Just now a dwarven child, possessed by unknown forces, crafted an artifact goblin bone earring. It menaces with spikes of goblin bone and adorns with rings of merfolk bone. It's called Future of Tars. He used XXmerfolk right footXX for the sake of crafting...
Merfolk have feet?

I always thought they were just dwarves who were really good at swimming. Seadwarfies. Shoo be booze, shoo shoo be booze.

It's muddy, cold, wet, and smelly here. There's at least a dozen zombie-ponies roaming around, freaks. I think I saw one look toward me a moment ago. It looked freaky. Why the hell did we leave the nice, comfy, and most importantly, SAFE, Stable, for this shithole? Whatever. Anyways, Talon and Escort decided to grab some power drills and dig out a ratty little hole in the ground. At least it's safe. Meanwhile, Smile and Lake are out near the zombie-herd chopping up some wrecks and digging through a few piles of trash. Not much else is happening, although I think there's a psycho-camp in the distance. Ugh, I hate the Overmare.

I second this. If you see the word pony, you don't have to express your dislike. But this isn't 4chan, and this isn't the place to discuss this sort of thing. I think it'd be best if we just got off the topic before more people get pissed off.

I'm thinking of trying another haunted embark. I really want to find one where the ocean is haunted, or part of it. And part of it freezes in the winter. This is going to be tough to find.
And the release might come before I'm ready.

I hadn't reduced the baby cap, so the downstairs fort pushed us past the limit for requiring a mayor (32 children born since the start of the fort). There are still only six dwarfs upstairs - Rith, her three children and the two oldest below-ground children. The boy of that par, Led has finally grown up. Practically upon reaching maturity, he declared his undying love for Solon, Rith's youngest daughter, and 19 days later, they married. About ten of those days were spent getting them into the same room, and five more were spent sleeping. It seems that they had accumulated enough socialising points for marriage during the ten years they spent on the surface, with only those six dwarfs to interact with each other.

I expect Tholtig and Mebzuth to marry in a similarly speedy fashion when Mebzuth comes of age next spring - they rate each other highest on their friends list, and of course the six aboveground dwarfs are all friends with each other. Even Tholtig and Led have shaken off their reservations about each other and became friends after spending years as "long-term acquaintance". We have 31 tame animals on the site, all above ground. 27 of them are wolves, all descended from the single couple that was caught about six years ago.

Rith has gained legendary rank as wood cutter and thresher, as well, making her legendary in five skills (weaver, clothier and grower were gained earlier, in this order). Rith's husband is still alive and they've both had a lot of free time in the last fifteen years, but she's never become pregnant again since they were physically separated. It really does seem that _married_ units need a path or even physical proximity to reproduce.

So I started a new fort but with the Masterwork mod. What happened on the fourth (and technically the third) year was epic. I was compelled to write a short story about it.

  In Arrowpool, the brave marksdwarves numbering some 20 dwarves spend the entirety of two years attempting to kill goblins scheduled for execution.
  Unfortunately, said goblins were equipped with rusty iron armor, whereas the marksdwarves only had bone broadhead and piercing javelins. The goblins, initially numbering 8, was eventually whittled down to three. The final three goblins were the toughest nuts that the world of Everlasting Domains has ever seen. For every 100 javelins, only one hits them, without doing significant damage. The rest are blocked, dodged, or bounce harmlessly off their armor
  Finally in the summer of year 304, one of goblins slips up and is hit on the hand, dropping his shield. The marksdwarves fell like hungry wolves on upon a fresh kill, raining bone javelins mercilessly on their victim. It took more than 30 javelins to finally seal his fate. It was fitting that one of his goblin buddies perished with him, failing to block several successive javelins.
  The final goblin cried out in terrible agony as his comrades were torturously murdered, one by one, till their bodies became rotting skeletons in the execution chamber. He swore a great oath to steal all dwarven babies to prevent them from becoming the terrible monsters their parents were. The overseer of Arrowpool silently smiles and decrees that this goblin should die the most glorious death.
  The execution chamber was sealed off and work commences outside the chamber door. War drakes were initially suggested to be part of the final combat, but the overseer overruled the dwarves; such lowly creatures have no part in the slaying of a heroic goblin warrior. The final execution will be done by all 30 of the militia, ten of which are hammerdwarves, the rest being marksdwarves.
  The arena was prepared, and the militia readied for combat unlike any they had seen before. Orders were sent to pull the door lever of the execution chamber. Immediately, the goblin detects his glimmer of hope. Dodging and blocking all javelins, he quickly throws several successive punches to the first hammerdwarf to meet his vengeful fury. Several skulls were fractured, and four hammerdwarves lie on the floor, unconscious. Two elite markdwarves were struck down despite being geared in scaleplate. Moving like a divine wind, more than ten marksdwarves soon lay unconscious on the ground as the goblin delivered fitting justice to the murderers. Spotting his chance of escape through the access stairs, he ran up the stairs, but fell off said stairs dodging another attack. Luck had it that he landed outside the walls of the fortress, and he felt freedom for the first time in two years.
  The sergeant of the elite marksdwarf squad stood upon the walls of the fortress. The cunning overseer knew that there was the chance that the goblin hero might overcome the militia. The sergeant drew his bead carefully as the goblin scrambled for his freedom. A mithril broadhead javelin flew unerringly to the mark, severing the right foot. Stumbling, the goblin desperately attempted to crawl away from the sergeant. Before he could even move two tiles, another javelin struck him, horrifically bisecting his body.
  The overseer nods approvingly and turn away to carry out his recordkeeping duties. Such a legend has to be sung for the days to come.

You know Armok smiles upon you when you manage to have two floor collapsings on the top floor of the tower drive halfway through the building before finally lodging into random floor walls, and nobody is seriously injured.

What can I do with a huge pool of magma that's 12 z-levels under my fort? I already built furnaces there. I never was really into fort mode so I'm stumped. I can barely craft steel equipment.

How do I melt equipment that is in Bins?

d-b-m  Highlight all the bins.  Everything inside will designate to melt.  If you made metal bins, melt those too. They're horrible.

Well, it's best known as the FTW lever... Flood is a polite euphemism.  Check out Boatmurdered.

I'd recommend you split your stockpiles early.  Setup one for meltables, another for masterwork steel goods for the militia.  Melt everything in one, issue the rest.  Now, you'd have to dump out the bins and reset the goods.

Don't try to outfit your dwarves with ONLY masterwork steel armor though. It takes a long time even with legendary+5 armorsmiths because of the amount of steel required.
If you forge a full set of steel armor, you'll need 15 bars and 9 jobs, and if you melt it, you'll get 14.1 bars (11 jobs). Apart from automating steel bolt forging (1 forge job), stack splitting, collection and melting (25 jobs), you'll always be using more steel than you get. The number of melting jobs can become a non-issue very soon, since melting is so much faster than forging. The real problem is the autmated part of it.

I tried doing a masterwork hall trap with legendary ecstatic weaponsmiths, and the limiting factor was the mechanics skill.
