You go ahead and inform Kalja that her next mission, should she choose to accept it, will have her heading out to the Free Isles to find the secret lost city-state of Lethop and retrieve the infamous Book of Hez-Shalhoub from wherever its author may have hid it.

She rather understandably blanches at the prospect. Of course, refusal isn't really an option. You have her off within the week with a cadre of operatives, armed with the information in your possession and the knowledge that she is to come with results or come not at all.

That done, you decide to celebrate New Year's Eve in peace.

256 S.I., Spring

The winter, hardly peak spying season at the best of times, has passed uneventfully, and along with spring comes a brand new espionage year! And that means your second annual report, which the secretary has placed on your table for your inspection and approval!

Public Mood: 5
Operating Funds: 4
Available Agents: 2 (1 contingent sent to Lethop)
Royal Trust: 5

It's been a very good year, all things considered, the Patriarch's mollification having soothed the populace, the Queen being in high spirits with your tangible progress on finding the Book and even your finances looking solidly in the black. Might be a good time to ratchet up spending!

A) Start stocking a library with increasingly exotic tomes to assist in matters arcane - you suspect the Queen's desires will only grow stranger with time.
B) Consider building some kind of danger room for your personal amusement and possibly the education of whoever you throw in there.
C) Invest in holding areas to keep persons of interest in far away from anybody who could hear them scream.
D) Keep hold of the funds for now, you expect the honeymoon of this fresh new Kingdom is going to end any time now.

Both C and A might help us directly. But if the queen ask for more magic stuff we might ask extra funds. changed my vote to A

A Having knowledge of the arcane could be helpful... especially when we want to get rid of that heathen Vizier.

You dispatch the secretary to start expanding your collection of sinister scrolls and baleful booklets filled with forbidden secrets! The secretary gives you a 'why me' look for a second, but then sighs and heads out to make some appropriate arrangements with your web of contacts.

You then sit back and resume reading some of your favorite passages in the teachings of the Stormrider. Swinging hammers and shattering skulls, all that a man of simple tastes needs.

256 S.I., Early Summer

The city is buzzing with rumors as a richly appointed delegation arrived the other night, seemingly from nowhere at all - men and women from Kudu-Kai on living, breathing ships, utterly foreign to these shores. They appear to have requested an audience with the Queen, which she has yet to grant - until then they wait patiently in the harbor, scarcely stepping off their boat except to occasionally procure more feed for it.

You have eyes on the ship, but as of yet they do not appear to be making any moves. You suspect you may need to-

Kalja steps into your office, looking slightly out of breath. Seems she got here as soon as she was able - you clap your hands together! Kalja! How was Lethop?

She breathes for a second. Well, she says, the book wasn't to be found there, she is sad to say. She did talk to that Yugrom of Kudu fellow, however, and he had quite a bit to say for himself.

Really, you lean in toward her skeptically.

Yes, she continues, seems like he didn't really need that book after a certain point and he said he, er, chucked it somewhere. Specifically, he chucked it into another plane of existence. "So's not to keep bloody tripping over the damn thing all the time" were his exact words if she recalls correctly.

Another plane of existence? How the hell are you supposed to get it, then?

Kalja shrugs. She didn't have a lot of time to question him, truth be told, but the way he went on she got the impression stepping between planes is something he doesn't give much thought. He did say he last remembers putting the book in the Hell of Ten Thousand Needles. Oh, and there's a phrase you need to use if you want to handle it safely, he said it gets a little ornery otherwise. She relates the phrase, which to you is a jumble of nonsense words.

Right then, you say. And the other agents?

Sadly possessed by demons, she shakes her head, along with the pirate crew she brought for muscle. Lethop is... not a friendly place for living things.

A) Well, Kalja, you know what that means - to the Hell of Ten Thousand Needles with you!
B) Exceptionally done! Rest for now - when you've recuperated you'll be shown to your new duties as lieutenant!
C) A respectable enough performance, but the large number of casualties isn't exactly heartening. Keep at it, you're sure she'll make lieutenant someday!

Kalja beams as you make her lieutenant on the spot - thank you, sir! She is honored by your consideration! There's a spring in her step as she bows out of your office gratefully.

Anyway, this delegation business - they have stated that they speak for a prince you haven't heard of, and appear to want something from the Queen, but as far as you know they haven't specified what that is, seemingly saving it for the ears of the Queen herself, who in turn doesn't seem very willing to grant an audience to somebody without clear and obvious credentials.

Complicating matters further is the fact that these folk from Kudu-Kai are from the other side of the Ruined Sea, the blasted and flooded hellscape once known as the Imperial Heartlands, and information about Kudu-Kai's particular affairs is very sparse at the best of times. This delegation has come from very far away indeed.

A) Intensify surveillance and try to figure out what it is they want from the Queen.
B) Advise the Queen to permit an audience so that they can state their motives plainly.
C) Task Kalja with investigating these strangers in a strange land.
