You venture down into the lowest part of Abystok, half imagining you can feel the weight of the ocean pressing through the stone above your head. You pass rows of hallways leading to the cozy homes of your many subjects, silent and dark now. As you descend further, the central corridor comes to its natural end and you must choose one of three branches to follow: on the left, an earthy smell permeates from the way to Abystok's deepest cavern farms; in the centre, the sloping rampway drops away toward the exploratory mine tunnels; and to the right, a narrow hallway snakes out to one of the private areas belonging to the runesmiths.

A) Left!

You slip furtively into the runesmiths' passage, taking care to quiet your footsteps. The hallway is narrow and twisting, and you see no doors or openings to either side as you go.

Eventually, you hear the unmistakeable sound of another walker behind you! You have a headstart yet, but whoever is there will surely catch up to you if you continue moving slowly and quietly.

A) Turn back!
B) Run ahead!
C) Walk ahead at a normal pace!
D) Look for a side pathway to dodge down.

You turn around and head back out of the tunnel, acting profoundly interested in the stonework at your side. Your apparent fascination only deepens as you near the source of the footsteps, and you think you have a good chance of getting past without being recognised when — suddenly you hear a voice saying: "Oh, hello, your majesty! I didn't expect to see you here at this hour!"
