Yeah, "blockchain" is how people refer to the tech side of this. It is completely independent of what you do with it.

The payload for each block is all the transactions that have occurred since the last block. And to determine how much money one "account" has, you have to read all historic blocks up to the present and tally the + and - amounts. The way coins enter the economy is that whoever processes the transactions gets to add their own "free money" transaction at the start of the block. So just like transactions can be for an arbitrary amount, so can the "new bitcoin". Also, there's separate crypto built into the transaction system. It's pretty impressive that it's a financial system where the database is 100% public yet nobody has cracked it.

Look at the qualities of blockchain - it's distributed, stable, redundant, doesn't need a server, provides a full audit trail by default, and it's public yet uses well-tested encryption, which provides ONLY the person who has the right to the data to read/write their own data. Banks and stock exchanges are looking at converting their ledgers to use the tech now. Given how often traditional server/databases are getting hacked, you can see blockchain systems beat the corporate shit 20 different ways.

The problem is that computational ability continues to rise in the general public's ability to obtain, so any given level of crypto difficulty is always dangerous to standardize on.  Due to the immense difficulty/overhead in getting the entire banking industry to agree on standards and practices, there is a LOT of inertia in terms of adopting new standards. By the time they agree to take up bitcoin like blockchains, the crypto density of the chains will need to be expanded.

This is a moving target, and always will be.

It's really made up of several different techs, as reading the intro to the original research paper will reveal:
https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf

They use the pre-existing digital signature technology for the individual transactions/coins, the blockchain technology was added on top of that for the purpose of resolving the double-spend issue when there's no central authority.

McCain, durin a visit to Kiev, said the Russian cyberattacks on the US are 'an act of war' and Russia 'will have to pay the price', and he will do whatever is in his power to increase sanctions
He also he promised the Ukraine that 'there will never be an American congress that will sacrifice the freedom and independence of the Ukraine'.

With this he seems to head on a collision course with Trump on the matter.

Saudi's funded ISIS is attacking us on EU soil, and all Obama is worried about is that some actual, true information has been leaked to the American public.

I see were are the democrat's priority. That and funding terrorist groups that actually are fucking al quaida operating in foreign, sovereign countries in defiance of international laws.
I still don't like Trump, but I think he's still way better than the alternative. I hope that now that they are weakened we can get rid of Merkels too.

Quote from: Donald Trump
I think that computers have complicated lives very greatly. The whole age of the computer has made it where nobody knows exactly what’s going on.

I'm pretty sure there are people who know what's going on. Trump would be wise not to assume that everyone is as ignorant as he is.

No. Before the Internet, we only had unbiased sources that dealt in objective fact. Sensationalism is a new phenomenon. Paper tabloids like the Enquirer are an imitation of online clickbait.

Ease of information access is counter to assured information quality.

Ease of access is more useful, IMO, but requires an educated and critical consuming public.

We don't have that. Instead we have an overtaxed, poorly educated, highly opinionated public that is easy to mislead by exploiting its biases.

Sadly, reducing access to attempt better quality information also strongly increases the efficacy of well constructed propaganda. (See China).

What needs to happen is to stop overtaxing the public mindshare with "produce! Produce! Consume! Consume!" And incentivise adult education with non economic motives.

That won't happen though.

The Russians appear to have attempted to hack into a Vermont electric utility company.

This is getting serious now, attempting to influence the election is one thing, but this is on a new level.

I wonder if Trump is going to deny that Russia ever tried to attack the Vermont utility company. Arguably he's trying to deny the Russians messed with the election because of the effect it has on his legitmacy, but this one has absolutely no affect on his legitimacy.

First time that I see a government so blatantly trying to sabotage the next administration. He got nothing on Russia, he doesn't even accuse Russia of anything serious, he's just trying to sabotage US's diplomacy. I wonder if he's also sabotaging US economy so Trump's first few month looks bad.

They didn't even get into the grid though, it was a single computer, quite possibly an accidental target of a brute-force attack on all weak computers in USA.

I mean, "the same kind of malicious software that US authorities believe was used by Russian hackers in an attempt to influence November's election." - do they mean the phishing e-mails? Because that's the only example of Russian "malicious software" that I've seen so far.

I have no idea what they mean either, both the WaPo article (don't know why CNN didn't link it, *shrug* ) and CNN just say that it was a batch of code that the feds called Grizzly Steppe, no details other than that. Likely for obvious reasons.

Though to be fair, both articles say that officials don't know the scope or intent yet.
