Nice fight. Writing was really good too, it's so hard to capture the feel of in-game events in a lot of community and succession forts. You had just the right amount of description-to-picture ratio. Made it very easy to follow.

Your words make me very happy. ^-^

I wound up pausing the game and advancing it frame-by-frame to get those screenshots, writing as I went. T'was tedious, but there wasn't really any other way to capture those little position-frames... was worth it tho!

Earthentomb: Play with fire...

Elves!

They're looking a little less regal this time 'round.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Slowly they make their way to the depot, passing by the remains of last year's ettin attack on the way.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Their offerings are depressingly useless
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
so I just let 'em stew 'til they leave.

Ooh! Ooh ooh!
My minecart-pumpy-things are finally ready!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Finally!

I order the draining area cleared of any stray debris
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and a green-glass screw pump constructed at the spot.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The steel minecarts I had constructed last year are hauled into position
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and a magma-safe gabbro door set in place.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's pumpin' time!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Hahaa YES
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
yes yes yes
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
YES
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
YES!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ahh-haha-ha-ha. Now to go set up some forges up topside!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It's the most wonderful tiiime of the yearrrr

Minion day!
Also apparently mayor day? Whatever. We'll set something up sometime.

Anyway. We get a nice mix of draftees and haulers out of this latest wave, with a couple medics and crafters thrown in.

Hm, now I have to try and outfit the new draftees... I can't give 'em great armor, and they'll have to make do with kinda junky weapons... we can give 'em shields tho! Really nice shields!

Everybody likes shields!

That's funny, everybody's going over to the brook to drink... now why would they--
Spoiler: Wait a minute. (click to show/hide)
Gahhh STUPID STUPID STUPID

Cursing my forgetfulness, I grab a random migrant and start him brewing drinks at highest priority...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
...and draft an extra planter and activate an unused plot while I'm at it.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
What on earth was I thinking?

Ah! My magmacarts are in position at last!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Now to lay down some dumping stops for 'em...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
...and fool around with hauling routes...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
There!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now for magma!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Ahhahaha
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That's one done! Let's do another and another and--

wait

stop

Not in that one
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
There's still a guy in that one
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Nononononono
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Well that was stupid.

I legit said out loud "Oh. Oh noooooooooo!"  Poor dwarf. Ah well, when working with magma I imagine accidental deaths are unavoidable at some point.

I mean, at least nobody will have to see the body. Looked important though, generally dwarves with slashes in their profession name are useful.

Soo I'm about to attempt some major tinkerings with my laptop. I don't want to lose this fortress if I accidentally brick the lot, so... save file!

http://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=14498

Also pictures and a writeup for the next update, 'cos I don't want to lose that either.

You can't beat yourself up too bad if only 1 dwarf has died so far. 100 on the other hand...

Also could i have a dorf? Any gender or job or whatever will do :)

Whoof, it's been a little while... but this game ain't dead yet! Some of these dwarves, on the other hand...

Even in times of tragedy, life must go on.

Walls rise
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
industry thrives
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
soldiers train
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
poets multiply (!)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and I bemoan my ever-growing list of setbacks.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
By happy happenstance, our shaft of choice bypasses the water completely... still, I'm gonna have a lot of buliding to do.

Her-r-r-re's humans!

Start haulin', boys!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I didn't get much metalcraft done what with all the magma I had to move around, so we're mostly exportin' shields this time round...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
...fortunately, the shieldwork of Id the woodworker is stellar as always. We manage to scrounge up well over 20,000 dorfbucks for the trade! I buy up all the bronzework I can get my hands on, and the merchants leave ecstatic.

Our chief medical dwarf has been taken by a creative spirit!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
She's got no real craft-skill to speak of
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
so she simply beelines for the craftsdwarf's
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
gathers her supplies
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and sets to work.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
In a few days or so, she's done.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The resulting artifact is... predictably underwhelming.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Yes, it's very pretty Sigun... now get back to work. That rock won't haul itself!

Migrant day!

I draft a couple people, reserve a couple people... and order some gates constructed for the keep. We're gonna need them.
We've hit siege trigger.

It's about time, methinks, I considered the power supply for this magma contraption of mine.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
An underground waterwheel system should do nicely.

Oop, trogs in the magma-stacks
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Before I even realize what's going on, axecaptain Kubuk is already going to town on the little nasties.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I must say, the dwarf has style... just lookit those body parts fly!

I send in our good macecaptain to deal with the stragglers.

One.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
After that, it's just murder.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Even one of the macedwarves gets a couple good hits in.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's not long before Kubuk decides he's had enough.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Gah!

I... I must have left a thing open?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
...Ayup. I left a thing open.

Mosus takes one look at the interloper... and proceeds to grab it by the hand and hurl it around like a sack of potatoes.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Mosus then beats a hasty retreat, and I send a few military types in to finish off the lil' varmint.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
They do quite efficiently.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The nasty tried to hurl some fire about, I see!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's a good thing my soldiers don't bother with clothes.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Who needs the stuff, with armor like this?

Wait. Wait. No

No

Citizens dead in Earthentomb: 2

It's high time I set up a proper resting-place for our honored fallen.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
There... that oughta do nicely.
We're a mere 3 levels over the magma sea. Our dead will rest in coffins of stone
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
in tomb-chambers of stone
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
with the beating heart of the earth throbbing beneath them.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That, I think, is as good a resting-place as any dwarf could hope for.

No. Just no. You 'orrible little varmints don't get to kill anyone else.

Well, life goes on. Splint gets a new pair of draftees to train up
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
and I take comfort in the wondrous skill of our artisans

and in the steady progression of our infrastructure.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Come to think of it, this other bedroom floor's looking kind of funny... oh!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Oh oh!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
That dead engraver is back!
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
He's so harmless... no need to memorialize him just yet. It's nice having him around, even if he is just a shadow of himself.

1. When you get your first stack made, just pump magma on top of the water that keeps the other stack from being made. Problem solving with magma! Oh yeah, and bonus points if you light the caverns on fire doing so.

2. If you're about to get a useless wood artifact, forbid the main ingredient after they start working, and suddenly it will turn out as an useless iron artifact. Make sure there's at least one other not-main ingredient or the dorf will just go insane. Then again, that might be too cheatsy for you considering you're selling shields and not like, serrated discs or battle axes or whatever.

3. I hope you've learned to never, ever, leave the magma sea open. I think you can stick a floor grate over the hole you need for your magma pump while still letting your pump take from the sea. Seems everything kills your important dorfs.

Ayup. The first one died from the initial fireburst, and the second... tried to put on the first guy's copper armor while it was still superheated. If you check those screenshots, you'll notice the second guy's corpse is positioned directly on top of the first one...  ::)

To quote the greatest general ever: "STOP DYING YOU COWARDS!"
This is a quote I had not heard before. It amuses me greatly, and I will keep it close to heart for future occasions.

Well, technically the line is "Stop exploding you cowards!" but I don't think these dwarves exploded so much as caught fire and melted.
