Local job fair the past two days.

Loads of government agencies attending, but there's basically no point in them being there, because Trump froze all of the hiring.

Thanks Obama Donald J Trump.

America: We will spend the entire GDP of the 40 smallest nations on earth on shit that is wildly impractical simply because it sounds cool and/or we could maybe use it to kill someone.

Example? Bat bombs. Trained war dolphins.

Real things.

Those were semi-practical ideas. Bat bomb research had up to that point had only cost $2 million(not much compared to some projects), but would have been extremely effective on Japanese buildings. The only reason it wasn't used is because The Bomb beat them to the punch. And the dolphins are never trained to destroy targets or kill anyone, it's mainly search and rescue and mine detection.

I thought the trained war dolphins was a soviet thing.
No, the soviets used mind-controlled giant squids
Nope, US still does, Ukraine took over the Soviet dolphins and sold them to Iran.

We don't talk about them. We just hope they remain in their slumber.

For what it's worth, the hiring freeze isn't entirely solid. Some parts of the fed are still able to hire, and state gov is unaffected (save for knockon effects of the fed trying to dig itself into a grand hole of uselessness). No clue if the agencies at your fair fall under one or the other, but it's entirely possible they actually have positions that are both needed and able to be filled.

Got sold to japan for use in espionage missions against chinese vessels, but were later decomissioned and sold to the private sector as highly trained pornstars.

All the ones I spoke to mentioned the freeze.

Eh, fair enough. Other side of it is that those things do tend to get organized well ahead of the actual date. If there was actually completely frozen agencies there, they were probably just booked before stupidity came into effect. Poor everyone.

I wasn't paying full attention and read this last bit of discussion as a single conversation involving the outsourcing of anti-communist squid soldiers to Japan where they can be famous porn stars and it was wonderful, thank you all.

If we bio-engineer whales to have tentacles, do you think Japan will finally stop killing and eating them?

We're screwed, we're screwed, we're screeeeewweeeeeddddddd...

I don't know what I'd do without federal college loans.

Probably lead a much happier and stress free life.
Present day student loans are one of the worst holes you can dig for yourself, loan wise.
Right.  But I need to pay for college somehow.

Honestly I think the better solution would be to bio engineer something already easily domesticated to be able to produce enough meat to be even remotely as cost effective as the whaling industry is.  They don't hunt whales just to piss off the rest of the world, they hunt whales because it's a lot easier to kill one whale and haul it to shore, than it is to haul in an equivalent weight in fish.  Japan doesn't exactly have the great plains to become a farming superpower.

Would be great if we could genetically engineer some kind of oyster or something to basically never stop growing and to be able to live off of the modern world's waste food.  But no genetically modified food is 'bad', nevermind all the problems it could solve, like an alternative to the whaling industry, crops that can grow reliably in places like deep africa, banannas immune to the bananna plague...  Just because one big gmo company decides to become Dr Evil, all gmos are bad.

Actually, I think that, just like the shit with the sharkfin soup, they very much DO hunt whales for basically shit and giggles.

"Warning - while you were typing 22 new replies have been posted. You may wish to review your post."

You know, all these leaks have painted an interesting picture of the White House. Earlier liberals were terrified by the various nominees, thinking they would face a storm of, well, you can imagine. I heard some conspiratorial types say that people like DeVos were intended to distract from people like Tillerson. But in fact, because Trump's White House is so at odds with itself, Tillerson may already be underwater. Combining this with the details about Betsy DeVos opposing the transgender rescinding (Sean Spicer claims it was a wording disagreement, but who listens to Sean Spicer?), it paints a picture where people who were decried by liberals as part of the Grand Trump Agenda may be at war.

I think the real fact of the matter is that Trump's policy is, yes, essentially haphazard and make-it-up-as-you-go-along, and without a single vision he can't unite anyone behind it. So it's just a policy free-for-all.

Anyway, news from everyone's favorite Orange-American (no, not trump; John Boehner obviously, you racists). John Boehner hasn't been part of Congress for a while now, and apparently, he's decided to play Peanut Gallery. Notably, he's decided to go with two interesting positions: Republicans won't repeal and replace Obamacare, and (don't have anything in your mouth when you read this): 'Trump may be the immigrant’s best friend'
Quote
It caused a double-take at the Orlando health care conference — former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell, Boehner’s opposite member onstage, asked, “Are you all right?”
