I like how this went from "let's read books and talk about them" to "let's read web comics people already read and post about."

If you're talking about Worm, you might want to click the link before you call it a webcomic. It's 100% serial fiction, zero visual artwork involved.

Currently reading Deathworlders, cheers Bumber. Lacks plot, but the idea's a fun one to toy with.

I think I'm going to go with the ol' ordered suggested list for the reading list. I'm a bit busy so I'll take some time setting them up.

I found Chapter 22 (a chapter so long it's split into 7 parts) particularly boring. If it had focused just on Adam's military training, instead of detailing his girlfriend's daily life, it would've been a lot more bearable.

If you want something similar but better written, I suggest John Ringo's A Hymn Before Battle. It details the story of a voracious hunter-species of aliens that are swarming across the galaxy, and the only species capable of defending against them are humans (due to some backstory of an ancient race genetically hard-coding nonviolence into the other space-faring species). The first book in the series is free online (link).

While I'll speak very highly of the baen free library as a resource, I definitely can't recomend anything by John Ringo for anything positive.

His work is extremely formulaic and the characters between his series are pretty much interchangeable. Still, it is what it is, pulp science fiction at its worst.

Don't forget the misogyny and right wingerism.

Misogyny is pretty rife throughout the science fiction genre, and pulp fiction titles in general, be they fantasy, crime novels or romance. Plus there's nothing wrong with supporting right wing values any more than left wing liberties. Of course if it offends readers, there's always the late Stieg Larsson's works to balance it out.

Okay, here is how this is going to work:

Every month, everyone suggests a book. These suggestions are made into a list, and I choose a random title that will become that month's reading.

If fanfictions, web originals, and other non-standard medium are picked, another vanilla book will also be picked as optional alternate reading for people who don't want to read fanfics and such.

You don't necessarily have to worry about length. The idea isn't about finishing a book as much as endorsing a book to be read and discussed every month.

This month's suggestions will also be included for September.

Let the suggesting begin!

The Book of the Damned: Fish raining from the sky! UFO-like things in the 19th century! Strange gooey falling stars! Humor! Wit! Non-Fiction! Ripped from the headlines! Printed in the year 1919! Available from Gutenberg.org and sacred-texts.com!

Also for my own suggestion, I'm going with At the Mountains of Madness, being one of my favorite Lovecraft story on the virtue of not being "oh noes black people" and having some of the best worldbuilding second to The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath.

Also normally we'd auggest after the previous book of the month is drawn, but for this time I'll have the deadline at the end of this week.

Well that was so disappointing I forgot this existed.

I'm going to draw lots soon, and I'm including books previously suggested.

Read!
