That's weird, as a civic duty you should be paid by your company, like a sick leave. Not saying a sick leave is civic duty. But both are things beyond your control so your work should still pay you. I guess public workers are free of this hook?

This is the US, where paid leave or anything else that undermines our current state of corporate slavery is decried as "socialism" so...

Nope. Public sector folks are as on the hook as anyone, barring maybe having better connections to schmooze out of getting called or figure out what to say to get filtered out. Some companies will keep paying you through jury duty, but it's very far from ubiquitous.

... also yeah, I'm public sector, and cause I'm part time I don't have sick leave, so hahaha. Lots of part timers/flexible schedule folks don't, stateside, or benefits in general for that matter. Most they get is maybe more leeway in not getting fired if they miss a day here and there.

I find it odd that they didn't sequester the jury for this. It's a high profile case, people have died, there's tons of media and press around it. Strange.

So there's been another attempt of jury intimidation. Allegedly, a producer from MSNBC was trying to follow the jury bus.

MSNBC is now banned from the courthouse.

What do you mean “another”?

According to the local NPR station, it was a freelancer, not a producer.

Men Sober Not Because Canada?
I remember the jokes when Micro(S)oft Networks partnered with the National Broadcasting Corporation to end up with that particular VETLA...

It was the meteoric (sic!) rise of the burgeoning digital platform meeting the needs of another company to divest itself of the more traditional broadcasting platform.

(I don't think MS are involved in it any more. They've got better things to do, probably.)

There was an earlier attempt when a photographer tried to photograph the jury outside the courthouse.

As for the producer, I was going by what the judge said.

Which would mean the judge was just wrong, apparently. Nothing seems to confirm that bit, though for some ungodly reason a number of reporting venues are using the wording. Freelancer is the most anyone that might actually have grounds to know seems to be saying.

How is that intimidation? Sounds more like freedom of press, as is normal in a healthy democracy. Unless said reporter actually threatened to harm them or reveal their home adress or somesuch.

It's revealing their identities. A photo would present a constant threat of getting doxxed, which unduly influences the jury.

Oh, okay. That makes sense. I didn't realize jurors were anonymous.

Not always but in circumstances like this there are, luckily, provisions to allow them to remain anonymous. I suppose we will see how effective those provisions are. Hopefully, very.

I think they can always choose to remain anonymous, though? I've not ever had to serve jury duty so I'm not sure.

What worries me is that at least one of the jurors has probably heard about how the jurors in the Chauvin case had their names released by the court. That was Minnesota, sure, but I wouldn't rule it out in Wisconsin.

EDIT: Another day of deliberation...

Strangely, the judge is letting one of the jurors take the jury instructions home. Totally not going to do independent research. Totally not a holdout.

Word on the street is that this is allegedly the foreman, and allegedly a Karen.

EDIT2: On day 4 of deliberations, NYTimes reporting the jurors are starting to feel the pressure from all the media coverage and crowd outside the courthouse.

Quote
Jurors have entered the Kenosha courthouse for the fourth day of deliberations, after discussing the case for 23 hours over the previous three days. As jurors entered, several of them thanked sheriff’s deputies for putting up a folding screen that blocked them from public view. “It helps calm my nerves,” one woman said. Another woman could be heard saying the “media coverage is insane,” and a man said he woke up at 3:30 a.m. and couldn’t fall back asleep until 5 a.m.

EDIT3: Verdict is in:

Not Guilty on all counts!
