Dancing and different cultures
« on: June 06, 2017, 12:17:56 pm »

I've had forts where every other migrant who showed up had military skills of some kind.  My current one was founded by artists.  When my fort was started I had visions of a waterfall through hallways, a grand tavern, a strong military, and ballistas set up to destroy intruders.  My dwarves showed up with the skills I had given them, and more - they were all better poets and dancers than they were anything else.  And so, when the fort was new, it was not surprising that they started dancing.  A lot.

Then later, when I wanted them to, they were too busy.  It took me three tries and a long time on their part before I could get them to do the whole dance again and catch it on video, this time in Armok Vision.

So far as I can tell they are perfectly doing the randomly generated dance exactly the way it is described.  This game is amazing.

Thanks!  It really took a lot to get them to dance again.  It made me happy every time I saw them doing it.

Lovely. I haven't seen a group dance yet. Please post the in-game description of the dance.

That's a great idea.  I'd be happy to.  Let me find it in my screenshots or get one.

Here you go.  It's so detailed you could re create this dance in the real world if you wanted to.

The Flower of Sheens is a performance partner piece.  I think it is not only meant to be danced, but meant to be watched.

This morning I watched all the way through Siege 11, all four parts. That was funny. All those gobs got stunned in the wildlife trap and your three squads just stopped the ones who weren't caged cold. Good work!

Only quibble is that you're not using Armok Vision as much as I'd like, but I understand the computer issues are probably involved. I played with AV this morning myself, just to see the current version in action.

Good work on the latest vid. I appreciated that little bit of Armok Vision in action.

I'd have said something on Youtube directly, but I don't want to create a channel to comment.

Yeah unfortunately I don't have the best computer, and it takes a while to fire up Armok Vision every time I run it.  To do the dancing video I turned down the graphics to make it run faster.  If I'm just showing off a still image I turn them up a bit.  As I got further into making my videos I got better at switching back and forth, so I think the trend is I use more and more Armok Vision as my videos go on.  I think that last one you're talking about is the first time I tried to show combat in it.

The reason I don't use it during the combat scenes is currently it doesn't render bolts in flight or ballistas.  You wouldn't know if the crossbow team was firing until they killed something, and they spend a lot of time softening up the goblins for everyone else.

Yeah, I figured that bolt issue was one of the reasons. Us Tropers (Members of TVTropes.com) are building up minor interest in doing another succession fort after I showed the others Armok Vision, but it's slow going. And I'm on the fence about doing it just yet, since next version is, in relative terms, right around the corner and it promises to add so much more to roleplay. On the other hand, it's going to be a long time before it settles back down enough for another Vision update we can use, so if we're going to do it with AV we need to do it with this version or sit on it for a while.

Anyway, looking forward to your next vids.

PS, when she first heard your vids, my mom asked "Is that Jeffrey Dean Morgan?" Great voice, man.

Thanks Dunamisdeos.

McVoyager I wouldn't wait for a version to do things there will always be another version coming along.  I've always found the idea of succession forts interesting but I'm way too busy to do one.  I like hearing about them though.

Here's the first TVT one I remember: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13372995990A50780100&page=1 Waterburned.

The sequel, Beigeknife: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13444786850A23026700&page=1#1

And the third I remember, Jawmetal: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/posts.php?discussion=13691561690A35746300&page=1

The two I started just kind of fell apart. One of them really quick. We just . . . stopped. We're looking forward to going at it again, but we're working out a mod set-up to make it crazy.
