I learned something today.  About digging in very deep soil with aquifers.  I hate aquifersa little more now.  in stone they arent an issue, but dirt hates me.  If I hadnt found gold veins above the obsidian . . .

The biggest takeaway is paying attention to what level game considers my cork to be at.  Some hills have different zero zlevels.

My river well drowned my fort so I had kind of an "Eh, screw it" type moment and had one of my masons seal off the fort just to see what happens.
edit: I think they might be falling into the well. Meanwhile, catten ozdock is making masterpiece after masterpiece despite the situation. I think I'll see what the crafts are pictures of.

Well, i managed to do it again. My population jumped om from 18 to 46, not too bad. That said, i've got an Apostle of Armok that is arriving, his name? Mosus Teskomtrist. That said. In that migrant wave, not a single fucking one was a smith.

I got an armor mood.  I went ahead and planepacked it, and it ended up being a damn right boot.

Stage one of my hydroengineering project is complete.  When the brook thawed this spring I turned on my pumps and filled up my massive cistern.  It took almost two full seasons.  Drainage systems, worker access, and output junctions are already rigged and functional.

After 16 years, 39million dorfbucks fortress worth and a population reaching 345 dwarves (yes I went a bit nuts raising the pop cap) , the first forgotten beast of this forts existance has arrived : A great skinless lizard, it has large mandibles and it has a gaunt appearance. Beware its fire!

After the RNG mocked me one too many times by withholding a smith migrant, I started embarking with one all the time.

Wow, what's your FPS at?!

Relicshield, pop. 115, Late Autumn of 281

The Steel of Winds celebrated their 30th year since the founding of Relicshield.  After a series of goblin sieges, sometimes twice a year, the Evils of Spray pulled back from the eastern frontier.  There hasn't been a goblin siege in the past two years, though surely it's only a matter of time before they lick their wounds and return.  All the rage and hatred for the Steel of Winds has a surprising source.  The current leader of the Evils of Spray is Zefon Yellslabor... a dwarf!  Her reign began in 239 after deposing Sheka Mutedthief the Unremarkable Morsel, a demon who had ruled for over 200 years.  All told, the traitorous dwarf's subjects have suffered 327 casualties, while Relicshield has lost only 6.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The safety precautions put in place due to goblin aggression inadvertently started a war with the elves.  An elven diplomat had been forgotten while all entrances to the fortress had been closed.  Apparently he thought he was being held prisoner and began attacking civilians, leading to swift military intervention.  This was only a year after another elven diplomat had been ambushed on the outskirts of Relicshield.  The elves of the Worthy Prairies cut off all trade, then attacked just as merchants from the Mountainhome arrived.  Naturally, elven wood was no match for dwarven steel.

Edem II, once the youngest member of the army, quickly rose to the status of legendary hammerdwarf.  However, his propensity for only bruising his opponents has come into question.  It's been noted that he is easily moved to pity.  Perhaps he never would have joined the military had it not been for the abduction of his younger brother.

It seems that the elves are not the only ones filling the recent void left by the goblin withdrawal.  The kobolds of Chomin (no translation known) led a surprising assault deep into the trade tunnels, but they had the misfortune of coming across Commander Sphalerite and his squad of Legendaries.

The civilians of Relicshield have also been quite busy.  Dye, clothing, food, and most importantly booze, have all had their production streamlined (thank you workflow).  The cavern, after being completely secured, has led to a textile revolution from the abundance of cave spider webs. Silk, once rarely used in garments, has now become the most common fabric in new tunics, though pig tail and rope reed fiber have remained popular for trousers and shoes.  The majority of the alpaca herd has also been moved underground.  The hardy beasts have proved quite adaptable and have taken quite well to cave moss.  While other grazing animals have been tried over the decades, alpacas have become the clear favorite of the Steel of Winds due to their ease of care and versatility.  In fact, Relicshield has been slowly phasing out the use of all leather products other than alpaca. It should certainly simplify stock counts and equipment allocation to the marksdwarf squads.

Had A cool fort, of seven, then I got murdered by the Shadddoow beasts of the third cavern ((masterwork mod)), they basically killed my entire fort, even if they were in iron armor and iron weapons.

Ok, I've just made a new fort after roughly a year of ragequitting and the new world seems great; no necro towers, only one goblin fort and very few aquifiers. I found a nice 2X3 location: half savage grassland, half neutral mountain, both with clay and multiple metal. Well, everything was great until this: http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-11779-mountainnotched.

Year 5 still underway at Swordgleams.

After cleaning up the spring goblin siege corpse pile the fortress staff moved on to working on improvements.  Soil area rooms are being floored and used for animal training.  Smoothing and engraving work continues.  The miners work here and there, including a long-term exploration of some discovered adamantine.  Might be time to starting collecting the blue stuff and add to the armory with it.

The fortress got another mayor.  Third one in three years.  And one demand for bracelets to be made.  The count at least asks for bolts to be made - they're useful.

An area was mined out for some experimentation with mine carts, and then that was moved to a different spot since the miners found a massive kaolinite cluster.  So the fortress can start exporting porcelain if need be.

Animal training has been going well with the fortress gaining familiarity with techniques for training lions, rhinoceros, and rattlesnakes.  The lion pride has seven members including three cubs, there are five rattlesnakes (most still on chains), and the rhino herd has grown to fourteen with four adults and ten calves following the recent capture and training of another adult.  The spare male might be war-trained and then posted as a guard somewhere.

The military was expanded further.  The twenty melee dwarves are fully equipped in steel armor.   The marksdwarves are now four units of six armored with bronze gear and mainly using bone crossbows (you get an expert bowyer immigrant, you put him to use).  The former "rookie" squad was shifted to metal bolts and a new squad formed up for crossbow training with wooden bolts and the "rookie" status.  Most of the squads have been put in a coin-star to get them familiar with moving about in armor.

An auxiliary gate was left open while logs were collected and closing it was neglected when another minotaur appeared.  By the time this was noticed the minotaur was already inside the gate with easy access to a tunnel into the core fortress with only a single guard dog in his way.  However, he was much more interested in pounding on a stone door.  This gave time for the axe squad, spear squad, and the fortress guard crossbow squad to form up and then charge through the doors.  The initial volley of crossbow bolts drove the minotaur back to the surface with a few minor limb wounds.  Then two spear dwarves got to him and inflicted more serious damage.  The spear dwarves and an axe dwarf finished him off after that in quick order.  (The two dead minotaurs are been memorialized on slabs - the tradition for this fortress is for forgotten beasts and such to get slabs to be placed in the main dining hall as a sort of trophy for fortress kills.  The third minotaur is still sitting in a cage in the courtyard.)

The dwarf caravan recently arrived with a load of iron goodies.  The liaison also indicates that the fortress will get duchy status shortly.

What's its fate?  Permanent captivity or live training drills for your troops?

My majesty militia is content for some reason, even though they're always enraged about long patrol duty or depressed about long patrol duty. Upon further inspection I see this in the training barracks:

The best thing to do with minotaurs is hope you get two of opposite gender and let them breed in a sealed-off room somewhere. Then you've got infinite training practice in the distant future.

@VerdantSF nice update.  You might want to check how that dwarf became a member of the goblin civ.  I'm guessing either by abduction from or occupation of a mountainhall.

In Holyspire the Hearth of Heaven, the production of rock nut oil is in full swing, for no apparent purpose.  The introduction of fertilizer to agricultural practices has resulted in an explosion of food and drink.  The larders are stocked with bags bursting with flour and quarry bush leaves.  I've even seen stacks of NINE wipe vines.  Ditto for the dye shops.  The fortress of 200 dwarves has a comfortable 8000 drink supply.  The food reserves are uncountable, and every caravan that arrives is quickly and handsomely relieved of its cargo of cheese.  Even the cloth supplies are beyond reckoning.  I'm considering taking this opportunity to cease all farming and processing activities for a year or two in order to reorganize and relocate the whole operation.

On the animal front, a trained dingo went wild and killed two of the fortresses tame eagles.  It was put down, but several eagles are starting to lose their training as well.  Trainers have been relieved of other duties and reassigned to them.  The fortresses eagle's are genetically modified to be war-trainable and are somewhat larger than a dog.  The fortress also has captured enough dralthas to have a stable breeding herd.  I have not yet decided the best way to implement it though.  One option is to let them graze in the caverns.  I've cleared a lot of open space down there, digging out all the pillars in some areas except for the large ones.  It would be a simple matter to use a pump to muddy the area and have the dralthas graze down there.  The other option would be to chain up the females and allow them to give birth while wild.

A few Giant Cave Spiders and Jabberers have been spotted, but I've been unable to trap them successfully.  I believe the numerous underground trees that frequently block pathing are discouraging these noble beasts from attacking my wooden doors or chained kittens.
