Fact is, a few % of America’s population control over half the wealth. Compare the numbers and you’ll realise how naive the Wallstreetbets movement is. It’s likely Reddit simply didn’t want to be liable when the countless users, buying into the movement in good faith, inevitably got severely burned.

I feel like it got a lot more done than say, Occupy Wallstreet ever could do.

Hahah I'm not even going to read the article, the headline is funny enough:

A couple hedge funds got cratered but others walked away with billions, and hedge funds are a pretty minor part of the finance industry.  For most of the industry it was a blip on the radar.  Aside from making the fact that the house always wins and you don't get shit very materially real for some people, it did nothing.

It got a lot of people more informed over how the stock market doesn't does work, probably most people didn't even know shorting existed as an investment tool until the news started talking about reddit memes.  You need to get people well informed if you want them to question the status quo, and sometimes that means forcing the casino to rig the game even more blatantly.

Just because Wall St didn't burn to ashes yesterday doesn't mean you did nothing.

Ask any murdered environmentalist or civil rights advocate that tried to stop <insert major oil company name here> a pipeline from being built in <insert third world country of choice here>

True, I was thinking more cyperpunk-style corporate warfare but I guess we've already been in the future.

We’ll have to wait until the dust settles to see whether any lasting impact is made. If anything, that impact might just be more regulation/policing of stock pumpers to protect retail investors from getting caught up in high-risk hype trades, which probably isn’t the impact you’re looking for.

There is some macabre humour in the kamikaze attack on hedge funds, but at the end of the day there are many, many of them out there, and some contrarian fund will end up collecting most of the winnings. The little guy loses either way.

To address the earlier comment from McTraveller about taxing trading income at a higher rate: it’s called capital gains tax, and it is in fact taxed at a lower rate, ostensibly to “correct” for inflation. To prevent overtaxation, it tends to be over corrected (think, 50%). Simply abolishing this tax discount would be a huge move in the right direction. I’d also be in favour of a tax surcharge on all passive income, but honestly, I’d take even a small reduction in the capital gains discount as a win.

Aside: professional traders typically aren’t eligible for capital gains discounts as they don’t hold shares for the prescribed length of time to be eligible. So they actually do pay the higher (normal) tax rate. Tax reform could improve things here too, but honestly just closing loopholes and raising rates in higher brackets would go a very, very long way.

Dunno how common it's been for the financial or tech markets in recent years (overt violence is more direct resource extraction groups shtick), but corps offing people through various means is a thing older than living memory, heh.
Looooool reminds me of the square mile suicides, like the dude who hung himself off one of the bridges over Thames, the dude who threw himself down a flight of stairs and out a window, and the dude who did himself in with two dozen shots from a nailgun. All really, really suspicious "suicides" from people who had their hands in very large pies

What about the guy that shot himself then folded himself into a locked suitcase?

Listen, some magicians just want to go out with some mystique.

Chances of Trump being retroactively removed from office? 0%. Chances that the trial will be more entertaining than actual TV? 100%.

Didn't he also have links to MI5 and alleged seedy shit?

It all makes sense then. Major part of MI5 training is about locking yourself in a suitcase after being shot.

Most of our assassinations here are done at corporate request. Like the pacifist anti-logging people whose bomb (depsite having no history with explosives) plot failed when it blew up in their car, and the FBI response time was measured in seconds. Or, as you said, the very many murders of protestors or other people standing in the way of pipelines here.

I have been listening to the impeachment and the dems are describing all of the build-up preparations taken for Jan 6th... I keep recalling the WWWF video of Trump beating up different "people" at the ring-side. WWWF was new to me then. It was an unexpected display of dominance through violence and I still recall the chemicals hitting my bloodstream. Trump --> If your stage-drama works once, do it again, but bigger!

After watching some videos from the impeachment session, I cannot help feeling a lot of respect for the police force for having so much control and self restraint not to open fire on the crowd even when fearing for their life.

That was one helluva scary and threatening situation they were in.
