That... is exactly what I said. Not sure what the rest of it was shoved in there for. Wasn't making any comment besides noting singling out nyt on that front doesn't mean terribly much when it's a folly of more or less every major (and minor, really) news network in the US.

I would love to be a fan of Manifest Destiny, if we had our shit together first.  Last night's visit with dad involved not only several panhandlers, but walking around homeless people.  One was splayed across the sidewalk, such that I might have wanted to check his pulse if he hadn't been cuddling a bottle.
In other words, I wish we'd all get along in a greater union, but I don't think our United States are quite ready for that.  Particularly if the rest of America is finally getting it's shit together, which is good.

I ... was more continuing my train of thought than trying to respond to you sorry, so none of that was really in response to what you wrote. It wasn't intended to be any sort of commentary on what you wrote.

 Also, you pointed out that other media is just as complicit as the nytimes, I didn't address that ... which means I accepted the point implicitly. I would have explicitly addressed it if I doubted it. If someone doesn't object to a statement you made, wouldn't you assume they accept the point? I didn't think there was a need to signal agreement, a lack of disagreement allows your point to stand uncontested.

The only reason for singling out the nytimes is because it was previously mentioned in this thread as a bastion of integral journalism. The critique of the nytimes in partcular was because that's who people mentioned. Also, pointing out the limits on impartiality of one of the leading US media outlets shows up the limits of all others purely by implication. e.g. if you say "even the pope wanks" it doesn't carry the implication that other people don't wank ... you don't need to point that out. The fact that even the pope does it carries the implication that everyone does it.

Hey, I only asked whether it was universally accepted as such. One can only make assessments like that up to American stupidity.

Also: Never assume malice when economic incentives will suffice. Which is more likely: All of the US media agreeing in a vast conspiracy to ignore something as obscure as UNASUR*, or the intended audience simply not giving a shit? Now, I don't want to pull the brakes on your anti-imp train, but it sort of feels like you found a couple loose bits of straw and are now warning of the big scarecrow uprising...

Because it's one of the few things that Presidents have complete freedom and latitude on. This particular case isn't normal practice for Presidents however and they generally leave controversial ones until they're on the way out.

Not as such, no; he can't be retried for the same crime. Depending on the scope of the pardon, he might not be able to be tried for anything even loosely related to it.

He's being pardoned of the contempt of court charge he ate when the appeals (iirc, or somethin') hit the federal level. Whatever the state hit him with is still there, whatever else they feel like hitting him with is still there, etc., so on.

E: Amusingly goddamn enough, a good chunk of what's going on related to that is a state's rights issue, and trump is attempting to take a piss on them. Gods alive, this shit.

The states rights (the ACTUAL definition, mind you) thing seems incidential to me. Seems like he's just pardoning a loyalist for no other reason than that he's a loyalist, plus all the racist stuff that is bleeding red meat for his base.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I don't think trump is even aware of that side of things, or would give a single shit even if he was. It's just vaguely amusing (or something similar to it) that chunks of the GOP base are cheering the fed effectively pissing on a state court. Drives home what that chunk of their base really cares about, for the Nth time.
