We're going to kill SEED, Alphira. The generals of this land can join our vengeance or perish.

One agrees.

Their war is outdated, crude. -We- can turn it into an art. More will pointlessly die if we do not seize control of this military, this war, these people. As soon as we leave here. If you cannot see that, then you are as blind as them.

They send you into a meat grinder and you nod and smile and say yes sir, like a good little soldier.

"Phebe?" William questions, voice muffled beneath steel.

Those old bastards die. Either now or later. No leniency. Even if they are the most faithful servants when we get back. Their foolish notions will stain our history on this world by proximity.

"Phebe." William repeats himself, kneeling to look you in the eye, peeling off his helmet.

"Mother Alphira?" Anderson adds on, approaching as your men slowly begin to take cover.

"Take cover and stay alert.  I am evaluating the situation."

I have no love for these men that threaten to kidnap Emma and kill us when we are no longer useful.  Let them burn.

Ahh this is one of those times when we do morally ambiguous stuff for survival's sake innit

...

...ah well. Thin justification will have to be justification enough.

We might save lives by switching to a strategy that doesn't heavily involve attrition, but I'm not as enthusiatic about treason as my words might make you think.  But, we have to do what we have to do to survive.

Send squads to your soldiers. Tell them to dig in. Send runners back to-- why don't these morons have radios yet!? Back to the artillery. Tell them to move in closer and annihilate the plaza and church. tell them friendly forces are danger-close, to keep them on their toes. We should be clear, but they might be innacurate.

And you are going to walk into that plaza, and...well, I'll leave that to you. I'm sure you'll figure something out to help.

Give the necessary orders.

I've an idea there. These Thornton fusion rifles-- d'you suppose we could get one to blow its load all at once, straight into the plaza? Like overloading a las-pistol, but bigger and better!

Why bother? Why not just throw the damn thing and overload the reactor in a clump of vermin?

[18]Did you notice that they were using incendiary rounds in the previous barrages?

Your men look at you in confusion. The Major as well, but to his credit, or perhaps yours, he doesn't hesitate to do as ordered. William sends a set of mercs with each squad, for added protection. Your soldiers dig in and you can feel the concern in the air. You, at the behest of William, move into some cover as well to converse with the voices in your head.

"Do you know what the central structure in the plaza might be?  The Lieutenant said it was resistant to bombing."

A rifle as a bomb... delightful. I'll remember that trick.

No...the Strain of our childhood home was far more feral. It robbed our nursery and creche for food, and used swarm tactics...this one is whittling down your numbers with hit and run. It's smart and can communicate more effectively.

You sit and wait in silence with William, until the squads return. Major Anderson approaches the two of you, and he looks grim. "Our flanks report fifty percent losses, Mother Alphira. Major Jackson is dead. Gem, the Thornton Merc, assumed command of that flank. She executed the next in command for dereliction of duty. By all accounts, she's the only one who kept her head on her shoulders."

William smiles that butcher's smile and Anderson gives him a dark glare "I'm not happy William."

[20+1 vs 2] Suddenly William surges from his crouch, a metallic hand wrapping tightly around Anderson's throat. It tightens briefly as the Major fumbles for his cutter blade- it falls from his shaking hands. He glances to you tensing and lets the Major go. William brushes the man's armor clean of dust, staring down at the other man, "Then get better officers, Major Anderson."

William leaves, and Anderson scowls after him but doesn't press further.

Overhead, you hear a whistle, and the ground rattles beneath your feet. Emerging from your cover, you notice a plume of smoke and dust rising from where the plaza should be.

They've found their mark.

That's your cue, Patches. Go put on a show for these simpleminded fools.
