British Loyalist Design ThreadAtterton Monarchy Design ThreadDunwich Meriticratic Confederacy Design ThreadPrevious ThreadTurn: 1782-1783Technology The Loyalist board went for the most ambitious design ever recorded. The Imperial Rifle Mk 1 A & B mod. 760mm from barrel to stock, with seven rifling grooves and the first ever breechblock. In addition, the rifle is designed for 16mm paper cartridges and percussion caps with an effective range of 200-300m. This rifle will revolutionise warfare. In theory. In practice, the sheer volume of complex, cutting edge technology meant this rifle would never leave the drawing board in it's current state. After some revision, the ammunition was simplified enough to actually be able to produce this rifle in either modification however they are both wrought with problems and are incredibly expensive.
Monarchist engineers extended their lead with steam technology, developing a funicular network for transporting cargo. High traffic areas are powered by emplaced engines. This logistics upgrade brings the Monarchists up to par with the Loyalist Wagon-ways. They also re-designed the Mulard. With their experience with steam engines they were able to fix the flaws with the original ship, allowing them to equip two small masts, reinforce the hull and improve the complement to 20 guns.
The Confederates developed the Van Karten system based off of the French Gribeauval system. An artillery production system involving standardisation and improved casting allowing better performance. They have also developed the first cannon of this system, an 8-pdr able to fire round shot 750m, carcass shot 700m and canister shot 600m. They have also revised their Whateley Cavalry Pistols to no longer be lethal to anything they aren't pointed at.
The Pirates have also developed a new cannon. The 6lb Huntsman. Incompatible with their Light Naval modification, these cannons can reach 600m. Fort Alton continues the theme, producing their own, long range gun. The 9lb long gun, this heavy beast of war has an effective range of 900m.
Military
The seas of The Robert Isles saw much action this year, with pirate ships an uncommon but ever present sight. Loyalist forces, still with the advantage, are easily able to keep them at bay. Continuing their mission for domination of the waters, the Loyalists hunt down and destroy the Confederate fleet at harbour, the gun boats being no match for true warships. (Open Sea – British: 7/7 Pirates: 0/7 Confederates: 0/7 Monarchy: 0/7)
The Atterton Monarchy had other ideas. They amassed a grand invasion fleet, consisting of six of the new Mulard class ships, plus support boats. Their mission: Take Nelson Harbour and invade the city proper. Sailing through hostile waters is a dangerous game however. Loyalist gunboats harassed the convoy from out of range, withdrawing whenever ships moved to intercept. This harassment took its toll, the battered, frustrated Atterton fleet where almost happy when they finally met the Loyalist main forces.
HMS Beaumont, HMS Collingwood and HMS Nelson were waiting in line of battle. More manoeuvrable and with more range, the loyalist ships kited the haggard Attertons. Unfortunately, the Loyalists were outnumbered two to one and the steamships didn't need to use the wind. Steam engines have their drawbacks however, before the RAS Victory had fired a single cannon, a lucky shot from HMS Collingwood struck the boiler. Steam filled her belly, scalding sailors and sending them running to the deck. Unnoticed, the shot had also breached the fire chamber. Fire quickly took hold and a cloud of death keeping the crew at bay, it spread to the powder room.
Unperturbed by the violent death of their sister, the remaining Atterton ships surged on. When the RAS Conqueror took one too many hits below the water line however, the result became apparent. A stirling effort from both RAS Vengeance (aptly named) and RAS Astute caused crippling damage to HMS Nelson, but one by one, the Atterton ships were incapacitated, routed or sunk. HMS Nelson was scuttled by her crew once the battle was won. Only the RAS Astute and a few support boats were able to limp back to Port Silver.
The British Loyalists followed suit with their own invasion force, targeting a vulnerable peninsula in confederate lands. Not having the problems of hostile waters to worry about, the ground forces were able to land unhindered. Confederate forces meanwhile, moved to hold them in the bottleneck. Neither side had the advantage in artillery, and what few Imperial Rifles were on hand were matched by prolific use of Victoria's and the Combe Mini-Cannons. Confederate Cavalry were also at an advantage, mass-production of the Whateley pistol meant that each horseman could carry several pieces and were able to unleash deadly ride-by shootings in rapid succession. Outmatched on land, the British troops were forced back into the sea, where they were rescued by the waiting warships.
Another assault by the Atterton Monarchy, this time towards Montgomery, was also made. Atterton howitzers outmatched the Confederate cannon in versatility, bombarding infantry formations with anti-personnel rounds. Once the infantry closed to range however, the better equipped Dunwich had the advantage. Again, the Dunwich Cavalry pressed their advantage as well, destroying any formations that weren't paying attention. Only through sheer weight of numbers combined with the ruination caused by explosive howitzer rounds was Atterton able to rout the Dunwich forces. Atterton gains ground. (Monarchy: 2/4 Confederates: 2/4)
Dunwich made their own gains though. Rapidly advancing through the disorganised and demoralised Combe forces, they sallied forth towards Atterton City. This time, the Atterton didn't have the advantage of numbers. Dunwich gains ground. (Confederates: 1/3 Monarchy: 2/3) Dunwich also pushed towards Newton, a similar result occurred. (Confederates: 3/5 Monarchy: 2/5)
Perhaps sensing weakness, Fort Alton also pushes towards Newton. Their new long guns were able to harass Atterton forces long before they could return fire and the infantry were able to resist a moderate amount of punishment due to their shields. The additional forces in the assault made taking extra ground easily. (Fort Alton: 2/3 Atterton: 1/3)
Meanwhile, the lands held together by Lord Combe have fractured further, easily falling to or even outright joining the neighbouring forces. A half-hearted attempt by those still loyal was made to retake the fortress, to no avail. Within a few years, there will be nothing left of the dynasty he created.
International
On November 25th, the last British Troops left New York City and the United States of America was officially an independent nation. Now that several of the great powers are not tangled in a messy war, they are looking for trade partners.
The British, used to a life of foreign goods, are looking for exotic trade goods. Design an advert for your nation's unique, exotic (militarily useless) commodity. The winner will receive 1 production credit for the next 5 years.
The Americans, wanting to solidify their position as a rising power, are looking for a design to improve their naval capabilities. This could be a ship, armament or something else relevant. In return, they offer 1 shipment of ore for the next 3 years.

Brown Bess Musket - A smoothbore flintlock weapon that fires a .69 inch (18 mm) shot. It has accuracy variable to a range between 50-100 meters. These are designed to be able to be equipped with bayonets. (1 ore)
Imperial Rifle Mk. I Mod A - This rifle consists of a 760mm, 16mm-calibre rifled barrel in which seven grooves are cut. It uses a soft-lead ball which will expand on being fired, grip the grooves and clean them of blackpowder residue. Several difficulties appear in the manufacturing processes required in order to get the shot in order to get it to reliably grip the rifling grooves cause the process to produce the shot quite expensive and the required changes to infrastructure to produce it en-mass is complex. The rear of the stock features a section that, when a side-mounted knob on the breachblock is rotated the rearmost section of the barrel pops out, allowing the loading from its paper cartridge. Damage to this breachblock comes moderately often, resulting in it either being unable to open, or the breachblock breaks out of proper alignment preventing the rifle from being loaded. The rifle attempted to be primed with caps containing a shock-sensitive explosives, but the only suitable shock-explosives the engineers were able to successfully use consistently without high volatility was highly expensive to get ahold of. The effective range of the rifle is 300 meters in the hands of a sniper and 200 meters in the hands of a regular soldier. (1 ore, Complex x 3)
Imperial Rifle M1. 1 Mod B - Replacing the percussion-caps with the tried and true flintlock system was simple enough. The attempted fix of the rest was something else entirely. Some combination of the rifling and the new batch casting causes regular blockages in the barrel, requiring specialist attention to fix, assuming the mechanism didn't get destroyed. Whilst the breechblock is now durable enough to be of use, it can sometimes damage the paper cartridge which makes the weapon even more likely to misfire. Overall this weapon requires extensive caution to use and must be cleaned after each shot to prevent the weapon from becoming more dangerous to the user than the enemy.(1 ore, complex x2)
Saber - The sword used by boarding crews and Officers of the British Loyalists. (1 ore)
Artillery
Imperial 6 Pound Artillery - A lighter variant of the six pound cannon with an effective range of 700 meters. Vast modifications to the casting and production processes of the cannon are made in order to achieve this. This cannon is able to replace the old six pound cannons on vessels that used it. (2 ore, Imperial System)
AM-R 12 pounder Howit: This 12 pound Howitzer weighs 2350 pounds in total with an effective range of 700 meters for ball ammunition. It has a gun frame that may be pulled by horses or in a limited manner by infantry. Its tube is reinforced breech smoothbore cast iron with length of 5 feet and diameter of 0.385 feet. It is capable of firing either 12 lb. cannon balls or small ball canister shot. Canister shot has an effective range of 300 meters. (3 ore)
Navy
Gun boats - Fishing boats retrofitted in order to support a single 6 lb. Cannon. (3 ore, 0 wood)
London-class Brig-Sloop - A ship with a 95 foot by 27 foot gundeck that is fitted with eighteen six pound cannons. These cannons are arranged in a manner of having eight on the port and starboard, with two cannons able to be shifted between gunports at the fore and aft of the ship. The cannons furthest back on each side have a minor ability to fire backwards, but only by a minor amount. The four foremost cannons of the ship, not including the ones facing directly forewards, have a similar angle towards the front. The ship has a speed and maneuverability slightly lower than that of the future Cherokee-class Brig-Sloop of the British Empire. (4 ore, 1 wood)
Jaegar - An eight gun cutter, a small, single-masted vessel, that is more manoeuvrable and faster than larger vessels. It is armed with three cannons a side, with another two forward facing. There is however, very little space for crew or loot. (3 ore, 1 wood)
Dover-class Brig - A ship with a 95 foot by 27 foot gundeck that is fitted with two six pound cannons. Those are able to be shifted between its original positions at the sides and gunports at aft of the ship. Most of its ammunition and powder storages have been replaced with holds for cargo and supplies for longer voyages. (3 ore, 1 wood)
Transportation Infrastructure
Horse and Carriage - The most basic form of transportation. Able to transport a single material resource for weapons production each year.
Wagonway Trains - A transportation system composed of a number of horses pulling a long train of carts along 2' gauge wagonways. There are numberous issues when trying to use the system down large slopes or taking a curve at speed. Able to transport a second material resource each year.

'Samara' rifled musket - A variation of the Brown Bess designed with 4 rifling grooves cut down the barrel, used with lead bullets that expand into the grooves upon detonation of the gunpowder. The barrel is shortened to facilitate easier loading, resulting in a lower muzzle velocity. However, due to the rifling grooves, the effective range is still improved, but not as much as it could have been. The grooves do cause some problems for reloading on occasion, but very rarely does it prove to be impossible to fix. The Samara's most effective range is 100-150 meters. (1 ore, Complex)

AM-R-II 12 pounder Howit - A variant of the AM-R that weights slightly over a ton. Its bore has been modified to be able to effectively use case and low explosive shot. However, this comes at a cost that neither ball or canister ammunition can be used with the gun. The effective range of the cannon is 600 meters for the case shot and 450 meters for the explosive shot. (3 ore)

Am-Mulard:B - A steamship 115 feet by 23 feet large, this ship has an improved engine that provides force to the twin paddle wheels. The new engine neither suffers from the failure inducing shortcuts of its predecessor, nor the weight concerns. The hull has also been improved, bringing it up to par with the other warships of the Isles with regards to damage resistance and sea worthiness. Combining this with the addition of two small sails (at the fore and mizzen), this ship is no longer restricted to calm, still water. The ship carries 20 6lb guns, 10 aside, with two stern chaser ports cut to allow guns to be moved there. (4 ore, 1 wood, 0 coal)
Transportation Infrastructure
Horse and Carriage - The most basic form of transportation. Able to transport a single material resource for weapons production each year.
Semi-Powered Funiculars - Designing tracks and cart wheels that fit together was simple enough, however refining the steam engines to be able to haul those loads was another challenge completely. If the engine was to be of any sensible size, it can only haul one loaded cart, or a small train of unloaded ones. Thus powered sections are limited to short lengths, leaving the majority of the system unpowered. This system will allow you to access one additional resource.

Brown Bess Musket – A smoothbore flintlock weapon that fires a .69 inch (18 mm) shot. It has accuracy variable to a range between 50-100 meters. These are designed to be able to be equipped with bayonets. (1 ore)
Victoria Air Rifle – The air rifle is about 4 feet long, and 10 pounds, similar to a normal musket. It fires a .46 caliber ball, and has a tubular, 20-ball gravity-fed magazine that runs under the barrel of the rifle. The gravity magazine jams fairly often due to more than one shot entering the barrel and will render the rifle inoperable until it gets an hour maintenance. The rifleman using the weapon can reload the gun by pointing the rifle into the air, and waiting for a ball to roll down. When the magazine is emptied, the rifleman can merely unscrew the tube, refill it with balls, and screw it back on. Instead of using gunpowder as a propellant, it uses compressed air, stored in a small reservoir in the rifle butt that can crack and render the rifle useless, if the pressure within it is too great, the weapon is treated without delicacy, and after an average of 47 shots. (1 ore, Complex)
Victoria II Air Rifle – The Victoria II Air Rifle is a variant of the Victoria Air Rifle. The gravity fed magazine is replaced with a wheel with paddles perpendicular to the firing chamber, where the gravity fed magazine deposited the rounds. An access is granted on the right side to allow the wielder to rotate a shot from the below barrel fifteen round magazine into the firing position. There is a ratchet is installed in order to prevent the wheel from going to far, which needs to be pressed down when switching to the next round, so that the wheel may move. This innovation prevents the jamming seen in the original Victoria. However, this does come with its own problems of having some of the air escape through it, reducing the effective firing range, and the pressure can sometimes cause the ratchet to become loose or the wheel to get stuck on it. This type of jam is able to be cleared in under a second and the looseness of the ratchet can be fixed with some simple maintenance after every battle. Finally, the air reservoir is replaced by a version to be screwed on an off, but have to be pressurized before use. The effective range of the Victoria II is 50-100 meters. (1 ore, Complex)
Whateley Cavalry Pistol MkII - A large, heavy pistol that has a compressed air method of firing. It has a 9 1/5 inch barrel and an 18 round magazine of .46 Caliber Shot. Through modifications to the loading wheel and a coil spring to load rounds into the weapon at greater speed, the weapon is able to fire fully automatic. Using the compressed air for chambering makes the pistols cheaper to produce, however you now get less shots per tank. The housing has also been reworked to prevent shots from going in any direction other than out of the barrel. Once the trigger is pulled the pistol will still keep firing until it runs out of air or ammo however. (1 ore, Complex)
Coombe mini-Cannon – A large bore revolving musket intended to be serviced by a team. The Gun rests on a stand and has a six round, removable magazine with a crank handle on the back. The user turns the crank handle clockwise to chamber the next round, manually primes the flint and pulls the trigger, then winds the crank again. To change the magazine the crank is simply wound counter-clockwise. The crank system can be temperamental however and misfires due to the round being misaligned are not uncommon. Ideally, a gun could fire a whopping 20 rounds per minute, but having to check for alignment halves this. (2 ore)

The more of the sea a nation controls, the less likely their trade ships are to be threatened by pirates. The more capable the trade ship, the more likely it will survive piracy. By default all nations will use gunboats, unless they have a better option. It is possible for one nation to liberate the trade goods another nation would have access to.
