Update 9: The Nuclear Holocaust

It has begun.

The garrison of Hamburg was small, but amount of civilians lost goes in hundreds of thousands. Did Zulu bomb it to intimidate us? To test the weapon? No paradrop or coastal landing followed, so it's not really prelude to invasion either it seems.

Maybe Shaka is just that cruel.

Well I can be cruel too.

Zulus just lost 11 Bombers and few land units they had parked there after they captured the city.

Also, Chancellor Frederick ordered drastic measures to be taken to ensure the survival of ZE REICH.

One of those drastic measures.

"We're now broadcasting live from the relief camp at the outskirts of Berlin that had just became second victim of Zulu nuclear strikes. Thousands of survivors are treated for radiation burns and we just received a message from the Reich Parliament's Emergency Headquarters that Chancellor Frederick is safe and is treated for minor injuries."

Another Zulu city mysteriously exploded.

We also learn of a terrible development: Zulus developed Fusion Power and the blueprints for the dreaded Deathbots.

The fallout from all this recent nuclear explosions is concerning environmentalists across the globe. Our engineer corps will try to clean up our fallout areas but that might not be enough to prevent the incoming climate disaster.

Our spy scores a major victory against the Mongols. We will attempt to create a Deathbot as soon as possible.

Zulus bomb Berlin with a nuke again.

In 1988AD we finished our secret project. We obtain photos of the planet Andala.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I tried to show the frontlines. You can see the extend of Mongol and Zulu expansion on the minimap in top right corner.

During her stroll to cause more mischief, our Spy spotted one of the walking terrors, a Deathbot, in Mongol territory.

Zulus began constructing a spaceship.
PS: Mongols followed suit next year.

Bremen gets captured by Mongol paratroopers!!

Climate catastrophe happens; part of fertile grasslands turn into drier plains or even desert, while a whole lot of coastal lands become thick, murky swamps.

Our Partisans recapture Bremen and from local Mongol encampment steal the blueprints of Laser.

In 1993, Berlin gets nuked by Zulus for the third time. SDI Defense is scheduled to be built there but also in Bremen (which will encompass Munich and Hamburg also), Nuremberg (will encompass Hannover and Heidelburg), Ormuz and Leipzig.

The first Nuremberg Deathbot has been launched.
PS: The Mongols expended a salvo of 11 Cruise Missiles to bring it down. Siiigh.

Curses! This means that we won't get to 2020AD before someone wins, and that's a defeat... right?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Do we continue to eke out a living to the 2020AD or do we call it over now? The game will technically end in 2011 anyways.

Chancellor Frederick decided to hold a referendum above this thread, so go vote!

I believe that if you capture or destroy the Zulu capital that should avert the space victory, yes?

Well yeah.

But for that we would need to get to it first. Check the zoomed out screenshot. Do you see Tugela, at outskirts of the jungle? Yes? Good.

Now look at minimap; see those two green dots in perfect horizontal line, west of Tugela? Still with me? Perfect.

The one on the right is Zulu capital. It's landlocked, deep in Zulu territory, and no continuous railroad connection leads from ze Reich to it. I cannot ICBM it cuz Zulus have blanketed SDI over all of their cities, and swarms of Zulu Submarines and Destroyers patrol the coasts.

So yeah we can't stop the Zulu SPEEEHS Victory.

Can't enough spies nuke it to the ground?

Nope cuz Civ2 nukes kill all military units and halve the population, but a 1 pop town will never disappear if nuked.

Oh. Well, you're screwed. It seems so hard to get allies in this game. Well, I think you can restart now.

It's actually oversight in the code of the final patched version; it caused the AI to slowly slip into full anger mode over time without your input. The 'slippage' is so constant that even Eiffel Tower doesn't stop it ;v

No, no, you just need to build a faster spaceship. It should be easy, the AI launches with the minimum possible ship.

Up to you if you wanna continue. Though it could be fun to watch the last few turns of nuclear holocaust.

Is the AI spaceship guaranteed to work?  I thought there was some margin of error.

They can't launch an unviable spaceship, and iirc they don't break down en route unless they lose their capital (which you really only need a nuke and paratrooper to accomplish, which is why SDI and spy defense is super important).

I don't recall if you can outright buy capitals with spy bribery or not.

You cannot buy an enemy capital with spy bribery unfortunately. I don't remember the exact range on paratroopers for civ2 or if anything blocks them from being able to land. But the spy nuke + paratrooper does sound like the best bet to block the zulu space victory. The trick will be getting a spy close enough to the zulu capital to plant the nuke.

Spies can buy units, right?  So the Spy could purchase a Deathbot near the Zulu capital.
