Given that reports of lasers being shined at aircraft are usually from those flying the aircraft and not those shining the lasers themselves, we probably won't really know.

While lasers being shone at aircraft is already a big deal, if this really was via that method, it might be the first known case of it happening and the craft crashing as a result, so, it'd be a shitstorm as well. A police helicopter being intentionally shot down, via whatever method, is going to generate a shitstorm anyway.

According to the article in my newspaper, the police do say that the downed helicopter with two dead police officers is connected to the protests, but they can't or won't yet say how exactly.

Helicopter crashed. Why? No one knows yet. Forumers speculate human error, militias firing haphazardly into the air or someone directing a lazer beam into the pilot's eyes. Perhaps it was even a kamakaze drone collision? On board were policemen, let's hope they are hard as steel, if not the tragedy worsens.

European-style assault cars cause tragedy on the road as protestors are run down. What's to say about it? The guy crashing into protestors could be forgiven for mistakes, IF it were not that he reversed to slam into the crowd again. Clear case of attempted murder with a side of murder on the road. The driver in question is arrested in police custody, whose identity has not been revealed probably owing to fears of super murder before the court knows his name.

Doubt it, since the IWW as an organization doesn't seem prone to violence. What should be watched is what the white supremacists/nationalists/neonazis/'alt right' do next, I'm sure they're feeling emboldened by Trump, their percieved 'golden savior', effectively praising them by not straight up condemning them.

The article I linked says that they were part of patrols working in and near the protests, that might be it. What they were doing 7 miles from it, dunno. Edit: Or maybe that was initial reports, the one I linked says the same thing yours does.
