I think he means that damage and blocking aside, iron does well enough, so the added effort to make steel would be impractical for him early on.

Iron ore and flux boulders.
I'm certain I'll be hitting iron ores on my map, and the flux I can order from my caravans. Besides, iron is really good by itself, so why make steel? I mean, sure, it's stronger and more valuable, but since when has valuable armor ever saved your life?

I'm just saying.

Steel armor has a MUCH higher chance of stopping critical hits.

Steel weapons critical MUCH more often.
There is that bit, but I'm a really lazy DFer, and for the most part I don't want to do more work than necessary. Iron is good enough for me, but perhaps I could make some steel armor and give it to my Knights...

I think he means that damage and blocking aside, iron does well enough, so the added effort to make steel would be impractical for him early on.
Other than the rest of the above, this ^^^ is my main point.

Ten dwarves were swept into the ocean by the summer thaw, but it was not in vain.  I have enough of my prototype done to test my theory before building my megaproject full-scale.

And what, might I ask, is this theory/megaproject?

Something I'll share after the next winter of my fortress.  I found a mistake I made that I cant correct until the ocean freezes again.

edit:  Well this is interesting.  I just broke aquifers clean over my leg for even more power.  MASSIVELY expandable, easy power.  Oh. My. YESSSS.  (and yes, I'll share how in a bit)

So RabbitHut is picking up the pieces after a double-ambush and axedwarves sent limbs flying everywhere.
It goes well, only one Thresher has a close call when stuff flies up the garbage chute.

Hmm, there's over 30 undead in the chute, and the large buffalo corpses actually break my trash crusher.
Need to figure out what to do with a room of 30 undead ...

Furnacebright has been founded. The area is made up of savage coniferous forests bordering savage mountains. Which are made up mostly of mudstone. But there are a few large marble deposits and a healthy amount of silty clay. The parent civ only had steel anvils so I brought lots of cassiterite and and malachite to be refined ready for when the caravan comes in the autumn. As well as one pick to get things started. I also have a dedicated Cook/butcher/tanner with a brewer/herbalist and a dedicated grower. So food should be a non-issue. So my starting seven begin the task of plundering the land of its resources and quarrying the stone to make a walled compound.

First priority. Start building a small keep in the foothills of the mountain to use as a base till the fort proper has been carved out.

Secondary priority. Making some trade goods to export later in the year.

Out of curiosity, has anyone ever used a pair of aquifer breaches to create a never-ending river of power?

Fairtrades has been founded. I decided to bring along 12 malachite, 10 bituminous coal and a bar of coke to make copper weapons in case we didn't find any metal early on. (of course this may be more than offset by my previous decision to add a reaction to make spears from wood at the crafting workshop)

The "Strike the earth!" screen told me about lions, so I'm concerned as to whether that's an issue or not.

Surveying the land, the map is quite hilly. I have found the perfect spot to start digging the entrance tunnel and the farms, the main meeting room, and the initial stockpile. While looking around, I have actually managed to find deposits of gabbro and a few veins of tetrahedrite... Apparently I was wrong about not having any metals; silver and copper, once I get the metal industry jump-started.

I now have a list of priorities:
1) Dig the fortress entrance into the dirt, and get supplies inside.
2) Dig out farms and start planting plump helmets.
3) Start chopping down trees for beds and potentially charcoal fuel.
4) Excavate gabbro, carve it into blocks and construct a small keep outside the entrance
5) Start producing goods for the caravan

Also, the map is made mostly out of fire clay, so a ceramics industry might be an option, as well.

I've placed one waterwheel doing something like that to power a millstone before, but never thought of the potential for making it larger scale.  Impressive sir.

Oh, I'm not done with it.  That's the prototype.  Did you notice it wraps back around itself like that?  The word you want to describe the full-size version is "S-bends"...

There's really not much reason for crossbowmen to wear armor a copper bolt will cut through adamantine high boots like butter.
