I could see those "richer, Christian parts" still being partially Pagan though. Wendish Crusades went straight through middle of Germany and up until, like, Reformation people there were scared shitless of secret pagans hiding in forests. Poland was not saint either and only in like XIIIth or XIVth century Christianity actually became the dominant religion. Obviously, in most cases it was just bunch of peasants mixing folklore and Christian beliefs but it gave excuses to people like Teutonic Knights (or Norwegians) to raid and be annoying dicks. I imagine it would be only worse in Sweden/Norway/Whenever because of the distances and remoteness of villages. Hell, IIRC, there were actual (as in, unbroken line of worship since like prehistory, not some neo-pagan wannabes) pagans in Finland in XIXth century even.

Some of these rich areas were also the ones that self-christianised and converted from the roots rather than from the crown, though. Really old churches in southern Sweden are built like small keeps or watchtowers, even, so that the Christians could flee there and defend themselves when crusaders came to baptize the area again.

What happened to Roman Britain?
From the 2nd century A.D. Roman Britain found itself under attack from people who lived outside the Roman borders. The Romans thought these people were not civilised and called them barbarians. The Roman army and navy defended Britain.

By the 5th century A.D. barbarian tribes were attacking other parts of the Roman Emperor Honorius decided that the Roman legions in Britain were needed elsewhere. He sent a letter to the people of Britain telling them the soldiers had to leave. They must fight the Anglo-Saxons and invaders on their own. In AD 410 the last Romans left.

Occupied with the constant barbarian threat and the continental escapades of the usurper, Constantine III, the legitimate emperor, Honorius, "sent letters to the communities of Britain, bidding them defend themselves."

This event is usually, erroneously referred to as "The Roman Departure from Britain" or something akin to that. The fact is that the bulk of the Romans had already departed the island long before, and Honorius' message was probably an official acknowledgement of that reality.

It is not entirely clear whether Honorius' intentions were for a final severing of relations, at this time. He could have simply meant that the Britons were on their own for the present, while Roman soldiers were otherwise engaged. In any case, for some years there may have been a lingering residue of nostalgia for their lives as Roman subjects, but, after this crucial point, Rome was unable to exert any further control over the citizens of its former province. The rule of Britannia then fell to a series of Romano-British "tyrants" (Jerome, "Epistola," 133.9, 14) and, subsequently, to the Saxons.

In this significant year, also, the Goths, under Alaric, sacked Rome.

On the last day of December 406 (or, perhaps, 405), the Alans, Vandals, and Suebi living east of Gaul crossed the Rhine, possibly when it was frozen over, and began widespread devastation.

As there was no effective Roman response, the remaining Roman military in Britain feared that a Germanic crossing of the Channel into Britain was next, and dispensed with imperial authority – an action perhaps made easier by the high probability that the troops had not been paid for some time. Their intent was to choose a commander who would lead them in securing their future but their first two choices, Marcus and Gratian, did not meet their expectations and were killed. Their third choice was the soldier Constantine III.

In 407 Constantine took charge of the remaining troops in Britain, led them across the Channel into Gaul, rallied support there, and attempted to set himself up as Western Roman Emperor. Honorius' loyalist forces south of the Alps were preoccupied with fending off the Visigoths and were unable to put down the rebellion swiftly, giving Constantine the opportunity to extend his new empire to include Spain.

In 409 Constantine's control of his empire fell apart. Part of his military forces were in Spain, making them unavailable for action in Gaul, and some of those in Gaul were swayed against him by loyalist Roman generals. The Germans living west of the Rhine River rose against him, perhaps encouraged by Roman loyalists, and those living east of the river crossed into Gaul. Britain, now without any troops for protection and having suffered particularly severe Saxon raids in 408 and 409, viewed the situation in Gaul with renewed alarm. Perhaps feeling they had no hope of relief under Constantine, both the Romano-Britons and some of the Gauls expelled Constantine's magistrates in 409 or 410. The Byzantine historian Zosimus (fl. 490's – 510's) directly blamed Constantine for the expulsion, saying that he had allowed the Saxons to raid, and that the Britons and Gauls were reduced to such straits that they revolted from the Roman Empire, 'rejected Roman law, reverted to their native customs, and armed themselves to ensure their own safety'.
