Gary continues crafting furiously. Any components that are damaged can be replaced using the other materials in the cart.

He he he.  Would you like me to choose materials at random?  Some objects would be more likely than others, of course.  It might almost be (gasp!) logical for you to mold your "new helmet" around one of those cultist hoods.  (Obviously for convenience, not because you need it for any practical reason.  Obviously.)

then try to remove the bone parts

I'll gladly narrate, but I should be clear from the start that the thing is, in its majority, a bone.  Just so there's no confusion.

However, we do get a direct conversion from splitter wand cost to ore value, so with what we know [etc.]

To help with calculation, you may observe I've used three graphics for chunks of ore; tiles with 1, 2, or 3 chunks.  From the perspective of the exiles, it's random just how many you get from a single tile of stone, but on average that means you should expect 2.  Therefore, double an ore's value when you compare it to the expense of a splitter wand.

And since that's a question of "on average," of course, you're more likely to turn a profit if you use more than one splitter wand per mining excursion.

(If at some point you don't like the conversion rate, remember you can always get the team to spend a day mining the slow way.  You might run the risk of "wandering monsters," but so what?  More money!)

Now I could use a reply from Louis (dustywayfarer), unless I am to presume that said player is passing on turns for awhile.

Use any materials at random! And, while you're at it, why not just roll to see if Gary is practical enough to be logical. My guess is no.

Louis hands Alyssa as many wands as she needs, then fills each waterskin from the first EDIT: second group's wheelbarrow. Smelling the putrifying mass buried there, Louis gingerly takes it and throws it far out over the water.

Gary, Bob, and Tohil have plenty of space. I'm sure nothing bad would happen if we used some of it. . .

I'm liking these actions.

first EDIT: second group's wheelbarrow

Yeah, I've been wondering if it's more confusing to label it that way than it's worth.  Does anybody care "whose wheelbarrow" it is?  After all, the "second group" is completely gone from the game now.  If it would be simpler, I'll just relabel them to "the first wheelbarrow" and so on.

Now I'll proceed with the update-writing until I have something good for you.

Previous -- Next

Ah, so much character revealed!  So long as the plot keeps moving, it's great fun writing for deviations, like . . .

Spoiler: Logic?  From Gary? (click to show/hide)

Gary grabs at materials close at hand and comes up with one of those leather hoods from the wheelbarrow.  Wait . . . that's almost logical.  Quickly you set to using it as a mold or frame for your crafting.  But after five or ten minutes of effort, it becomes clear it's not working!  You can't magically combine materials that don't melt or mix.

Unless . . . hmm, you recall watching Dustan use thread to sew up injuries.  Could thread be used for a task involving attaching one squishy object to another??

While Gary considers his next move in construction, Tohil is at work in deconstruction.  You've already taken a look at the colored rock: you're no mineralogist, but this has got to be something good you can sell to a metalsmith.  Now, about the splitter wand itself.  Alyssa has asked to use a few, so you hand over three and then get out one for yourself.  Plus a whittlin' knife.

Spoiler: Science! (click to show/hide)

These "splitter wands" appear to be, for the most part, bones.  Like turkey thigh bones.  One end has been sharpened to a point, and the only other identifying feature is a streak of blue down the middle.  What's up with that?

Using your new iron dagger, you begin etching the wand, looking for cracks or loose features.  It seems like this blueness is a material applied to the surface--extremely thin, gold-leaf-level thin.  But you can't flake it off.  So you angle the blade into the bone at one side and try to scrape or shave it smoothly off.  And a swish . . . !

. . . What was that?  Was that a spark?  You're not sure you saw a spark, but the blue material is gone.  Just gone.  Where did the bit you scraped off go?  You're holding nothing but a whittled bone.  Come to think of it, there are some underground animal bones in a backpack in the wheelbarrow, and they look pretty much like this except for the damaged bits.

Bob comes over to start on another engraving, bumps into Dwain, moves some coal around, and gets to work drafting a new engraving via graphite.  Bob is reasonably confident in the drafting process.  Dwain is picking up a headache.

Alyssa induces BOOM!, BOOM!, and BOOM!

Oh, oops, you were standing right next to the water when you did that.  Ha ha.  So the dripwater pool expanded a little, and some of the orange ore fell into the water.  Ha ha.  But there's sure a lot of the stuff!

Dustan, at this point, is scouring the caves for clues.

Spoiler: Tracking (click to show/hide)

You creep along the edge of the watery eastern area, looking for paths or crevices.  You loop through the northern cavern--with, by this point, John in tow for some reason.  It takes you awhile even to realize that you're just retracing your own steps and you don't find anything new.  It should be impossible for the enemy to have gotten through the walls you exiles just blasted open, but you cross through to the southwest anyway in your frustrated quest to get back lost goods like your wheelbarrow.  Argh, wheelbarrows; why don't these new exiles at least have their own?  Isn't that standard operating procedure?!

Louis, meanwhile, is stocking up that wheelbarrow with water, and is disconcerted to see a horrifying mass of rotten and unidentified meat.  In a backpack.  You glance left and right before gingerly scooping it up and tossing it into the water (well after getting the drinking supply you need, of course).  The only person to notice you doing it is Dwain, who seems to be coming over into the fresh air to clear his head.

Now, as to the carving: Bob (magmaholic), I didn't put a third art tile on the map this time, under the excuse that you're working on the draft on parchment.

Spoiler: More explanation (click to show/hide)

Gary refuses to be more logical and use thread. Instead, he decides to grab some stone dust from the splitter wand and put it into the areas that need to be joined. After all, the stone was split unnaturally by magic, so it must have a magical counter-force to go back together! Or something. Gary doesn't really know what he's thinking about.

"That was quite a bit more stone then I was expecting. At any rate, is there any particular reason why we're staying here? I believe the north tunnel should take us where we want to go."

Get ready to start hauling one of the wheelbarrows to the north exit.

I meant like moving to one of the other tunnels we already found and heading down one, but whatever.

"Are we done here? There's exits to choose from, and staying here to play around isn't going to help." To the newbugs..."As unwelcoming as the local civilisation down here can be, I think we at least ought to show you the 'delights' of the place, if we can. If we're lucky, we'll gain more than we than lose on the way there, but currently I'm mostly hoping for marginally less excitement than either of those options."

To the oldbugs present, in a quieter voice, unintentionally 'conspiratorially sounding' whilst just trying not to sound too lost and worry anyone: "...so, which way? I found this north-facing track, which might mirror our outward journey, if our will is enough to make it so. But if you have another track in mind, please share..."

Grab 4 of the orange rocks and put them on my backpack. Help move the remaining ones out of the water, adding one of the rocks into my backpack and leaving me with a total of 5 rocks.

Louis walks over to Bob and plops down against the wall nearby. After watching for a minute or two, he decides to criticize a bit.

I'm ready to go; someone lead the way.
