((They've lasted this long. They probably can last until our next visit. Or until our successors really need to find something. It's probably also easier to not be too greedy when we just don't have the space. I was worried we mine it at all, at first, but now I'm more concerned about hernias.))

I meant like moving to one of the other tunnels we already found and heading down one, but whatever.

Well, I pushed you in that direction at the end just in case, and figured you might do a look around the known areas first particularly if you failed a tracking check and were getting frustrated.  This way, all involved can see what you're doing and make a decision.

. . . Which seems to be happening!  The vote is "go North."  Which I try to make sound ominous, but this is text, so whatever.

The newly-mined goodies can be distributed between Tohil (randomgenericusername) and Bob (magmaholic), so that's set.

The only lingering question seems to be Gary (Coolrune206), who hasn't explicitly said anything about muttering and frothing, but can be assumed to approach that state if the rolls continue to give bad results.  Or possibly any results.  If he isn't satisfied, can I presume that someone will guide him gently by the elbow?  If he wants to keep near wheelbarrows in case of other useful ingredients ("useful"), I can imagine him tagging along regardless.

Right, it's getting late.  I'll be back another time with the update.  Turns out there was some difficulty with the map and I had to do a bunch of fiddling.

I'm also bumping into some questions of longterm planning, but that's obviously my problem and not yours.

But when it comes to "time" and "planning," upcoming sociocultural events mean I'll probably be slow on the updates for a reasonable period.  Just as, I might deduce, people will be slow on the actions.  So it's good that we're between big game scenes.

I almost forgot that I wanted to ask some stuff.
Can we learn to communicate with the ugly mugs/hoarding wastrels?
Is wearing multiple armor an effective way to negate damage or we can only have 1 piece of protective gear per layer (1 robe, 1 mail, 1 plate armor)?
Can wheelbarrows break?
Can we dig directly down? If we can, is there a bottom or limit?
What would happen if someone reached the surface and returned to civilization?

. . . Dude.  I mean, filter those questions into categories: game mechanics I'd actually address, and gameworld stuff there's no way I'd spoil for idle questioning!

Communication?  Ahem.

For armor, I've been assuming people would layer anything they could, and practicality limits that.  It would be physically impractical to wear two layers of chain mail, but of course you'd always wear a tunic under it, and the tunics can be tough armor all by themselves, so you get the bonus from both items.  This gets modified when new stuff shows up, specifically the amnesiac robe: someone could reasonably wear it over the top.  You'll notice, though, that it gives a special effect and doesn't give you super-duper-layered-defense or anything: after that last discussion, you know how I'm trying to avoid running out of "roll space" with all the bonuses and penalties.

I presume wheelbarrows can break, but I'm being nice and not bothering until the players (or hostile forces) do something to risk it.

Sure you can travel up and down.  Look at the maps: there are slopes.  Your character hasn't encountered any yet, but they're there.

But if you think you're getting back to the surface anytime soon, why not try?  Let me know how it turns out.  You've never heard of anybody returning from exile, but surely that doesn't mean anything.

Previous -- Next

Okay, done.  As I said, I'm going to be variably-occupied for awhile.  But writing is fun, so if I have time for this particular fun then of course I'll update you.  I hope that if you people have plans at this time of year, then you enjoy those as well!

First a few rolls.  And I have removed rock hydra paralysis from all characters as time will pass and the effect is temporary.

It looks like the newly-doubled group is ready to move out!  Mostly.  A few chunks of rock need to get sorted, Dwain is lagging behind a bit, and Gary is still "working."

But a little shale dust sure does wonders, doesn't it?  It's like a paste: blood and brains and who-knows-what, thickened with the starch of the earth!  Or maybe that's just the blood doing its natural drying-and-sticking-to-stuff deal.  Either way, you get the top part of that rock hydra's extracted skull to fuse to the top of the hood, making . . . well, it's not big enough to be a proper helmet for someone of human size, but it's easily a "skull cap."  (Ha ha, the whimsy!)

You remove your mining helmet and don your improvised skull cap with pride.  Your vertebrae can just get used to that hefty weight.  It is a small price to pay for achieving your goal!  Which was what exactly?

Anyway, Dustan is in a hurry to leave, with John right behind.  Alyssa has already started rolling a wheelbarrow.  Somewhere, in the north, you hear a single distant boom; this may be the right direction!  I mean, if you're into booming.

John, Alyssa, and Bob start complaining of headaches as you go, but soon everybody gets over it.  Including Dwain, who has grabbed the other wheelbarrow since somebody needs to be responsible here.

You encounter no one on the journey, and the newcomers are to learn that these tunnels are long.  The route northward runs deep in the shale, twisting and turning, and hours pass by as you go.  You're sure that the sun would be setting, if only you could see it . . .

Day 15, Evening

You slow your pace when the tunnel opens again and you face a wall of broad stalagmites in the middle of a larger chamber.  The ceiling has closed overhead, and no longer can you see any light but your lanterns, nor breathe any air but that of the depths.

"Time to explore. And probably also set up camp, we could use the rest."

Take the wheelbarrow to the small chamber west of where we are.

Similarly park my wheelbarrow, and might as well have a look up the western north-blackness, if nobody else is doing that. Hand signal to someone(s) behind me (Tohil, Louis and/or Gary) to have a look up the other way. I've no idea if I'll get understood, but it'll possibly be a learning experience for us all.  ;)

He he, awesome.

"Time to explore. And probably also set up camp, we could use the rest."

Perhaps, but I try to hold camping/resting to a regular cycle in an effort to keep things moving.  Finish the evening time period (say, by clearing the area and then leaving), I advance time to go overnight, and you camp on the way to your next destination.  I'd rather discourage sitting still unless you're doing something clearly productive like mining the slow way.

Back tomorrow!  And then I'll start being very busy.
