Alchemists make very varied things, clerics do the things and also fight.

Alchemists have a more easily accessible healing item as well as poisons, potions, and small consumable items. No, they do not need to stay out of combat. Also, the best way to think of an alchemist is Rikku from Final Fantasy X. Or look at Shade's Character sheet.

Also, if you're going for historical accuracy, why is average lifespan so long? An early marriage age doesn't make as much sense when people live to 60.
