Started up a swordsdwarf and speardwarf squad. Also, when I started up the game, a couple of my military went and died shortly after I started it up, deathcause says suffocation, so, I dunno.

I'm thinking of training at least one other marksdwarf squad up to eliete, but I'd like to get the new recruits in the first one up to par.

Anybody know of a good way to train up marksdwarf quickly? I do have a live training range though, so maybe I should just make lots of cage traps and capture lots of goblins.

New embark...I'm finding that what I'm looking for in embark sites these days is interesting topography and political situations.  "Standardchannels" is looking pretty interesting:

* I'm AT WAR with the Elves!  First time I've seen that.  Have to get the defenses set up quickly.

* Lots of magnetite and many many layers of shale (hopefully with coal or lignite, none visible on the surface).  Visible gems, tetrahedrite, and natural platinum.  Clay and sand.

* A brook with a natural 6 z-level waterfall; even better, the brook exits the map in a natural deep channel from the base of the waterfall that is perfect for a trade entrance; short, totally isolated from the rest of the map (barring flyers), and everyone gets a nice waterfall mist bath on the way in!

Game is still on pause from embark while I consider how to set up defense design for the first wave of point-eared attackers.

*grumble* Gonna make my annoying mayor have an 'unfortunate accident'.....

Tried to have him go fight the goblins hanging around the cages, but the freaking coward decided to flee the instant he got injured by a bowgob.

It turns out you can't make beds out of glass. And wells need buckets. Which also cannot be made of glass. Number of zombies now in the hundreds. Making a trapped entrance to crush zed with drawbridges and cage them.

If you're lucky, you can get a glass bucket in a mood, I have two in my current fort.

Anyways, since the mayor is also a craftsdwarf, I'm going to force him make his own rings to fill the mandate.

There must be at least 20 eligible dwarves for a mood to occur. I have one.

Two ambushes caught me while I was clearing the surface of all trees and shrubs. The first was distracted by a cat, so I just sent most of my soldiers to deal with it. They arrived, and delivered the expected beatings. Then the second ambush arrived, so I sent my marksdwarves to the walls and called my five swords from the caverns. The ambush was slaughtered, but somehow had found one of my dwarves that was gathering shrubs.  :'( Down to... well that's odd. DF says I have 154, therapist says I have 158. Ten children, everyone else is in a squad, with professionals training at all times. The dead person had mostly iron(idiots won't pick up the plentiful steel or candy), but never hit an enemy. No skills.

I've been poking my military in the butt with sticks for a year now, and they're all pretty much superdwarves. Well...almost all. There's one who just refuses to improve. I started thinking maybe she hasn't shown up for training at all, so I finally decided to go see why.

Well, I found out.

She's dead.

She's dead, but she's still assigned to the squad, and I can hit s > p, select her name, and try to order her around, or zoom to her. It zooms to an empty corridor. She also still shows up in Therapist.

She's in a coffin that, given its location, looks to have been one of the first few to be filled.

I've had a dead axedwarf in my crack squad for, apparently, a really long time.

I'm not entirely sure what to do about this.

Lielac likes adamantine, magnetite, marble, the color olive green, battle axes, cats for their aloofness, dragons for their terrible majesty, women for their beauty, and the Oxford comma for its disambiguating properties. When possible, she prefers to consume pear cider and nectarines. She absolutely detests kobolds.

I had this problem with an older version of Therapist.  Dead dwarves were gone once I updated.

You had the problem where they still appear in the military in Dwarf Fortress in an older version of Therapist?

And that's what I get for skimming before answering.  My bad.  Quite a mystery you've got there.  Even though she already has a coffin, maybe an engraved slab would help this dead dwarf to actually register as dead with the game.

Goblin training was still ongoing.

A goblin was badly wounded before the inevitable fall, and quickly turned unconscious from the pain. I sent some marksdwarves to clear it, but the goblin managed to cage itself before he died. This was the day that I realized if a goblin dies in a cage, all their stuff get scattered out of the cage.

I also learned that dragonfire sadly does not destroy engravings. I had plans to exploit that.

I looked into it, and I was back by .3 versions. Downloaded the new version, and now they both agree... I have 158 dwarves.  :P
Problem is some makeowned merchants. They don't register as pop members in the -z- screen, but they show up as citizens in -u-.
The new version of therapist lists curses! also health!  ;D
