I very much enjoy how open the game is, letting you do pretty much whatever you want (within the reach of your resources). Only problem is I don't know what I want, or indeed how to do various things, and what they're good for. For example; does a workshop serve any purpose aside from specializing it? Only thing I can specialize it into is a carpenter shop, which seems rather reduntant... though I might be wrong.

I also saw it mentioned in this thread that woodcutters, farmers etcetera do their own thing without you needing to issue new orders every time they finish a task. Is that true? And if so, do I need to set it up in some way? I've noticed that a woodcutter I sent to clear an area of trees have since moved by himself to a close by area with trees, but he doesn't seem to be doing anything there.

EDIT: Oops, I made a mistake. Had the wrong peasant selected, the woodcutter is indeed felling trees in the new square. Great!

I'm in Wolockia, Kataclaz is my co-worker.

Alright!

Argh. My main (first) character is in some horrible undeveloped area. Is there a way to import stuff from other regions (f.e. by going there?)

Speaking of expansion, how does one do it. My buildings tab says I have enough expansion capacity, but how do I actually issue the command? ???

Take your lord just outside the closest border from your central square. Then click the two shields and the expand domain action should be available as long as it is the correct area.

Why make a charcoal burner instead of just burning trees?
I asked this earlier in the thread.  Charcoal has a +25 Fire skill bonus.  Trees have anywhere from +0 to +20 depending on the type of tree.  For a lot of processes the Fire skill is the biggest contributor by a large margin, so getting a higher bonus makes for a better end product.
Oh wow, thanks!
Didn't even know you could burn trees. Haven't even gotten that far to need to.

Move your lord into territory just outside your domain borders, then issue the Expand Domain command located under Titles(which is the double-shield icon). As noted previously, domain territories appear to be a puzzlework whose borders are invisible until claimed. So don't be surprised if your new territory encompasses area you didn't expect.

Of course I'm ninja'd.

Workshops in and of themselves don't do anything, you need to specialise them to be able to make anything in them.  You also need a workshop if you want to build a forge (the forge replaces the workshop), which then in turn needs to be specialised to make anything. edit: and you can specialise them to a bunch of things, not just carpenter shops, but you need some of the basic materials that shop uses - the help entry for workshop lists what you can specialise to, and then the entries for each shop tells you what resources you need to have to make that specialisation.

The way automation works - to my newbie understanding - is that if a specialist (well, of the type that produces items in some way) has a full rest bar and one or more automation tasks selected in their management screen, then on the hour they will do one of two things: 1) move to a tile where they can perform one of the toggled automation tasks, or 2) if on such a tile, start one of their toggled automation tasks.  They won't do both in one go, so that's why you'll often see your automated woodcutters sitting on a tree tile fully rested but not doing anything - last hourly tick they moved there so they won't start the actual harvesting until the next hourly tick.  That's less of an issue for specialists that don't need to move around (e.g. miners).

When I read about the struggles people are having in the north, and when I go and look at their settlements and wonder how the hell I would make money given those conditions, I tremble in fear at whatever horribleness is going to befall the south when the hot summer comes.

The sun was out today in the North. Radiant! 8)

And wow, what a difference a day & the weather can make. Yesterday I was around 13 units and 13% happiness across the board. Everyone but 1 guy was building huts and houses spread wide. I already had a lot of spare housing but no one new turned up for the whole day... Anyone who had finished a job recently was totally out - half the guys just resting and taking forever to regain their status due to morale. Clearly, zero wage policy wasn't good for production.

So, I set wages to give them 300 each last night. Enough for goods but not enough for those damned "Steroid-packed-super-expensive-wtf-Hams". Today, I get out of bed and the sun's a blazing through my Northern window with a super yet to be seen +10 to happiness, "everyone" is buzzin' and ready to work after buying up their needed goods in the sun.. and... there's a whooping 5 new guys turned up to the village overnight, along with another 2 during the day and maxed me out at 20 units.

Can't keep a Northerner down for long ---

The average temp has been on a rising trend recently!
The north will melt, and let the runoff wash away the southerners!

Unfortunately - as much as I want to say "right on, brother, right on!" --- its a bit over optimistic.  :P

The Radiant sun is long gone.
Its -12c.
Snowing.
Morale is back to a lovely -7 happiness per hit.

But the sun lasted long enough to get everyone happy, and everyone fired off onto projects, this Northerner can't complain.

Ah, I appear must have made my jeering remarks prematurely.
Well, it'll warm up eventually, somewhere between now and next July.
Then I'll be ready, assuming I'm still bothering with this, to make appropriate jeers! Mark your calendars!

Man, building pretty roads is so hard. It feels like I've been trying to arrange them in a nice square pattern for days now.

The annoying bit is that you don't seem to actually need intersections. Roads coming from four directions will make a perfect cross. Intersections just make diagonals.

Meh. I've kinda given up on this game. The politics part sounds interesting, but the city building is too tedious to really be fun. having to individually move settlers with no being able to click on the map and just choose 'build x with best suited builder' is just boring. I hope you guys are having more fun though.
