I'm noticing a couple mistakes I made in my population growth. One is that I didn't extend streets in all four directions in my square. I'm guessing I could've done this in the tutorial without dealing with construction times (like I am now). That led me to building five huts and six huts in a couple locations when I could've stopped at four huts and been prompted to then build houses, had I laid down streets.
Yea, its got a system of upgradable streets, crossings etc. Still getting my head around it also.
Seems you build E-W streets, N-S streets from the square - those streets can be eventually built up to 10 houses max & also extended along. But;
You also have crossings to think about if you want to add other branching streets eventually, those only upgrade to 8 houses & they can be built on top of huts & houses but not on top of a street. Eg. So once you made a N-S street thats what it is, a straight street through, you cant just add an E-W crossing in the middle of it afterwards when you decide to branch a street across. Could be a problem if you just keep building and upgrading a N-S street for a long way without realizing. You would need to demolish a N-S street section (along with the houses you upgraded) and rebuild a crossing & start again from scratch on that section. (at least this is what I understand so far, or not understand, as the case my be...)
Which makes me wonder how to plan ahead. Streets with one gap in between? Streets with 2? How often to make a crossing? How long to make the streets? Or just to hell with it and stop overthinking
