Here's a blast from Ameripol past: A MSH Gallup poll post!

First, a rather dramatic trend shift - some Americans are finally not so unshakably bootlicking as to rate themselves as extremely proud to be Americans, by which I means that only 60% say they're extremely or very proud as compared to the previous high of 90%. This decline largely took place among women, racial minorities, and 18-to-29. Notably, nobody increased. Even Republicans stayed static at around 70%. Only 10% of Americans say they aren't proud of their nationality at all. It's a start, I guess.

Second, it's my old flame, the Gallup Moral Acceptability poll! I've posted the previous incarnations of this before, in 2014 and then in 2017. I'll include those numbers here per year in order to see changes, so the order will be '14, '17, and then '20 with the change between them in parentheses.

Percentage saying the following are morally acceptable:

Birth Control: 90%, 91%, 90% (+0%)
Alcohol Use: - , -, 86% (-)
Divorce: 69%, 73%, 77% (+8%)
Sex, Unmarried: 66%, 69%, 72% (+6%)
Gambling: -, 65%, 71% (+6%)
Marijuana Use: -, -, 70% (+0%)
Sex, Gay: 58%, 63%, 66% (+8%)
Children Outside Of Marriage: 58%, 62%, 66% (+8%)
Embryonic Stem Cell Research: 65%, 61%, 66% (+1%)
Death Penalty: 60%, 58%, 54% (-6%)
Doctor-Assisted Suicide: 52%, 57%, 51% (-1%)
Animal Fur Clothing: 58%, 57%, 54% (-4%)
Animal Medical Testing: -, 51%, 56% (+5%)
Abortion: 42%, 43%, 44% (+2%)
Sex, Between Teenagers: 30%, 36%, 38% (+8%)
Pornography: 33%, 36%, 36% (+3%)
Cloning Animals: 34%, 32%, 34% (+0%)
Suicide: 19%, 18%, 18% (-1%)
Polygamy: 14%, 17%, 20% (+6%)
Cloning Humans: 13%, 14%, 12% (-1%)
Extramarital Affairs: 7%, 9%, 9% (+2%)

As one might expect from the beating the religious right has been taking over the past decade, sexual and marriage issues other than abortion have seen strong increases in acceptability, even including the more contentious issue of sex between teenagers, and with the exception of abortion. And the beatings will surely continue.

As the main article points out, moral support for the death penalty has reached a new low. Acceptability of fur clothing and medical testing on animals have swapped. Gambling is more accepted now, possibly due to the increase in video poker, sports betting, and lotto card addiction.

The increase in acceptance of polygamy is the real standout, given how low it was starting from. I attribute this to the increase in polyamorous relationships and communities since 2014. This may also be why a couple percent more agree with extramarital affairs, depending on their interpretation of the question since there is no direct polyamory question. It seems the rhetorical fears of the mid-2000s anti-ssm politicos may yet come to pass...

Abortion remains as slow rolling as ever, though it is the most divided by far with a difference of 52% acceptance between libs and conservatives. The least divided issue is animal medical testing, with only a 4% difference.

These colors are giving me LCS flashbacks. Have you been hacking the opinion polls and stealing credit cards?

Polygamy is definitely the one I didn't expect there. Probably due to polyamory becoming more widespread as you said.

Eh, there's probably some nuance there the poll misses. Even some folks pretty supportive of porn as a concept are pretty leery about the state of the industry in reality. It's possible some of the antipathy is conditional based on, well, the conditions involved.

E: Also it's down that far 'cause conservatives claim it's acceptable at about the same rate they do abortion. There may be some hypocrisy involved in the responses :P

E2: Though I'd be kinda' curious what definition of pornography the poll was using, if it defined it at all. If it's leaving out written smut the conservative side of things becomes maybe somewhat less hypocritical. If it's not, there's a lot of little old ladies that were lying in the poll :V

Ah yeah - if they asked me if I agree with overall production of pornography, I'd say it's messed up. (Working conditions, normalization of problematic fetishes, etc)

The sex between teenagers acceptance is surprisingly low.  Apparently it's viewed as worse than the death penalty.

Over here it is considered quite normal, and a healthy part of growing up, that teenagers have sex with each other.
My guess is acceptance would be somewhere around 80%.
Note that we have waaaay less teenage pregnancies than the US does.  I guess being open about it and telling our kids to do it safe (and giving them condoms) does help there.

if you can be alone in a voting booth, I don't see any reasonable reason for which you shouldn't be in company in bed.

(I don't mind people doing stuff earlier either, but 18 and above is a particularly puzzling contrast. I am forced to believe that people who answered that were thinking more like 14 or 15)

Well, that's what I meant too.  I wasn't even thinking about the 18+ group.
It's reasonably normal here for kids to start experimenting with sex around age 15 (and quite a few start younger).
Age 16+ is technically legal to have sex with an adult, with parental consent.
Note that it still frowned upon though.  Or well, not many people will frown upon say, 21 and 17, but 25+ and 18- they will frown.

In the US, it depends on the state. Younger than 18 is called "Jailbait" for a reason.  Statutory Rape is a thing, even where all parties agree that consent was given, the state will presume otherwise, because "legal code."

There are even requirements for "how old" the older partner is, compared to the teen, before that triggers.

https://aspe.hhs.gov/report/statutory-rape-guide-state-laws-and-reporting-requirements-summary-current-state-laws/sexual-intercourse-minors

EG, the teen can be OK with it. The parents can be OK with it. The rest of the family can be OK with it, and the person the teen is boinking can be OK with it--- If that person is older than the statutorily allowed limit, and or, the teen is below legal consensual age for that state, BAM--- Rape charge.

There are even requirements for "how old" the older partner is, compared to the teen, before that triggers.

That specific requirement is actually a damn sensible thing.

Given that you pretty much need to enact some age of consent, then having some leeway on relative ages is an extremely sensible thing.

Consider a possible scenario:

- You have a boy and a girl, dating. The boy is 1 day old than the girl. It's legal for them to have sex while they're both 17. It's legal for them to have sex while they're both 18. However, on his birthday, they have sex, and he's now jailed as a pedo rapist, since he was 18 and she was still 17. Say the state also enacted zero-tolerance / mandatory sentencing laws for this sort of thing, and they'd be forced to haul the kid in front of the court and convict him and put him on the sex offenders registry, because he had sex with his girlfriend on that specific day, yet any other day would have been completely fine.

Hence, the laws about relative age need to exist so that stupid scenarios where it's legal for a pairing to have sex both before and after a specific time-window, but illegal within the window just don't happen. Note that in many states they don't actually have laws that take into account relative age at all, so situations such as the above one could actually happen:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statutory_rape#Romeo_and_Juliet_laws

Quote
Often, teenage couples engage in sexual conduct as part of an intimate relationship. This may occur before either participant has reached the age of consent, or after one has but the other has not. In the latter case, in most jurisdictions, the person who has reached the age of consent is guilty of statutory rape.

Having the laws you mentioned is actually some small bit of common sense leaking into this clusterfuck of stupid laws.

The issue, Reelya-- is that "18 and 19" are fully legal adults, that should be able to choose to bang a 50 year old, if that is what they really want.  Because they are legally grown assed adults.

This is not the circumstance of "17yr + 18yr" romeo/juliette.

This is "19yr, in college, wants to date 25yr hunk. Hunk goes to prison, because more than 3 years older."

I agree that the age requirement is a sensible addition; just not with the cutoffs that have been mostly enacted, which exist to placate the "OMG!! STILL A CHILD!!" worldview that conservatives have about young people having sex.
