn't let it end so simply.

Time seemed to slow down, an instant that took ten seconds. She didn't stop to breath as she released her nocked railbow round directly into Neon's core from as close as the shield would let her get. Looking from behind her helmet directly into Neon's eyes, she fired and braced for the impact.

Firepower bonus used! Unavoidable shot!
