Previous Thread

Turn: 1782-1783

Technology

The Loyalist board went for the most ambitious design ever recorded. The Imperial Rifle Mk 1 A & B mod. 760mm from barrel to stock, with seven rifling grooves and the first ever breechblock. In addition, the rifle is designed for 16mm paper cartridges and percussion caps with an effective range of 200-300m. This rifle will revolutionise warfare. In theory. In practice, the sheer volume of complex, cutting edge technology meant this rifle would never leave the drawing board in it's current state. After some revision, the ammunition was simplified enough to actually be able to produce this rifle in either modification however they are both wrought with problems and are incredibly expensive.

Monarchist engineers extended their lead with steam technology, developing a funicular network for transporting cargo. High traffic areas are powered by emplaced engines. This logistics upgrade brings the Monarchists up to par with the Loyalist Wagon-ways. They also re-designed the Mulard. With their experience with steam engines they were able to fix the flaws with the original ship, allowing them to equip two small masts, reinforce the hull and improve the complement to 20 guns.

The Confederates developed the Van Karten system based off of the French Gribeauval system. An artillery production system involving standardisation and improved casting allowing better performance. They have also developed the first cannon of this system, an 8-pdr able to fire round shot 750m, carcass shot 700m and canister shot 600m. They have also revised their Whateley Cavalry Pistols to no longer be lethal to anything they aren't pointed at.

The Pirates have also developed a new cannon. The 6lb Huntsman. Incompatible with their Light Naval modification, these cannons can reach 600m. Fort Alton continues the theme, producing their own, long range gun. The 9lb long gun, this heavy beast of war has an effective range of 900m.

Military

The seas of The Robert Isles saw much action this year, with pirate ships an uncommon but ever present sight. Loyalist forces, still with the advantage, are easily able to keep them at bay. Continuing their mission for domination of the waters, the Loyalists hunt down and destroy the Confederate fleet at harbour, the gun boats being no match for true warships. (Open Sea – British: 7/7 Pirates: 0/7 Confederates: 0/7 Monarchy: 0/7)

The Atterton Monarchy had other ideas. They amassed a grand invasion fleet, consisting of six of the new Mulard class ships, plus support boats. Their mission: Take Nelson Harbour and invade the city proper. Sailing through hostile waters is a dangerous game however. Loyalist gunboats harassed the convoy from out of range, withdrawing whenever ships moved to intercept. This harassment took its toll, the battered, frustrated Atterton fleet where almost happy when they finally met the Loyalist main forces.

HMS Beaumont, HMS Collingwood and HMS Nelson were waiting in line of battle. More manoeuvrable and with more range, the loyalist ships kited the haggard Attertons. Unfortunately, the Loyalists were outnumbered two to one and the steamships didn't need to use the wind. Steam engines have their drawbacks however, before the RAS Victory had fired a single cannon, a lucky shot from HMS Collingwood struck the boiler. Steam filled her belly, scalding sailors and sending them running to the deck. Unnoticed, the shot had also breached the fire chamber. Fire quickly took hold and a cloud of death keeping the crew at bay, it spread to the powder room.

Unperturbed by the violent death of their sister, the remaining Atterton ships surged on. When the RAS Conqueror took one too many hits below the water line however, the result became apparent. A stirling effort from both RAS Vengeance (aptly named) and RAS Astute caused crippling damage to HMS Nelson, but one by one, the Atterton ships were incapacitated, routed or sunk. HMS Nelson was scuttled by her crew once the battle was won. Only the RAS Astute and a few support boats were able to limp back to Port Silver.

The British Loyalists followed suit with their own invasion force, targeting a vulnerable peninsula in confederate lands. Not having the problems of hostile waters to worry about, the ground forces were able to land unhindered. Confederate forces meanwhile, moved to hold them in the bottleneck. Neither side had the advantage in artillery, and what few Imperial Rifles were on hand were matched by prolific use of Victoria's and the Combe Mini-Cannons. Confederate Cavalry were also at an advantage, mass-production of the Whateley pistol meant that each horseman could carry several pieces and were able to unleash deadly ride-by shootings in rapid succession. Outmatched on land, the British troops were forced back into the sea, where they were rescued by the waiting warships.

Another assault by the Atterton Monarchy, this time towards Montgomery, was also made. Atterton howitzers outmatched the Confederate cannon in versatility, bombarding infantry formations with anti-personnel rounds. Once the infantry closed to range however, the better equipped Dunwich had the advantage. Again, the Dunwich Cavalry pressed their advantage as well, destroying any formations that weren't paying attention. Only through sheer weight of numbers combined with the ruination caused by explosive howitzer rounds was Atterton able to rout the Dunwich forces. Atterton gains ground. (Monarchy: 2/4 Confederates: 2/4)

Dunwich made their own gains though. Rapidly advancing through the disorganised and demoralised Combe forces, they sallied forth towards Atterton City. This time, the Atterton didn't have the advantage of numbers. Dunwich gains ground. (Confederates: 1/3 Monarchy: 2/3) Dunwich also pushed towards Newton, a similar result occurred. (Confederates: 3/5 Monarchy: 2/5)

Perhaps sensing weakness, Fort Alton also pushes towards Newton. Their new long guns were able to harass Atterton forces long before they could return fire and the infantry were able to resist a moderate amount of punishment due to their shields. The additional forces in the assault made taking extra ground easily. (Fort Alton: 2/3 Atterton: 1/3)

Meanwhile, the lands held together by Lord Combe have fractured further, easily falling to or even outright joining the neighbouring forces. A half-hearted attempt by those still loyal was made to retake the fortress, to no avail. Within a few years, there will be nothing left of the dynasty he created.

International

On November 25th, the last British Troops left New York City and the United States of America was officially an independent nation. Now that several of the great powers are not tangled in a messy war, they are looking for trade partners.

The British, used to a life of foreign goods, are looking for exotic trade goods. Design an advert for your nation's unique, exotic (militarily useless) commodity. The winner will receive 1 production credit for the next 5 years.

The Americans, wanting to solidify their position as a rising power, are looking for a design to improve their naval capabilities. This could be a ship, armament or something else relevant. In return, they offer 1 shipment of ore for the next 3 years.

Rest in pepperonis.

So say the lot that have produced a terrible Martini-Henry attempt that will be a dead-end for the next fifty years, at the least. Between you and the compressed-air fetishists I don't know who's worse. Probably you as at least the Dunwich can be trusted to wipe you off the face of the earth if they kill us. Even if the Dunwich think breaking wind is a suitable source of power for a rifle, they know how to fight on the ground. Think about this, proud Lickers of the Imperial Boot. The main island far outproduces your stronghold. You have never succeeded a landing, so eventually either we or the Dunwich will wrest control of the main island. Our ships can kill yours, and with better cannons that we will inevitably get eventually (hello Long Nines, or dare I say Long Twelves), will kill them on about an even footing. Who will win the naval fight then, given that the ships will be about equal and your foes will far outproduce you? Who will win the following fight on the ground, given you've proven your incompetence there beyond doubt? Your time is limited, Loyalists.

All in good fun of course, and I actually am impressed by the decision to go with the Cherokee-class, so impressed that I advocated building something similar in my first post on the Atterton thread.

You seem to forget something kid...
The sun never sets on the British Empire.
So, whose mainland outproduces the other?

Eh, The revolutionary war is over now, and the French still have the terror to go through.

The fact remains that the British cannot protect you. They've failed to protect a far more important and well-held part of their empire.

Only because the Americans were supported by the full might of the French and Spanish Empires. (Also the Dutch).

France crumbled under the pressure, Spain's empire is also in decay, and the Dutch aren't that important.
