Quote from: Steam Carriage Controls
A Large metal bar with a green-rubber handle. Located directly in the center.
Four green-rubber valves sticking out of large pipes, located on either side.
A flat box on the upper right console, with two sideways grey handles. Both are turned to the four-o-clock position
On the upper left console, a black box with ten diamond shaped red buttons. They were labeled once, but the labels seem to have worn off.
There are thee large pedals at your feet, one green, one red, one blue.
A large black lever directly to your left, with horizontal oranges stripes on the handle

Victoria tries stepping on each pedal for about two seconds each in turn, to figure out if they do anything.

Victoria semi-randomly stamps on the pedals.

The Green Pedal sends out a cheerful carriage whistle, from where, you can't say-SHWEEEEOOOOH! Judging by the bandits ragged laughter, this amuses them. Of course, it could be useful for summoning help.

The Blue Pedal seems to have no obvious effect...but, you notice if you are holding it down with your foot, the carriage speed seems steady, no longer going any slower. It's likely the blue pedal is a sort of dead mans switch, designed to stop the carriage if the driver is uh, knocked unconscious...

The Red Pedal causes a terrible grinding noise to emanate from under your seat, and the entire carriage begins to shake in a unfortunate manner. You take your foot off quickly once you hear a metallic tearing noise and the smell of smoke. Unluckily, you seem to have caused some damage to the carriage-the reverberation under you is now constant, rattling your teeth, as if something important was torn off. The shaking is steadily getting worse. You had one Job, Victoria.

(Carriage Damage=10%)

---

~Four Bandits now close in, preparing to leap to the carriage...

[?]

But they veer off, perhaps judging the jump too risky. More will catch up soon, however.

[?]

A shot caroms dangerously close to Victoria, fired from one of the riders. Ironically, it was probably more luck than good aim. Still, it's pretty dangerous up here, you know? The previous driver could have told you.

Thoughts: what are the light sources within the carriage? Anything oily and flammable?

Small electric bulbs in mock flambeaux lanterns dot the walls of the carriage, though they are currently turned off.

Victora ducks low, hopefully to minimize chances of being hit, and tries turning the handles to 5 o'clock.

Victoria does so. Clouds of steam jet out from the undersides of the carriage in a cloud, ironically driving the closest bandits back with surprised curses, not that are truly harmed...but, she notices the carriage also seems to be losing power as this happens.

Vic immediately turns them back, to 3 o'clock, in the hopes of speeding this damn thing up.

So say we all.

While the carriage ceases losing power as soon as she turns the handles (the steam clouds abruptly cease with a metallic whine), it doesn't seem to actually increase your speed-you're surely going even slower now than you were before.

The bandits are closing in again.

Victoria looks at the green-handled lever and inspects it to see how it operates before doing anything with it.

Victoria is sure this is the...reins? Whatever they call it. In theory, you push it forward, and the carriage begins to move faster. Pull it back, and it goes slower. Like a horse! Sort of.

All she has to compare is horses.

Vic pushes it forward, but only a little bit, to test that theory. Say two inches.

Chug, chug, chug, chug...

Victoria finds that even pushing it forward a small amount causes the carriage to begin speed slowly, but steadily.

Her pursuers see this, and spur their horses faster...

~Four Bandits now close once more, preparing to leap to the carriage...

[?]

This time, three bandits make the leap-one bounces off the side of metal carriage (this is heard quite well inside) and hits the dust...but, two bandits a man and a woman, manage to cling to the side! They clamber up the carriage and draw long, pointy implements that assuredly glitter wicked-like in the sun. They take a moment, trying to get their balance and find their feet.

The woman yells to Victoria over the sound of the wind.

"You there-stop this cart-o-mobile right now! We're here for the Young Man!" She says arrogantly, her accent flowing and precise-pure Imperial.

[?]

Another shot whines over Victoria's head. Don't they know they could hit their friends?

"I don't much care what you came for. What you're getting is left on the side of the road."

Vic pushes the lever all the way forward in an attempt to unbalance the two bandits, then draws her sword and prepares to fight if they're still on the cart.

"It sounds like our second-degree friends are arriving," Immanuel observes as the sound of somebody bouncing off the side rings out through the carriage.

Hiraya drew a blank on the question of what she heard.

FakeEdit: And decided to keep silent because she -really- wanted to say something but cut off right at the last second. The fellow sitting on the presumed convict was a...very intriguing man.

"I believe we've said everything of note to each other already. I will sit here and guard the prisoner. You should help with deterring our assailants up top," he says to the woman, giving a slow nod as he gauges her reaction. His hands snake into his coat fluidly and with an air of practice, preparing for violence to ensue.

Action: Immanuel Jade makes sure his pistol is ready for a quick draw.

Thoughts: is the Saltbox single-shot or a revolver?

Sal looks at Immanuel, holding his revolver, and nods. "Alright, I'll see whats going on up there." He grabs his hat off the rack, putting it on, before trying to climb up through the hatch.

Action: Put on my hat and climb up through the hatch, see what's going on.

It always is-Immanuel has concealed in such a way it is difficult to detect, even if someone pats down his coat-but he can access with a flick of his wrist, not unlike how a card up his sleeve. And, the Saltbox is truly what some in the far west call a 'one trick pony'-it's got just the one shot, and it's pretty annoying to reload. In regards to sneak attacks-the best kind of attacks-it sure beats hitting someone over the head with a vase, or a haunch of frozen meat. Immanuel has tried both.

Sure, a more reliable weapon might be in order as some point-then again, he's got defenses of his own, doesn't he?

"I don't much care what you came for. What you're getting is left on the side of the road."

Vic pushes the lever all the way forward in an attempt to unbalance the two bandits, then draws her sword and prepares to fight if they're still on the cart.

The carriage doesn't exactly jump forward like a smaller vehicle would-it just begins to creep on and on, gaining speed. Both bandits easily manage to keep their feet, but as the carriage goes faster and faster it's going to be hard to stay on for anyone...they begin to stagger toward you, no doubt intent on making your insides your outsides.

As you draw your sword, you realize you have a problem. If you take your foot off the dead-mans switch, the carriage is going to begin slowing down...and then, all the fatter bandits and the older horses will be able to catch up, then you'll be a real mess. Humm. There should be a way to lock it down, right?

Sal looks at Immanuel, holding his revolver, and nods. "Alright, I'll see whats going on up there." He grabs his hat off the rack, putting it on, before trying to climb up through the hatch.

Action: Put on my hat and climb up through the hatch, see what's going on.

Sal lifts his head up, noticing two bandits advancing from one end of the carriage, and the bounty-hunter woman trying to desperately work the controls. The bandit woman catches sight of him, and she quickly angles a narrow, iron toed boot at his head.

"You stay out of this boy, it isn't any of your business!"

[?]

Sal gets kicked upside the head, giving him a nasty bruise. Ow.

Vic has no time to wrestle with the controls and just stands so her left heel is pressing down on the blue switch as she faces the bandit coming toward her. She won't attempt any fancy finishing blows; just parry and attack when an opening presents itself.
