Guild training intensity set to medium ((This turn, I'll allow Stavros to train at low intensity. In the future, such favoritism will lower loyalty.))

A small celebration is had, honoring the plant mages for converting deadly mushrooms into food. The oldest, Alicia, seemed to be very uncomfortable by all the attention, but the other two enjoyed themselves, and were quite proud of their accomplishment and recognition.

Miss Sara takes a pair of guards and travels to the capital at an exhausting pace. On arrival, she meets with the local guards, who had made no progress in finding the lost apprentice and given up. She carefully searching street-by-street, trying to sense any magical presence, but senses nothing other than potentiates. After three weeks of increasingly erratic searches, her guards convince her that she won't find the apprentice like this, and to return to the guild. She spends the trip back upset and worrying. She spends little time all year on practice, but does damage several trees on the return journey with destruction-enhanced punches.

She remembered to meet with the king to ask about studying death-sentenced prisoners, but the guild is too far away, and he is unwilling to either reduce the public spectacle of executions or spare the forces guarding prisoners. She may be able to later convince him to donate some captured enemy soldiers, if the guild can spare the manpower for guards, or simply have Stavros follow the army.

Expanding the mushroom fields goes well. The fungus grows rapidly under the care of nine people. Now, under the care of a plant mage, it is capable of reducing the guild's food costs by up to 50%, but going further than 20% would reduce loyalty.

The Faisia family is paid to build another room onto the main guild building. They build it reluctantly, but well. The men are happy to have a better room. Their old room will be dedicated to storage, entirely freeing up the entrance room of the main guild building for meetings and socialization.

Only limited mushrooms were available for festival donations this year, and the guild's mushroom-based recipes remain poor. The imported food (and mushrooms) was tentatively eaten by about half of the villagers, who were rationing their own food carefully.

Near the end of the year, the wayward triplet returns, looking exhausted and depressed. He claims that he just couldn't take the thought of joining the army, panicked, and abandoned his brothers. He is angry at himself, but won't join the army even to save his brothers.

The plant mages had a training accident. They were practicing together, racing to grow three flowers on the same shrub, when there was a magical explosion. The one who had nearly died last year had her skin turned green and hard. She died less than 30 seconds after Stavros reached her. Stavros is pretty confident that he felt her soul as she passed, and that it may have been trying to cling to him. He is upset to have failed to hold it, but did get a bit of experience with handling souls before it faded into the afterlife.
The other two escaped without any major changes, but were unconscious for the next week, and had trouble using magic for another week after that.

Alicia has been advancing through the notes Eturi left behind quickly. She thinks she will be able to match Eturi's skill in plant magic in another two years.

Basel, the sound mage, has been spending time with a female from the Faisian family.
((Why he would want to do such a thing is unknown. Inbred villager muggles are icky))

Hunting and trapper were poor this year. The village spent much of it's more easily traded wealth to stay fed.

Hybise held off the enemy forces this year, and burnt much enemy farmland.

Spoiler: Reports (click to show/hide)

Missions
Search for recruits!
Send someone out, from three months to a year, looking for those with magical potential.
 Consider sending some guards.
Suggested Skills: Level 2 in any magical skill would greatly increase the chances of finding at least one recruit.

Cultivate food.
The guild now has a good sized patch of mushrooms. Being a fungus, it will be fine unattended, but a plant mage must remain at the guild to grow a useful amount of food from it. (They will do this automatically if possible.)
Mushrooms alone are not a suitable food solution. Having plant mages search for and experiment with other food producing plants would further alleviate financial burdens.

Expansive mushroom fields.
The guild now produces something tangible. Further expand the mushroom fields, and there may be enough to export, either to the merchants or to the village. Note that tending to the current fungus provides adequate training in plant magic, but expanding it would take more time and give much less experience.

Explore the Ruins.
An abandoned city is a few months of travel away. Miss Sara would like to explore it. She believes that the trip would be a fun bonding experience that would improve the loyalty of anyone she takes. This would take half a year.

Financial Decisions
You have 4 credits to spend.
The new house could be further expanded a single time, although there are no pressing uses for the extra room. (2 credits.)
The village has a few small festivals every year, which could be made fancier. Buying some consumable luxuries for the village for several years would slowly improve their views of you.
Buying more luxuries for the guild is always appreciated.

So, the guy who can walk without making any noise is dating the farmer's daughter. God bless nobody invented shotguns yet.

Aaaaanyway:

Have Sara talk with Alicia: she realizes that she is more of the shy kind of person. Ideally, once she reaches Eturi's level, she would be able to teach other students, but if she doesn't want to work with people she could be in charge of research, finding and growing useful plants. The others could learn from her writings. See what she thinks about this.

Talk with the triplet: we are fine with his decision, he just could have told us about that. The idea was that he and his brothers would train under Vorg, not to participate in the war. We want all our members to be alive and well. Now, there is no need to be depressed, he just has to learn from Vorg's notes, and not from him directly.

Talk with Basel: ask about if his possible relationship is known to the Faisia family. In the Guild we don't have any problems with that. In fact, ask him if she could bring the girl to have a chat with all of us. Basel is Gluttonous, which means that that girl problably knows how to cook. See if she has any ideas to make any proper recipe with the mushrooms. If his interests in her are romantic, maybe we can make the plant mages grow some nice flowers for her.

As for the activities:

Go with everyone on the expedition! Take three guards for protection. If Alicia wants to stay she is free to do so. Anyone who wants to stay can do so, but better be somewhat insistent with everyone else.

The rest of the year, everybody trains on moderate. Nobody is at risk of dying right now.

Spending decisions:

Luxury goods for the guild and the festivals! Save two credits for later.

Once we stabilize we should start working to become more self-sustainable, and getting more apprentices in different fields of magic (which, upon failing, could give Stavros some useful practice).

She barely hesitates before responding "I'd rather teach students than be in charge of plant research." She frowns in thought for a few seconds before continuing "If you're asking what I want, I want to learn how to make a singing garden. Just like in Silvi's tale. It's a silly dream, but I've always loved that story."

Talk with the triplet: we are fine with his decision, he just could have told us about that. The idea was that he and his brothers would train under Vorg, not to participate in the war. "I thought it wouldn't come to that. That I could stand with them. It .. then .. war. I just .." The fire mage trails off helplessly, waving his arms slightly.

If anything we need more muggle fraternization. The more people who have positive perspectives of people who are mages, the better off we'll be when things screw up.

I say we support the efforts of the singing garden. It's a solid and specific goal to have and it's something that people probably won't run away screaming from. In other words, it's a tourist attraction that if successful will provide positive associations with our guild.

We should assure the triplet that it's okay. Quite frankly, war sucks, and he was in a bad position. He's alright and here now and that's all that matters.

I was hesitant about the plan of action, but then remembered that we have 5 guards not 3.

We may want to look into hiring a cook or chef. It would be a luxury thing for the guild and we would have someone who can figure out something to do with the mushrooms.

I like the Singing Garden, but only as a project once both she and Basel are better mages, because righ now it is not achievable.

We should not press on the issue with the triplet right now, but later reassure him that everything is okay.

I do not know if hiring the cook would be worth it. He may not ahve the materials to work with. I'd rather ask around for ideas a little more. Cooking s something that almost everybody knows how to do.

@Singing Garden & Triplet: Works for me.

@Cook: We could use the cook to start teaching our own people how to cook and gain additional mundane skill in it. They way we're starting off in a better position in that regard. We can then turn our decrease in loyalty from luxury lost into an increase from pride in one's work and cooperative activities, while also lowering costs.

Hmmm. You know what? Let's hear first about the cost of hiring the cook, then I'll decide if it is worth it or not.

Also a good idea. I figured that we could try hiring someone from the village as we wouldn't have to house them necessarily and blah blah publicity blah blah village likes us better.

Just noticed this.

Also, Vorg is doing well. We may be able to eventually pull a combo of burning plus growing things again with the help of plant mages.

Miss Sara takes most of the guild to explore her ruins. Alicia, who wants to get through Eturi's notes as soon as possible, stays behind with two guards.

Miss Sara greatly enjoys finally having time to lead the guild to the ancient city of Cymi. The sight of the ruins leaves her feeling sad - she had visited once in her youth, and they have visibly decayed further since then.

She gets the idea of trying to magically fix a bronze statue, with the help of the fire mages, as a bonding exercise and to help Torph, the triplet, get over his lingering depression.
They nearly had it, but the magical pressure breaks through the ruined floor, and the three fall into a formerly hidden basement. Torph is no longer depressed. Torph is no longer alive. Miss Sara is no longer enjoying the trip. Miss Sara is no longer alive. Fire Apprentice 4 is now severely injured and has a broken left arm.

Greatly upset by the tragedy and shaken up, the guild returns home. The guards carry the last fire apprentice, with frequent stops as Stavros ensures it's safe to continue moving him.

They eventually return a full month later than expected, worrying Alicia greatly. Nothing nearly as interesting happened during their absence.

The guild splurges on luxuries, trying to ease their loss, and the renewed feelings of how dangerous magic is.

By the end of the year, Alicia claims to have finished learning from Eturi's notes on basic plant magic, leaving only a few scrolls of more advanced musings.
Alicia looked through Miss Sara's writings. She thinks that there is enough knowledge there that a mage could figure out Destruction, Infusion, or Runecrafting from them, but it would be very risky. At least half a year's experience with magic would be needed.

Basel's girl proves useless for mushroom-based recipes. Most local species are poison or aren't worth foraging for, and they are only rarely bought from the traders.

The guild's supplies mushroom-heavy dishes to to the village festivals. The villagers brave enough to try them mostly think they're strange exotic foods.

A string of battles goes poorly for Hybise. It loses ground.

Alicia now has level 2 plant magic.
Alicia trait discovered: Fast Magical Learning
Fire apprentice 4's name revealed to be Phyreli.
Plant apprentice 3's name revealed to be Viusi.

Select a new guild leader. Choices are: Stavros the necrohealbot (yes please), Basel the sound mage (he's ambivalent), or Alicia the plant mage and only level 2 (please no). The other plant and fire mage lack skill and seniority.
The guild leader will influence mid-turn decisions as well as GM-generated mission and financial ideas.

......

Are we allowed to mulligan? I was holding off on suggesting this because I figured we might be able to work up from where we are with Sara and we were beginning to make progress. And then we rolled quite poorly. All of our leaders have died from unnatural causes and like our army, we just keep losing ground. We have 5 people right now with our most experienced member off in the military and when he comes back, if he comes back, he's probably going to be a little pissed his friend is dead.

If we decide to continue with this run, here's what I think we can do.

First things first, after we choose the guild leader, we should set training intensity to low. We simply can't afford any more deaths right now.

The one advantage to having fewer people is that we have more money to throw around. I think we should spend 2 credits on villager loyalty, 2 credits on guild loyalty, and start saving up the last credit. We could spend that last credit on getting seeds for corn or wheat or something else so we can start adding some variety to our field. Once we get a large enough and varied enough field, we can start exporting to draw merchants and make more money. We could also purchase the last room and try to set it up as a training room so people are less likely to die hopefully. The basic idea is to go slower and steadier to try to build up some sort of solid base line. Once we're steady, we can go out recruiting.

We might want to look into government oversight. Some sort of administrator/scribe to help keep record of things and to be a faster liaison to the king and to have a better handle on knowing what the king wants. We know he likes military things and flashy military things, but we could know specifics about what he likes best.

Are we allowed to mulligan?
No, and your position is overall slightly better than it was at start. You're just missing a bit of versatility in magic schools, which can be fixed easily enough.

Basel spends some time haggling with the merchant caravan.
For 3 credits per year, the merchants will try to get information on new mages. Vorg Rocksplitter is in the army, and tales of his powers will be spreading. New mages that survive will be able to act more openly, at least in some areas. With luck, your guild will be able to recruit some before they explode, are killed, or are found by a criminal organization.

I Vote for Stavros being the new Guild leader, What could go wrong with him?
Well, since the dice like killing your leaders off, he'd probably get magic-cancer before he can send everyone off on shady missions.

With that news, we could do a credit to villager and guild loyalty each and then pay the merchants to keep an eye out for mages.
