Maybe now the American left (and that means you) will admit that it has its head up its ass?

You have to do better, and Obamacare was pitiful.

Between universal healthcare and what 'murrica had prior to it.

Tiruin needs to stop being positive. Not really.

The supreme court seats alone make this a tragedy, not as bad as if Pence were directly picking the seats, if only because I literally have no clue where Trump will go on them, so there is a chance he actually puts in something besides the most rootin-tootin-shit-kickinest abortion-hatingest stompin-on-anything-but-white-males-ingest hyperconservative justice possible, but that's small comfort.

The house and senate seats aren't going anywhere in 2018 or even 2020, if we start working on it now we might be able to get redistricting in after the census so 2022 goes back to something more representative of the demographics as a whole, here's hoping.

No, those are shitpiles we're just gonna have to stomp our way through no matter what now.

What sucks is, well, the President is supposed to be something you look up to, someone to act as our face to the world, and our face to the future.

For all the fake-cowboy derpism Dubya oozed, he was still a Bush, sure he wasn't his dad, and his dad wasn't Reagan, but they stood in the same rooms together. It was embarrassing watching him chew on lines and spit them out in fascinatingly jumbled up fashions, and it would be nice if he was respected for more than swagger and a trigger happy demeanor, but he, and by extension us, still had to be taken seriously.

Then Obama, he's charming, funny, a nice guy, who got Bin Laden capped in the head. That was nice.

Trump?

We're reduced to the meme-candidate?

That is our new face on the world stage?

He is what little kids are going to remember as their first president?

Fuck.

safe in a 1st world country with a conservative government

if you're a white dude, sure

doesn't change the fact that the lives of millions of people in the country are in danger and a republican led gov't is likely to worsen that, and most certainly won't make anything better

saying things are worse elsewhere doesn't help a god damn thing

I prefer to stay out of these discussions, since I'm neither American nor interested in politics, but...

there's a difference between the danger of persecution and the chance of being hit by a car.

I worry more about people reacting badly to me being trans than I do being hit by any locomotive, or dying in a similar way.

If you're an average young white dude in america you have what? 10 times the chances to be shot by the police to what you'd have in Europe? A slightly better income but 100x the healtcare costs? The "privilege" to work 45 hours a week and no vacation? At will employment contract and no unemployment compensation? University you still can pay and will leave you with no jobs anyway?

I'd like to invite all of you to spend a year in "socialist" Belgium and France, and all of us to do the same in America, then we'd know why we fight for, and what we means by progress.

Ah man, I think people mostly voted Trump because he offered an "honest" alternative to the usual political nonsense people get. I think the vast majority of folk would accept the openly gay part, and would be willing to accept the furry part as non-problematic, unless you're weird and force it job other people. Not sure how that'd work really... unless you "forced" that on other people, you'd be fine.

You're right, because whichever story people choose to cling to about Clinton is so much worse than the reality of Trump. Lying, cheating, disrespectful, thin-skinned, narcissistic, sociopaths with a penchant for "locker room talk" are so much better than a capable politician with connections throughout government and around the world and a track record of doing shit to try to make the lives of other people better. Oh, but I forgot her pro bono work fighting for children's rights was part of some grand evil scheme to do something to benefit her, and she would have gotten away with it too if not for those meddling republicans!

I mean, you do know Trump is lying through his teeth every time he suggests or implies or flat out states that he is an "outsider", don't you?

He runs in the same circles as lots of these other folks in government, but he didn't have an interest in anything which didn't involve his name in big gold letters on a building, or chasing girls his daughters age, so he didn't really get too involved in the actual functional parts of it.

So now he's figured out how to slide into another business venture, and his track record doesn't bode too well... but this one happens to involve the framework holding up the government which enables all those wonderful things like highways, legal backbones, oh hey, and this thing here, the internet! Well, they let that contract lapse recently, so hey, maybe it'll be out of the reach of his stubby little fingers!

This seems like you're letting good (or even just not as shit) be the enemy of best. You think a complete revolution of the american system to a more European model would be best? Maybe you're right, but that's an impossible pipe dream. The take away from this election isn't going to be the left needs to go more left (and even if it was, that's not actually going to win). Obviously we'll need a bit more time for the full post mortem on this, but Hillary didn't loose because of the highly liberal places didn't support her enough. She lost to the more moderate middle class middle america white people. The take away for the democratic party here is that they need to abandon the left to go back to the center.

Frankly, constantly just saying "lololo america so shitty and conservative git sociealist scrubs" is exactly the  european equivalent of having "ones head up ones ass" that you claim lost the democrats the election.

The left moving to the center is what's been happening in the EU for 25 years now. It didn't make things better for a lot of people, I can tell you.
If anything, the democrats should stand firm for their beliefs. Moving to the center will only cost them more votes, as it did the leftwing parties here.

That's all fine and dandy to say, but clearly the center belongs to the Republican now. So it seems like a hard sell. "Don't try to win. It won't work out long run." Might even be right. Doesn't seem likely to actually happen though.

Stop alienating the losers of the current game by proposing mild compromises. The Democrat long term program is so bad anything else looks good.

In Europe far right AND far left parties are climbing in the polls, the establishment is just more willing to go to the "right" than to the left, and hope that by being socially right wing they can appeal to far right voters. Meanwhile, oppositions parties will start to muster nationalist-left programs and claim the polls to victory. Mark my words.
