Just duplicate the first creature in the raw and generate a few worlds. Eventually, you should get a world ruled by Giant Mantises with tamable humans.

Nah, I'll just mod humans tameable and give giant mantises an entity. What could go wrong?

Be sure to give giant mantises a longer lifespan. Right now they only live a year.

I just designated the last of the Hell Bastion. Soon it will be finished and Bastiongate will go down in the annals of dwarven history!

Been a while since I have been playing Dwarf Fortress but decided to work on my Mountainhome for a few hours yesterday - decided to make a gym (a room full of pumps) and to have them mass dump all the goblin and troll bodies (and junk) from all the battles and sieges.

Anyway a Minotaur showed up and I totally failed to use tactics.  Just sent some units against it and they got messed up.  One SpearDwarf died and two MaceDwarfs were wounded.  I blame myself - should have sent in the archers first.  :(

Then I was REALLY stupid - noticed I had no Hammerer and assigned a Dwarf to the position.  He picked up a hammer and beat the heck out of three chained up Dwarfs.  Once again, my fault, I should have remembered I either DON'T assign anybody as a Hammerer, or assign one of the walled up vampires as a Hammerer, or always pick the calmest Dwarf to be it (my last game I had a cool fisher Dwarf as the Hammerer - he sent much of his time fishing).   :-[

So two of the victims were so badly beaten up that they may not be able to do anything - I have already gone through their labors and decided to make the one that can still walk and has both hands into a Battlefield Medic and the other one as a first member of what I will call Housekeeping.  I feel really bad about it because it was totally my fault, not a bug or anything, and I also kind of like my populace.   :'(

Still waiting for the children born in the Fort to become adults but it is taking such a long time.  Once they grow up I will mostly likely stop playing the 2012 game and start with the newest version.  I have played some Adventure Mode with it already but have yet to seriously start a Fortress.  I really want to try a Island Embarkation.  Sea food!

That is why we mod.

Quick question about migrants. I thought the first 2 waves were hardcoded and you wouldnt get any after that if the civ is dead. Is this no longer true? My world has no dwarven civs left standing and I revived mine. But I have gotten 4 waves so far. Also after a queen was made, dwarves not in my fortress were made general, diplomat, etc. Would that mean there are dwarves still alive somewhere? There are no hillocks or anything held by either dwarven civ.

A few goblin ambushes all went off at the same time - but I was able to lift the drawbridges and none of my populace were attacked but a few dogs were killed.  Then the Dwarf caravan showed up.  Well, they killed most of the goblins, but for three who ended up in my cage-traps.  Afterwards I opened the Mountainhome and collected all the free stuff and stripped the dead bodies of the goblins and the traders/guards.  One of my soldiers ran into a goblin who had failed to flee and was wounded but kill the foe.

On the other hand - Good News!  My pair of cougars gave birth to a baby cougar!
Can't train them but maybe once I get enough I can place them within the Fortress, on chains, as inner security.

Another option instead of chaining war animals is putting them in 1x1 pastures. They'll stay in the pasture until they see a hostile (such as a kobold) and then chase it down. The only problem with this is dwarves may chase after the animal to try and bring it back to pasture...even if the war animal is charging into a mob of goblins.

while we are on the topic of defense I have a question

im working on another fort because why not. and I want to set up defenses early because we have evil clouds. im worried they may thrall. (I don't dare test it now) and so I want to set up some archer places. there are to rooms with fortifications flanking the entrance.

do I need to make to squads? if so, would making them share a barracks cause them to train together?

or is there a way to send indivuals of a squad?

Welp, that's two forgotten beasts now locked away behind the Hell Bastion. Why are there forgotten beasts in hell anyway?

Also, I captured another forgotten beast, making my total seven. This one has secretions but I don't know what they do.

EDIT: Actually, make that one again. The new FB had poison dust, so it blew itself into a chasm as soon as it saw one of my hell workers.

I think you can do both.  I know different units can share the same barracks and archery range.  Also I believe, under 's', there is a command about placing individuals instead of a squad.

I think I would prefer to chain them inside the tunnels and such, so they can have a change - out in the open the goblins could kill them too easily with arrows (I think).

Winter has come....

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

If you look close you can see the cute little fuzzy cougar kitty!  Isn't he soooo cute!

Er...I mean, he will feast on the flesh of our foes!
