Sam waited until the party was safely out of earshot of the guards.

: "Oh, I hope we don't end up staying more than a week. This place is filthy."

The ash had already begun to settle in Roux's vivid red hair. She looked at the mountain as it slowly wept black smoke

Brock brushed off a nearby wall, feeling the ash in his hands, before in turn wiping the ash off on his pants.

"Not like camp is much cleaner anyway.  Rather have ash every day than sand once..."

Farra was taking in whatever sights she could, though the ash did no such favours, and it nearly got in her eyes a couple times. Instead, she just stuck to looking at the streets and brushing the ash off her hair.

When Brock made his comment about sand, she did cast a glance towards him... Sure, if she had just met him and that was the first thing he had said, then he could attribute it to just not liking walking around in the desert, but... What did he even have against her country?

She decided to leave that point alone and instead talk to Roux, not risking a punch to the face or an axe down her skull.

"They have to have one laid out nearly perfectly, I'd think. Still, I wonder how long it would take to rebuild, if they could even do it here at all."

"You get used to it, eventually.  More or less.  Though if we're fortunate, we won't be here anywhere near long enough for that."

"Now, let me think...  Which way was it to the Molten Rock?  I know I've been by there before."

"Not for a while, I'm reckonin'. All th' ash would kill all the plants an' things, yeah? They wouldn't 'ave anythin' to eat."
She paused and looked again towards the distant peak.
"Mebbe they're all just 'opin' it don't go off."

Bertholt looks up suddenly, as if jolted out of deep thought.
"You know, as a young boy, I used to hear stories about this place from travellers who would pass by our shop. I hear Fang is as well known for its hot springs as it is for its wares. Perhaps if we have some time, we might partake of it. It might take our mind off recent events."

: "Hot spring...? You mean like summer? Yeah I guess with the volcano and all the metalworking it probably gets pretty warm here."

The poor bard was thinking of seasons.

"Warm springs. Like public baths, only natural. I can imagine it must be relaxing up here near a volcano; likelihood is, the natural springs here would be warmed by the heat of the mountain. I'd be surprised if none exist here; I'm no stranger to money-making schemes and something like that, especially in the dead of winter, would make much money."

Kaldach seemed to be staring at the peaks of the volcano ever since it came into view. Despite all the ash and soot in the air, he seemed to glare at it consistently, as if completely distracted from everything else. His mouth slanted, something seemed to be on his mind, his face only scrunched further as if he himself was trying to figure out what.

As the group passed the gatekeepers and talks began on what to do next, the mercenary shook himself out of his reverie, addressing Bertholt.
: "Sounds like a scheme, all right. We shouldn't be tossing money around like it's nothing."

"You're probably right. Still, it would have been nice to forget about the war for a second, no? Take our minds off of it. It will do us no good to worry about it constantly."

"Well, I must have misspoke. These baths would often have several rooms, rented out to a party for a while. They're public in the sense that they're available for anyone to rent. Although public baths in that other sense existed back in my home city; bathing in one's own home is a privilege few have."

Shaking his head at the conversation around springs, Kaldach turned his attention to Martyn.
: "Anyway, how confident are you that you'll catch these Guilds' ears? We don't have much to twist their arms with, last I checked."

Roux scratched her nose.
"Huh. In Chilcinne we just used a river or summin'. Got bloody cold durin' th' winter, an' yer 'ad to keep an eye out 'case someone was tryin' to ambush yer. 'Ad to drown a man once. 'Arder than yer'd think."
