Elecromagnetically Assisted Grenade Launcher "Jumper"
A portable variation on the Thumper tubes built into all Raiders, the Jumper incorporates a six stage coilgun into the barrel, and a copper wire coil into compatible grenades. Other than this coil, Jumper grenades are identical to Thumper grenades. The form factor of the Jumper is that of a fat shotgun with an underslung housing containing electronics and a cooling system. Loading the Jumper is performed by inserting a Jumper grenade directly into the rear of the gun, as without an explosive charge, an unvented barrel would actually decrease projectile velocity. A mechanical release button allows unfired grenades to be retrieved if it becomes nessecary. To feed the coilgun power, the Jumper uses the first mass produced SynthOil batteries, and includes a radioactive "key" which the batteries are slotted around when loaded. Each brick sized battery is good for five shots before needing to be replaced, with a plug-and-play design making this almost as easy as loading the grenades themselves.

In operation, the Jumper is almost silent (not counting the grenades exploding), and slightly improves on the range, accuracy, and rate of fire advertised by Cannala's portable Thumper, with dramatic improvement to rate of fire over the five shots until the battery needs replacing.
Revision: Electromagnetically Assisted Grenade Launcher "Jumper"
Impossible: (4+2)-3 = 3: Buggy Mess

It turns out that introducing a small effective coilgun while also creating SynthOil batteries is quite hard. But we persevered through. Kind of.

The biggest road block we encountered was the SynthOil battery. It took an extreme amount of effort to miniaturize our "engine" prototype to the point where we could fit it into batteries. The batteries work, but they're still inefficient. Each battery can power one shot before running out of "charge".
The second-biggest road block was trying to make an effective coilgun in a revision (along with the Synthoil Battery). But again, we did it. It just barely managed the range and accuracy of  a Thumper. It has a decreased rate of fire not even regarding the one-shot-per-battery, as the SynthOil battery has to take roughly 30 seconds to "discharge" itself once it's inserted - our crude version of the battery can't quickly convert the SynthOil to electricity. It is completely silent, luckily.

Everything else is fairly close to what we wanted. It's bigger than we expected, though - roughly the size of a fatter bazooka, largely due to the coilgun components; as a result, it's fairly bulky for our troops. Batteries and grenades are inserted easily-enough. It costs 1 Oil and 2 Ore, but is Very Complex thanks to the difficulties of manufacturing the electronics and cooling system for the coilgun. The SynthOil batteries are luckily cheap, even if they are inefficient. Our military tells us that while this won't be particularly useful for many cases where conventional grenade launchers would be useful, they'll use it for opening volleys in ambushes if the opportunity arises.

Import: Private 1 1/2 Ton Truck
Looking at the trucks just sent over makes everyone in the Design Bureau question if they should have just taken a civilian car instead of importing what was basically an antique at this point, but it works. Hopefully.
At least it's Cheap, everyone supposes.

Quote
Privateer 1 1/2 Ton Truck: [L] Cannala's first truck, it's a cabover on an antiquated 3-cylinder, the transmission only has a forward and reverse setting. It's still better than horses, though. Provides 1 TC. [2 Ore, 2 Oil]

Spoiler: Designs (click to show/hide)

The Design Phase of 1959 has begun. This year's revision phase will be our last action before the offensive begins. Our generals expect to be meeting enemies at the Mountains and the Sea. Plan accordingly.

Not a great round. We really need to improve upon our super soldier program, but just in case we want to veer wildly in another direction.

Mobile Harvester
This eight-wheeled upsized transport truck comes equipped with a SynthOil battery and electric engine. It is also lightly armoured for safe use near the battlefield. Drills, mining equipment, and other useful extraction equipment are carried as standard, along with appropriate connections to power them using the harvester’s battery. A double hatch on the belly of the harvester can be opened to allow safe access to the area to be harvested and a winch lowered as necessary for the purpose of accessing holes dug straight down. It contains enough space to store at least a TC of material in a hopper for simple transfer to a truck.

Anti-Armor PetroChemical Cannon "Malign Intent"

THis cannon was developed imitating in accidental discovery in a physics lab built on top of a native burial ground (Which Promptly exploded with around 5 tons of explosive force when it was using petrochemicals to make progressively more powerful explosives). the Petrochemical LIQUID propelled shell is propelled slightly faster compared to a regular weapon, but it has the eerie effect of steering into  targets if given the choice between missing entirely or hitting a area with test subjects in the immediate area.  Our top scientists believe this to be the built in patriotic gusto that the shell has been imbued with by the high energy reaction along with the packet of ground organic material that was found in the detonated lab. Reproducing this material is simple, as it is closely mimicking a natives ritualistic suicide dust, but that is besides the point.  The cannon is specially designed to handle the shell it fires, and the shell is designed to handle the propulsion and "anomalous" effect it is given. Consequently, after around 3-4 rounds, the users of the weapon claim that the weapon is haunted. unknown mouths speaking in tongues is heard, blood dripping from the ceiling, and all sorts of other unpleasant affects are supposedly claimed, but none are found. The best action is to rotate gunnery officers after 5 rounds fired, for morale purposes. The officers are also recommended to have religious items on them at all times, and to never look down the barrel of the weapon under any circumstances after its immediate operation.

The production of the organic dust is a rather simple affair, albeit one that specifically requires "Sentient" flesh, which is eagerly acquired by deceased test subjects, and then properly operated upon using a refining process that could be properly described as a "Ritual" by the lesser minded, although it is really just a mixing of several volatile compounds with over half a dozen specialized plant reagents that is somewhat difficult to acquire.

Simply put, when the particulate matter is burnt, high energy and electromagnetic fields are detected, albiet weak in power. When the powder is administered to a live test subject that is promptly immolated, the  overall mass of the subject decreases  by around 12 grams more then normal. We believe there is some type of interaction between the resulting reaction of the metabolized material. THis also applies to rounds used by the Malign Intent and the subjects that were subjugated to the artillery strikes. there overall mass had been consumed more then what is expected by regular fire.

The current prevailing theory on why this happens is that some sort of previously undiscovered "energy field" has been found, and is being used by our ultra-high-energy petrochemical explosions to gain patriotic sentience and gusto towards Aratam forces, and genocidal hate towards enemy forces/civilians/test subjects who use the missing matter to power there own patriotic glee. Other crackpot theorists are claiming that we are infact, temporarily opening a gateway, a tiny gateway into another dimension, filled with entities filled uniquely with hatred, and rage towards all sentient life that use the missing matter to attempt to widen the "hellscape portal". This of course, was promptly thrown away, as such a impossible theory would never be real.

The weapon is designed to be put on either naval vessels, or as a towed weapon.

Design: Tinker Soldiers
Simply put, The Iron Legion was brute forcing the peripheral nervous system to become something it could never become.

To adequately fix this, the current nervous system of the treated subjects is delicately ripped out, and the failure tissue is replaced with strips of carbon, which is promptly treated with gold/Osmium Alloy-recombination chemicals, instead of lousy copper.

This has huge, massive effects on the subject, drastically easing the Iron Legions process of installing the augments, and their skin, which takes on a bronze sheen.

The end results are Soldiers, with a bronze colored Metal Skin, and a peripheral nervous system so totally new that the solders mind is "reset", instantly adapting to the new hardware, as the central nervous System (The Brain) is doused with impossible amounts of Spice which result in soldiers that are not the same as before. The individuals are then operated on while in Cryo-Stat Therapy, removing and adjusting the process with our top surgeons, resulting in the Perfect, immortal soldier. It is hopeful that in the future, a process by which a mind "template" can be put on the soldier in progress, resulting in the same, loyal soldier, Everywhere. Fighting.

Body Reinforcement Infusion Surgery ‘Abyss’
An advanced surgery only made possible by use of the CryoStat tank, removes, Metalises and reinserts every bone in the patient’s body. We have selected Titanium for use as an ideal metal for fusion. Extracting the skull requires us to cut it open and install a series of hooks and a screw and plate system for secure refastening after Metalization. Post-Metalization electrolysis can be used to further seal the injury if we anticipate no further need for brain access. This does increase the effective weight of the subject’s bones by roughly 1.3 times. In order to reduce the potential for reductions in mobility, we make use of adenosine triphosphate infusion to help stimulate growth of additional muscle mass. The resulting soldier is stronger and much more resilient to injury.

Ornithopter ‘Dragonfly’
With the aid of Metal Recombinators, we can produce a functional electrically powered wing that can operate reliably under the varied pressures and stresses caused by flight. The advantage of an ornithopter is low energy usage to maintain steady flight, allowing the Dragonfly to remain aloft for a day of constant flight without needing to refuel. Combined with maneuverability comparable to a helicopter including the capability to hover via wing control, this allows for a number of potential uses.
The Dragonfly is an unarmed double crewed aircraft designed for airlifting of vehicles over long distances. It does this via a lifting harness that uses Metalised rope. The power system uses a SynthOil battery to generate the electricity needed to activate the wings. The wings themselves use pistons to generate the flapping motion, with the much of the wing motion achieved using the structural design of the wings themselves. The wings are mounted above and behind the cockpit which combined with the elongated tail creates the dragonfly shape.

Design: Malign Intent
Very Hard: (1+2)-2 = 1: Utter Failure

The bad news is that the Malign Intent itself is a piece of nonfunctional scrap metal built by Spice-addled engineers. It turns out that when given the task to build a large-scale cannon and when secretly taking """safe""" amounts of Spice leads engineers to believe they've made a haunted cannon.
Said haunted cannon is, again, an unusable pile of scrap metal. But we can learn something from this.

Specifically, that maybe the former engineers weren't completely wrong. There's something ever-so-slightly off about the cannon. It's hard to explain, but some scientists theorize that the hallucinations and whatnot that manifest in subjects taking plain spice (such as the engineers that made the Malign Intent) may actually have some kernel of truth to them.
It's a crazy idea, but if it's true, we could be stumbling into something of immense power. We don't have much to build on if we were to try and capitalize on this in the (near) future, but at least we think we know where to start.

Hybrid Magnetic Kinetic Rifle "Osprey" HMKR-59:
The Osprey is an innovative new take on our gas-operated kinetic rifles that we have in storage since the world wars. We have learned our faults from the "Jumper" coil grenade launcher and the usage of an electric oil-powered battery to allow such a magnetic-based weapon to even perform properly. The main thing is that the gun is based off the "Pursuit" rifle but with a new weapon reconfiguration from it's barrel to its magazine. The primary main difference is that it utilizes the new electric oil-batteries from SynthOil that is inserted into one of the sides of the rifle that allows for the next part of magnetic coils around the barrel of the gun to propel bullets even faster and further compared to previously just gas-operated guns. It still utilizes gas-operated cartridges as it isn't solely focused on just being a magnetic assault rifle that would make it much more difficult to design and configure. In the simplest sense, it's just a gas-operated rifle that utilized SynthOil electric batteries and combing magnetic coils on the barrel of the gun to propel bullets faster and more powerfully.

The "Osprey" may seem like it would require too much finesse in engineering to work but it has some combined properties of other modern guns to be more useful for the Spice-fueled soldier on the battlefields. From a vertical grip, long-range optics, and laser sights on its barrel; also the laser sight would be powered by the SynthOil battery pack that is attached to the rifle. The advanced electronics that form both the magnetic barrel to the storage unit of a SynthOil also allow the rifle to be functional and usable on the battlefield, however would the electric charge runs low, the rifle will than switch back to "Kinetic" mode where it just normalizes back to gas-operation.

In function, a rifle that utilizes a hybrid of magnetic technologies to give its bullets more armor penetration and stopping power

Revision: Standard Armor
Derived from experiments in metallizing existing equipment, Standard Armor is essentially a metallized Standard Uniform boot, shaped like a vest. Heavy-duty metallized cloth sewn around metallized batting resists shrapnel, knives, and impacts, as well as some protection against small arms fire, while metallized rubber plates on the front and back of the torso deflect bullets almost entirely. A helmet, basically a metallized rubber bowl with interior padding, and a pair of metallized boots are standard issue along with the vest, completing our upgrade to the Standard Uniform.

The Osprey is the boring but practical option, even if it might have a weight problem. We are going to need to spend a number of turns advancing our variety of poorly performing ideas into something more effective and useful. We might as well start with a better gun.

Revision: Shard Cannon "Revulsion" HMKR-66

In the line of Hybrid Magnetic Rifles, The Revulsion is a infantry mounted heavy weapon, designed with  coils, specifically four carbon rods that has been recombinated with a high durability magnetic steel and then coiled, which is connected to the backpack electrical system, which turns the oil into electricity. This is different then other prototypes, as oil is instead poured into a gas tank, rather then using individual "batteries".

The Projectile itself is essentially a rocket attached to a magnetic discarding fairing. The rocket is propelled out of the Revulsion with the magnetic equipment, and once it is far away from the user, its rocket motor fires.

Compared to  the other viable design, HMKR-66 is a relatively fast firing anti-tank weapon,  which can hold multiple rockets and fire them off in bursts, as fast as the gas can be drained, the weapon can fire until it runs out of rockets, upon which it is refilled by a *clip* into an internal magazine, or until it runs out of gas. The back pack was made to reduce the wieght that a soldier would have to carry in his own hands when he has to fire the shoulder mounted weapon. The weapon is connected with a durable rubber coated copper cable, we aren't savages. It cannot fire the missile without electricity.

Revision: Hybrid Magnetic Kinetic Rifle "Osprey" HMKR-59
Normal: (4+4) = 8: Unexpected Boon

While this is based off of the heavily flawed Jumper, it benefits from the fact that we're more-or-less scaling everything down. The coil components will only assist firing. The SynthOil batteries only need to power this assist.
But what we did was something great. The HMKR-59 "Osprey" will be a weapon our soldiers are proud to wield.

It does what it set out to do perfectly: using coilgun components to increase the velocity of bullets. The gun's a bit bigger than the Pursuit, especially near the end of the barrel. The increase in bulk won't hurt how well our soldiers use it, luckily. A specially-shaped "hole" through the back of the gun (going straight through both sides) fits a single SynthOil battery, which has enough juice to power 10 powered shots. These shots won't compare to a theoretical entirely-coilgun powered weapon, but they're still notably better than conventionally-propelled munition of similar caliber. Powered shots are accurate up to Medium range (versus the mediocre unpowered accuracy at Medium range) and are better at armor piercing.
Don't expect powered shots to be effective against tanks, but they should be able to hold some degree of effectiveness against any modern infantry armor - even stuff that normal unpowered shots wouldn't pierce. Against unarmored foes, powered shots will simply be more lethal.

The SynthOil batteries don't help with logistics. Not because of its expense or anything of the sort, but rather because of its size and the additional strain it puts on keeping it in stocks. Our soldiers can only hold so many things before combat effectiveness starts getting hurt. So each soldier with an Osprey equipped will carry two SynthOil batteries total (one in the gun and one on the person) with them and will be instructed to conserve their powered shots.

The HMKR-59 'Osprey' is expected to cost 1 Ore and 1 Oil.
We originally estimated some degree of complexity in manufacturing the coilgun components - like with the Jumper - but our engineers are very happy to report that they've managed to completely eliminate the complexity problems with manufacturing coilguns at this level. Some of the solutions apply to parts used by both the Jumper and the Osprey, so the Jumper will now become Complex instead of Very Complex. But some of the solutions are unique to the Osprey (though porting them to the Jumper or any future coilgun would be beyond trivial).

Import: Spearhead-B
The last import arrives as scheduled. The Cannalan representative informs us that Cannala wishes everyone luck in the coming battle, and promises that Cannala will continue (indirectly) supporting Aratam in their just cause for battle. Whatever it is.

M1942 A-5B 'Spearhead-B' Air Superiority Fighter: Following Forenia's Thunderbird design, the Spearhead is an aluminum-built fighter with two turbojet engines. It features a rounded canopy, swept wings, pointy nose, and the engines are under each wing, but hug the body closely; the inlets are flush with the fuselage. A heavy Can Shredder sits in the nose. Two Morei turbojets burn kerosene and take some advantage of experiences of the Bull tank's turboshaft, it includes a water-cooling system (the shared radiator creates a third intake under the body). Despite carrying more weight, it's very nearly as fast as the Thunderbird, but it does have trouble recovering from stalls. On the other hand, when it's keeping good speed it can make impressive turns thanks to its hydraulic control system; the pilot can pull the relatively large control surfaces with ease. The Can Shredder can do serious damage to bombers from a safe distance. A hardpoint for 500lb bombs or missiles has been added under each wing. [4 Ore, 4 Oil]
The Spearhead-B is just barely Very Expensive with our resources.

Combat Phase 1960
Link to Combat Report (Core Thread)

Things are looking good for the Aratam military at the moment. The top brass are all satisfied with the Design Bureau's performance thus far.

The Mountains
We're quite surprised by our success in the mountains. But now's not the time to relax - our soldiers won't be able to continue if their damned ICE-missile artillery continues as it is. Their power armor - "Bear Armour" - is also something to worry about. Even though we can technically pierce the power armor, they're still vaguely close to the infantry equivalent of tanks. We only won because it seems like Mereth relied entirely on their power armor, with their infantry receiving nothing else from R&D other than it and the ICE Thrower designed for it.

The Sea
This one is also surprising - that Mereth never imported or designed a carrier.

While our advantage is still clear, we should be on the watch for attempts by Mereth to change the status quo. They have a lot of apparent (and likely fairly easy) options to pursue to change the situation at sea.

You should really look to the wilderness for your stealth ideas, it has been doing it much longer than you have after all. Take squids for example, that ink trick works pretty well, and in water too! So you just sneak into the dam upsteam, dump several megatons of distressed squid into it, then break the dam. Boom, you suddenly have enough water-proof stealth for a whole city!
