Melee can be considered two different ways though. Either it's range, in which case it shouldn't matter if it's physical or not if it's happening at range 1 then it's melee, or type of weapon in which case if it targets defense it should trigger it I'd argue. Or we could go by 1.2 where I think it targeted as long as you could counter the attack normally

just use the Awakening version (which is it only activates upon non-lethal attacks made from adjacent squares, regardless of the actual weapon used) since it fits the version described in the handbook :u

In the PDF it refers to melee combat as combat when people are directly adjacent, including things like magic at close range.

Certain weapons have a Range of "1-2," which means they can attack from Melee or Range.

One is that all Magic spells have a "1-2" range, allowing them to attack Bowmen in Melee, or melee fighters at Range

Alright, glancing over the rulebook indicates that when it says melee attacks, it means combat that occurs at range 1. Which is obviously ambiguous and should have been clarified in a glossary or something, but we all know that the rulebook has problems so whatever. So Cript is right, and Counter should activate only at close range. That shouldn't have caused as much trouble as it did, I apologize.
