Off we go. Here's hoping we come across Loki on our path, he might actually be helpful given our goal.

Or maybe, instead of taking oaths that are bound to doom us to utter destruction, we ought have to asked for a way out first? Are we actually dead, GM? If not, someone made a big doo doo by making hasty assumptions.

Oh, come now! It was the manliest, most testosterone-poisoned heroic thing I could think a Viking with awesome brass balls would do, with extra points for the almost-certain probability of an awesome fail... Where would Beowulf be without the impetuosity and swagger?

The GM just used the mystery character to speed up the train wreck as is well within his province (I do object on the genealogy, but that's moot now), even though it'd have been fun actually standing a chance...

A real Norseman would not cock up by insulting his own gods like that. But then, we have not been a very clever mortal in the first place so...

The GM is being ambiguous on purpose though, that is true. Still, we aren't blameless, he's just going with what was decided, he even forewarned us about it.

You have to admit though, it does take courage to face down the inevitable and fight against it, and swear on our honour/life to do so.

We lost to a weaksauce berserker, why would we manage this? Besides, there is a ton of people that depend on us back in the colony and that was thrown to the side by a pointless boast.

Not so weaksauce, he was well known as a duelist and we almost took him with us. As for the people, they're still in Midgard, which is no longer our place; the living must go on without the dead.

As for why: because it's our right, and as far as I know Icelanders were remarkably insistent on honourableness and righteousness - hotheads as they were, there was very little feuding because their thing system worked.
Icelandic freedom and democracy would be nothing and could not work without respect for the law; the things could only work if the free individuals recognized the law as a higher value.

Are you sure we are dead? Have you checked? Just because you can communicate with the gods doesn't mean you are totes gone yet, besides I have a strong feeling we aren't quite gone as you would think.

In hell there is no night. Nor is there day.

A perpetual grey mist shrouds the skies and drowns the world in eternal twilight. Fog covers the land and gives the barren wastes a muted quality.

There is no drink in Hel. The only place to drink from is Gjöll but every time you attempt to your hands recieve cuts. Cuts that never seem to quite heal. Yet you never bleed out.

There is no food in Hel. You are constantly feeling hungry, the maddening feeling of near-starvation endlessly tormenting you.

There is no sleep in Hel. For everytime you fall over in exhaustion you hear them. Howling in the distance, beasts slowly coming ever closer. After a while you grew numb to it and fell asleep, until you felt their foul breath on your face, until in a panic you awoke and saw their shades in the mist. Now you can't sleep anymore for what you have seen goes beyond mortal terror and comprehension.

There are no people in Hel. You seem them in the periphery of your vision, pale shades struggling just like you through the horrid landscape. Fellow Travellers of Torment.

As you spend your days tortorously making your way out of this horrid place you become ever paler, ever less. Your body is emaciated and you barely have the strenght to drag your axe behind you.

Finally ,tortourously, you arrive at a crossroads. One way continues along the river Gjöll into the misty distance.
A second leads west you think you can make out the forms of trees, although you are not entirely sure.
Finally northwards into the darkness leads the last way.

[29-15] you have no idea where they lead to.

Head for the trees. They're not the Yggdrasil, but the might be to it what foothills are to mountains.

We have our axe with us, trees means lumber, life. Maybe taking some will rejuvenate ours?

You wander deep into the unknown forest and soon the oppressive overcast sky of Hel's Outer Reaches is replaced by the dark oppressive gloom of the forest. Trees five times the size they should be fill your vision and you get the distinct impression of being watched.

[38+16= 54] It's wolves. Definetly wolves. You pretend like you didn't notice for now, but close the grip around the head of your axe.

[6-15] As you decide to settlee for what you percieve as night you begin cutting down wood for a fire, the wolves always keeping a respectful distance. But the moment your axe hits the tree - nothing happens. Your axe rebounds from the wood. Startled, you take another swing, again rebounding barely making a scratch in the wood while the swing revebrates uncomfortably through your body.

What in the name of the gods is this new trickery? Angry, you give up. Clearly those trees can't be chopped. And you certainly won't stay still in a forest full of wolves without fire to protect yourself.
At that moment you hear howling in the distance, seems like the wolves are up to something...

A. Follow the Howls, you are hungry and cold, lets rectify that.

B. Clearly yet more trickery, continue following the path instead.

If Little Red Riding hood ever teaches us anything, is to never stray from the path.
