He runs over the human societal norms of eye contact.

"So, with what happened earlier, um..." his blush becomes a darker shade of red. "That might help you understand why I reacted the way I did. And why it was a bit strange that you didn't seem to care..."

"It's not that you made me uncomfortable, it's just... Um..." Alex shifts around slightly. He doesn't look uncomfortable, but more like he's sad he couldn't explain it properly... "I'm just confused. Normally we'd both be really embarrassed about something like that, but for some reason it's just me. You don't seem to care at all."
