A strange mood has me baffled
« on: November 27, 2015, 09:23:14 pm »

I have a possessed carpenter who was in the middle of getting materials for his artifact when he just...stopped collecting them. He's now hanging out at the workshop as if he doesn't have all the right materials. The problem is that I have all the materials that he needs, yet he refuses to go pick them up. I even used DFHack's "showmood" command to confirm my suspicions:

  • He wants "any bones, quantity 1," and hasn't claimed any yet. This is where he is stuck.
  • There are no less than three bone stacks waiting for him in a stockpile less than ten squares away.
  • There are no other bone stacks anywhere on the map.

I don't understand why this is happening.

1. Are the bones forbidden?
2. Are the bones outside his burrow?

1. None of the bone stacks are forbidden.
2. The carpenter has not been burrowed.

One possible cause: before the carpenter mooded, I had been using the workflow plugin to maintain a steady supply of bone bolts. Once the carpenter got stuck, I realized that the workflow constraint might be preventing him from picking up the bones. But he still won't pick them up, even though I have removed that constraint from workflow, disabled the workflow plugin entirely, and dismantled the craftsdwarf's workshop just to be sure. Could workflow still somehow have a claim on those bone stacks?

If you're positive the bones are where he's stuck, maybe slaughter something expendable to generate a fresh stack of bones?

I already did that three times. That's why I have three stacks of bones.

Huh.

Is the workshop in a different burrow from the bones?

Are you completely sure the next item wanted are bones? Have you double and triple checked that it isn't something else on the list (such as e.g. two kinds of cloth, one of which has been collected, and one that's unavailable, or 3 bolts of silk of which two have been collected)?

I use workflow continuously and never had it interfere with moods.
But I also have no better idea than checking with showmood again.

As Uggh just said, I use workflow constantly and have never seen this behavior. Have you tried saving and exiting the game entirely? A quick reboot might get him moving.

Huh.

Is the workshop in a different burrow from the bones?

I only have one burrow, and that's just a generic "get inside!" shelter burrow that I use in case of emergencies. No dwarf or workshop is actually assigned to the burrow. I tried turning the relevant alert on and then off again, to no avail.

For everyone else, here's the entire output of showmood:

Code: [Select]
Zon Kolthabost is currently possessed with intent to claim a Carpenter's Workshop and become a legendary Carpenter (but not really).
He has claimed a Carpenter's Workshop and wants the following items:
Item 1: any logs, quantity 2 (got 2)
Item 2: any plant fiber cloth, quantity 1 (got 12000)
Item 3: any cut gems, quantity 1 (got 1)
Item 4: any bones, quantity 1 (got 0)
Item 5: any rough gems, quantity 1 (got 0)
Item 6: any cut gems, quantity 1 (got 0)

Have you got cut or rough gems to hand as well?

Elves do it in trees. Humans do it in wooden structures. Dwarves? Dwarves do it underground. With magma.

I certainly do. I have dozens of rough gems and about 10 cut gems. I may have some of the rough gems cut, just to see if that does anything.

Edit: Okay, now I have multiple different kinds of rough and cut gems. But the bones are still holding Zon up. (It was inevitable.)

The plant fiber cloth entry looks odd. It seems to say he's claimed 12000 cloth items!
I assume you've checked inside the workshop that the claimed items are marked as "TSK" and that they match what showmood states?

I don't have any useful idea of how to resolve the problem, though.

You may be on to something. I just checked inside the workshop, and it seems that Zon has claimed two pieces of cloth when he only needs one. Maybe this is what's holding him up! I'll forbid one of the pieces of cloth and see what happens.

Edit: I forbade one piece and nothing happened. I forbade the other piece and nothing happened. I un-forbade the first piece, and still nothing happened, except that showmood now lists Zon as having no cloth. Grrrrrr....

Check the strange mood job in the job screen. Has he claimed a cut gem? Does he have said gem in his workshop?
