I read it, but it wasn't clear on exactly what we should be doing at this point. Was there an action prompt or something that I missed?

Oh uhm, the idea was basically that you as courtiers want to get more important positions...so what do you do? You go to the various branches of the Government and try to get positions there...should have been clearer on that...

anyway in case you are overly confused with the entire situation and/or don't know where to go:

1. The Imperial Army

Obvious Place for any Noble to start. Military Victories make such things far easier. But where do you get a job?

1. The Tagmata
That's The Regular Army. Relatively easy to apply for and you get to fight a lot.

2. The Themata
The Local Garrisons. Historically they took over for the limitanei and at some points got turned back into limitanei. It's your cushy job with which you get a good income, perfect place to send the unwanted family members too. downside is that those won't get you influence at court nor favor with the Emperor.

3. The Black Tagma - Athanatoi
Historically a bunch of over privileged youths trying to reform the Immortals of the Persian Empire, the Black Tagma here represents a Secret Police/Imperial Intelligence Service. Usually hard to get into but very profitable and prestigious.
Currently easier to get into since the Emperor wants info on everything.

4. Frumentarii
Historically disbanded long ago, the Frumentarii survived here. They represent a faction much despised by the common man but fulfill a similiar role to that of the Athanatoi, although more in a scout and intelligence service way than in a nightly raids on dissenters way.

2. Imperial Navy

1.The Themata
Imperial Navy is organized in Themata, there is no Militia Navy.

3. Imperial Bureaucracy

1. Jobs in the Palace
Closest to Court, but hard to get. There are indeed prestigious Jobs and Titles and Function in the Palace to be had, they usually do not involve too much of work and allow you to get deep into Court Intrigue.

2. Scrinium barbaorum
The Imperial Diplomatic, Postal and Intelligence Service all rolled into one. Working there is dangerous but potentially very rewarding.

4. The Church

Jobs in the Church don't outfit you with much worldly power but you can be sure to get much cash and have easier access to the Emperor and other high officials, another nice intrigue office.

Besides that, there are propably dozens of other important posting in the Imperial Hierarchy to be had, if you can think of it as a useful or useless job it propably exists.

So I was in the navy but was fired during the coup? Is that my backstory?

Name: Flavius Valerius Sidonius (gr: Flavios Valerios Sidonious) or Sidonius for short
Dynasty Name: Valeria
Traits: 32, 14, 23
Backstory of your Dynasty: Valerian Family counts itself among one of the oldest aristocracies of the imperium, stretching back to the eternal city itself. Their service in diplomacy, military and court is mentioned in one breath with the previous emperors. That does not mean that the family holds any particular liking for the previous basileus, oh no. Sidonius himself is a man of his time and of his family - Raised in the capital and given the most extensive education, he always was fond of traveling, visiting Syria, Italia and Hispania to see the former imperial provinces and to see what was lost. The name of his family and his travels imbued him with a deep sense of justice and honour, which he found realized in the ranks of Tagmata.
His family and education put an unusual emphasis on ancient philosophies, and some would worry over his preference of Aristotle over Gospel, but he did not let anyone take advantage of the fact and he did appear in the church when he could. Overall, clergymen who meet him see a keen mind, but little of the vital Theoria and instead the rather dangerous Scholasticism, so often exuded by the Roman church.

Other Char: Flavius Valerius Zeno
Trait: 5

Spiderking:
Uhm yes...if thats not okay we can change it. I just went with the basic fact that the players don't come from big major families but from small dynasties and have to work their way up through the imperial hierarchy. Add to that, that i wasn't sure if all your characters want to be navy people or just the one, i thought that i give you better connections within the navy and as such a way to move up quicker in navy ranks.

Ardas you are in:

Sidonius Valeria:  (Roll again for that 32, so he gets his third trait), Drunkard (your character is fond of drinks...too fond. While not an outright alcoholic he has the sad tendency to overdue it on every occasion presented which makes him unreliable in diplomatic functions and prone to be knocked out and hung over in the worst moment), Natural Commander I (A genius of a commander, he has a natural understanding of military matters...that does however only include land forces...he has no bloody idea about oceans)

Zeno Valeria: Slow (Being uneducated is a flaw that can be fixed, being an idiot is not. This character will be impeded all his life by his lower cognitive functions, no matter how hard he tries...at least he is not completely backwards)

I have a 2.

BTW Ghaz, It's Valerius in the name and Valeria on its own. You are meant to conjugate in Latin.

Apologies for all inconsistencies and terrible grammar, i neither speak greek nor latin and am throwing this together as i go.

But thanks for the info will write it correctly from now on.

As for your Character: Ugly (Be it that he has been terribly scarred or that he was dropped as a little kid or simple genetics, this character is certainly not looking particularly good. A Diplomatic Career is completely out of the question...unless you want to insult the other nation. Finding a woman can also prove rather difficult)

Hmm, an ugly drunkard whose only saving grace is his commanding skills - this ought to be fun!

You currently are not inside the Navy and hold no position whatsoever. Whether that is due to the Coup, You being kicked out for other reasons or leaving the navy out of your own volition i'll leave open to you.

So, our empire is in the dumps. Any ideas for lifting it up from this abysmal state?

Micelus? Spiderking?

Edit on the matter of Influence and Favour with the Emperor.

Influence at court allows you to cut through redtape corruption and general douchebaggery at court to get shit done. It basically is something you can use to get people to do stuff in the name of the empire even if they don't like it.

Influence however cannot be used while you are not at court, same goes for Favour with the Emperor. Favor with the Emperor is just that, the higher it is the more likely he is willing to intervene on behalf of you (even if you are in the wrong), look mercifully upon your favors and similiar things.
