After our first migration wave the fort was well on it's way to having a strong military, this of course changed rather quickly. Three soldiers from the initial embark/migrant wave, two more recently recruited, and two Hunters who would have made great Marksdwarves if they hadn't both gotten their heads ripped off by Drakes... Falling into a rage the soldiers charged the overgrown lizards looking for revenge upon their fallen comrades, aiming specifically for the two that had received proper names from Armok for their violence. Having completely forgotten to put any armor on of course made the fight take a turn that wasn't exactly what they wanted. After one Drake fell, a poor recruit took a gash to the left thigh, likely to never have use of the leg again, while two of the more veteran fighters received similar wounds before it was all over. On losing a foot at the shin, the other his lower right arm after he shoved it into a Drakes throat to get better positioning for his killing blow. The doctors did way they could, but the military will have to be reorganized. Thankfully the three wounded dwarves don't seem to mind being instructors rather than front line fighters. Especially the poor Dwarf who lost the foot, as the same day he limped back to the main gate/training area a kobold thief decided he looked unbalanced and sent his other leg flying into the air with the quick slash of a sharp blade...

On a brighter note, the Elves continue to try and underpay for our goods, with negotiations usually ending unhappily. The Miner's seem to be dreaming up something special for them.

Early Spring, 1406

First of all, a short review of the most notable events since my fortress was founded.
In 1401, the group of seven dwarfes dwarfes settled down beneath a river, and besides a high mountain with an nice source of earth-blood. Some trees were cut down, a provisionally sleeping romm was dug, which should become a farm later. After that, some other basics for survival were built. A moat was dug around my settlement, beds and tables were built.

As the year went on, I finished my farm, and dug deeper into the mountain, and upward until i reached the top of the volcano. Stone industry was working well. Even though the first migrant wave only brought 11 dwarfes, i started a meat industry too. Sadly, my two water buffalos starved to death, so I dumped them in the moat - because i didn't want to have those things lying around for half an eternety in my fortress. After that, Winter occured without anything noteable to happen.

In spring 1402, the first elven caravan brought two really nice thing - which are the main reason for not raiding every single caravan that visits my fortress. A male Giant Tiger, and a normal male Tiger. These two saved my fortress a few months later, as both water buffalo skeletons were reanimated - until then, I didn't even realize that I settled near a necromancers tower, so I didn't have any military set up. The tigers killed the reanimated bodies, revealed the necromancers and hunted him, until he stepped onto one of my spear traps - where his impaled body is still rotting.

Both of the Tigers survived with just some minor injuries, and are nowadays guarding the main entrance of my fortress. Since then, they killed several snatchers, a bunch of thieves and three necromancers. Both have scars all over their bodies. I still hope for female counterparts, so I can start breeding them.

(to be continued)

Tigers are awesome!  Grats especially on getting a giant one.  They're one of the best war animals out there.  Crazy enough, they can even take on jabberers successfully!  Jabberers are the best war trainable non-mega beast vs. goblins in iron armor, so that's no small feat.  Btw, what's the name of your fort?

That's what DF needs, The gutbuster brigade.  Screw that elf and his cat. Thibbledorf Pwent is the real hero.

SteelHelm's gem window overlooking the volcano's caldera is complete. The new dinning room/meeting hall has been put next to it to allow our citizens to enjoy the view. We also have an artifact silver coffin, hardly a good omen for the future

That's going to look beautiful when it's done!  Let us know when you hold the opening games!

But it's more fun if you imagine it happening exactly in that order:  The goblin sees the dwarf charging at him and is struck with a terror so deep, he loses hold of all his possessions.  The dwarf takes a swing in mid-charge, decapitating the goblin, then finally colliding with the headless body.

Designing a farm, and, more importantly, a controllable water system so I can flood other rooms and add power to my fort (1z-lvl down is where power station will be). I need a nice compact design for a power station, though. TO GOOGLE!

Remember that water can flow diagonally.

EDIT: Oops didn't have my glasses on. Yes, that will work. There are probably pretty decent designs on the DF wiki actually. Or at least one you can readily adjust to suit your ends. Depending on your space concerns you might consider broadening the channel. Also that doesn't look like stone you are digging into, in which case irrigating the farms in unnecessary. Irrigation is presently just used for stone floors unless there is some specific variety of clay I am unaware of or something.

I know it doesn't need to be irrigated (after I did a double-take while designating it  :P), but It could be useful to branch off of the channel to irrigate future farms below; also, I had to get my miners in there somehow to build the actual channel. I could also get rid of the farm in the future and use that room for something else. It's just a preparation thing. I'd rather have an easy option to expand than not.  ;D

It is good to prepare a water source, yes. Especially when your initial digging is only a placeholder for your actual construction (I do this all the time as my dwarves need homes while I carefully plan and designate the majority of the underground sections of the 'real fort' all at once). If you want to remove the temporary structure later you can always do a controlled cave in.

As a bonus, diagonal flow removes pressure if I recall correctly, so you can actually make a pool of water as a reservoir several z-layers deep without having to worry about instaflooding everything.
