Monthly Book Club

Info

August-September 2016
At the Mountains of Madness

Looking at previous attempts at book clubs, I think the issue is that people don't often have the time nor money to procure books. It's a shame, because books are great and for everyone.

This thread is dedicated to sharing fiction and nonfiction available freely online. A monthly reading list may be started if there is interest.

Rule

1. Only share legally free literature. We don't want piracy here.
2. Please use spoilers liberally. Also give people an idea what is in the spoiler and what literature you are talking about.
3. Don't share anything that breaks the forum guidelines. This is very important since we will also deal with hyperfiction. Use your common sense to determine what is acceptable.

And before anyone does it, I'm putting up a link to the complete work of H.P Lovecraft.

Sure

Also, what's hyperfiction?

I'm going to guess its a term for what is usually called fanfiction.

EDIT:

Or not. Preliminary googling seems to indicate its something more like a CYOA.

It's apparently a style of fiction that incorporates hyperlinks.

Also gutenberg. Always gutenberg.

The hyperfiction I'm referring to are just web fiction. Which have chapter links.

Que? I can only find a film while searching John Carter.

Edit: If you mean A Princess of Mars, then I've found that it's avilable as a free ebook here:

Has Sherlock Holmes, so it's got that going for it.

Was going to recommend the thousand nights, too, but I'm not 100% sure how well it'd jive with the forum ToS, now that I think about it. It's a classic work but it gets kinda' raunchy in places, iirc. Is on gutenberg, though, at least burton's translation.

Gutenberg has a buncha' other stuff, though, including old sci-fi and whatnot, buncha' old philosophy works, plays... Gutenberg's pretty great. It gets a fair amount of attention but it probably deserves more.

Anyone know if any of the translations of Romance of the Three Kingdoms has gone public domain? I know there's two or three that are online, but I'm not entirely sure how legal they are >_>

Yeah, Princess is the first book in the series. I'd imagine the forum'd come after me if I agitated to go through all the public domain ones, though.

According to Wikipedia, the earliest English translation for Three Kingdoms is 1925, and the publisher has kept the copyright updated, so no dice*. Unless some translator somewhere specifically made one for the public domain, which I doubt. And while I'm at it, there's no free English translation of Journey to the West either =/

*Public domain transition in the US is pretty much halted at 1923. Read up on the Copyright Term Extension Act, also known as the Mickey Mouse Protection Act.**

**Of course, that is US law only. There are translations online where they have gone into the public domain of other countries, but since we're in the US I'm pretty sure it's illegal for us to read them. And for that reason I will not be linking them either, since I'm fairly sure these forums reside on US servers.***

***International Copyright Law is a clusterfuck.

A Princess of Mars is pretty good so far, even for pulp.

Also how do you guys think we should handle the reading list? I see that the issue would be the wide variety of genre and the facr that people likely won't want to read fanfics.
