If they  are the original yes, but their apprentices take about a year or more. And I am talking about the apprentices.
That just isn't true. Check legends mode, apprentices learn the secret the moment they become an apprentice. Legends mode actually puts them learning the secret before mentioning the new hf link.

Noticed that after checking, I was mistaken but obviously that isn't the plan for it in the future, just read cado's magical journey. (http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/story/tt_journey.html)  (these things are meant to represent toady and threetoe's plans for the 1.0 game)
It will likely be improved when the actual procedural magic system comes in.

Also, it seems that they cannot take an apprentice themselves until 1 or 2 or more  years after becoming an apprentice themselves (there seems to be some randomization there), if you check. Which means even if that wasn't the case, I would still love to play as an apprentice.

remember the game is only 42% to the 1.0 version and the actual big magic system hasn't come in.

I think it would make for a good RP quest to locate the master you want to learn from, then meet whatever criteria to be accepted as an apprentice. Then either play the instruction (and hazing) day-by-day, or retire while your character learns. You should be able to unretire at any point of the apprenticeship to get an update on what your character has done so far. Then decide whether to take off with what knowledge you've already gained, play through the rest of your education, or retire again.

No, I've got a former apprentice taking on an apprentice the next season in the world I'm looking at. They presumably could take an apprentice on immediately, but don't usually because of how worldgen calculates people moving into towers or something.

That's odd.
Every single necromancer I've looked at in my world is taking an apprentice at least a year after their apprenticeship in my world.ive looked through several towers' histories already so I don't know what you are talking about there.

And my point still stands regardless.

What do you have against playing as an apprentice?

This does make me wonder about the difference between necromancer apprentices and scholar apprentices.

grabbed 7  "secondary" necromancers one by one from legends without skipping any, all of them took at least a year. (The world is medium sized btw, also, I have "orcs" modded in as a larger mortal tougher non-demon worshiping version of goblins.)

I'm going to grab a bunch of scholar apprentices aswell to see if there are any differences.

Looked at how scholar apprentices work, it looks like the "cease being an apprentice" before becoming a master, and even if it doesn't say they cease, their old masters end up listed as "former masters".

It also looks to take 20 years on average before they take an apprentice but the actual apprenticeship they have ends when they acquire their own. So they can be denied an apprentice by their master.

They are much more fleshed out then the necromancer version for sure.

^ This one was odd, but looking below their master is listed as "former master" still, so perhaps he died?

In 97, early spring, (15th of Granite) Iru began an apprenticeship under the elf Alino Sensualyawned.

In 98, late spring, (22nd of Felsite) the elf Calovi Valestyled was denied an apprenticeship under Iru in Packedswelters due to jealousy of the elf Alino Sensualyawned.

Only two years difference. But she didn't let that stand in her way:

No, that was her first and only master, only 12 years after becoming a poet.

So she became a poet 12 years beforehand? That might be why she was able to "graduate" so quickly usually they become an apprentice very quickly after becoming a poet it seems. (A year or less) see above

I don't need trenches! They are useless.
